UPDATE: William Mize was arrested November 28, 2023, in Jacksonville, Florida. He was trying to sell a boat on Craigslist and someone sent in a tip that he was using a pseudonym. Judge sent him back to Spokane, WA, where he is awaiting sentencing.

20:49 Bill: a manipulative, wealthy man that committed cold and calculated insurance fraud by taking advantage of his family and getting them to be accomplices to his schemes. Not to mention his serious crimes stretch so far back that they go past the statute of limitations. The Court: Nah, this man isn't a flight risk. We don't need to monitor him. I'm not a lawyer but have experience working in Law in the US. Can't tell you how many times either jokingly, or seriously, someone suggested staging some kind of accident for insurance money. However, they would quickly throw out the idea as soon as I told them, you definitely could; BUT, the injuries would have to be real. Good old Uncle Billy obviously knew that, and was sick enough to actually still carry it out, and on his family no less! Everybody seems to think you can fake the injuries. I believe It all stems back to the McDonald's "Hot Coffee" lawsuit, and people STILL don't have any clue about the actual facts! Anyway, just made me think of it. Bill obviously was very smart and knew the injuries had to be real. Also, very sensible to stick to what worked and not go too big. I think any other person might have tried for a big settlement, from a Corporation. But remember, in the Hot Coffee lawsuit it wasn't enough that the coffee was hot enough to sear the poor womans labia closed; it was also proven that the McDonalds knowingly and willingly made it that hot to extract a little bit more coffee from the beans.

Uhhhh no if he was poor he would have gotten bail but he just wouldn’t have been able to afford it. Not the same as being held without the option of bail. Also, I’m absolutely not saying that the wealthy don’t get better outcomes in court lots of times due to their ability to hire better attorneys (and pay for expensive tests, expert witnesses, investigators etc) bc that is most definitely true. However, your last sentence seems like it’s implying that you will always get to go home on bail if you are wealthy and can pay big money. That’s definitely not true. There are tons of instances of wealthy people who are arrested for serious offenses that carry a potential life sentence are held without bail. Regardless of a person’s wealth the judge will definitely hold you without bail if the person was caught red handed committing murder/high level drug trafficking/racketeering or any other serious felony. If you know that there is a 99.99% chance of you being convicted and the minimum sentence is like 25 years I think most people, if given bail, would go on the run bc there is no reason to stick around. Either way you are going to be in prison essentially the rest of your life. Sometimes it’s actually HARDER for a rich guy to get a judge to agree to bail because of the much higher chance of a successful escape. Same goes for dual citizens or foreign nationals bc it’s very easy for them, compared to an avg American, to flee the country.

The real reason that person didn't get very much time, is because America, and to an extent Americans themselves, simply don't care to punish those who bring in the most money. I think the reason Bill didn't go legitimate was a combination of things, but the main reason was his mindset. He looked at things differently than a normal, sane human being. Where you and I would see a human being in need, Bill saw an opportunity, a chance to make a play and get a payout. Not only that, but he probably enjoyed the "game". Determining the best way to set the stage, the best way to hurt someone to produce the injuries he wanted, and so on. What'd be extremely disturbing to even consider for you and me would've been enjoyable for Bill, in the same way you or I would get satisfaction from building a cool model in just the right way or something like that.
