We, the actual Tolkien fans, stand in relentless solidarity against the desecration of Professor Tolkien's lore, vision and messages for the purposes of shallow virtue-signalling and tokenism. We invite true fans everywhere to stand with us, read the books, and share Tolkien's true spirit and messages. Evil cannot create, it can only corrupt.

This is exactly how it felt when we got the sequels for Star Wars, and suddenly we realized that the prequels weren't all that bad. We always think 'it couldn't possibly get worse' and then... it _does._ 😭
@pablito4762

I liked the Star Wars prequels despite being worse than Star Wars original trilogy. I never understood the hatred for them. I liked Ewan Mc Gregor as young Obi Wan, Nathalie Portman as Padme, Jake Lloyd as child Anakin Skywalker and Hayden Christensen as late teenage/young adult Anakin Skywalker, Samuel Jackson as Master Windu, Christopher Lee as Count Doku, Ian Mc Diarmid as Palpatine, Liam Neeson as Qui Gon Jinn. I loved the pod race and many other things. Of course some dialogues could have been better and maybe Anakin Skywalkers fall to dark side was a bit rushed. But overall it was okay. But as you said Star Wars sequels were bad and an abomination. The same opinion as i have for Star Wars Prequels i have towards "The Hobbit" trilogy. It wasnt as great as Peter Jacksons "Lord of the Ring" adaptation but overall it was okay. Especially Martin Freeman as young Bilbo Baggins who captured a lot features of old Bilbo Baggins played by Ian Holm eg. being annoyed by random guests who want to visit him. The biggest critics for hobbit was to much CGI. The Orcs from Hobbit looked ridculous compared with Urukai from Lord of the Ring. But this show is just modern woke agenda from Hollywood. I ve seen 2 episodes and dont like it though the introduction with the 2 trees was not so bad. But i cant stand all this bullsh*t eg. intersectional feminism: women are strong and men just useless betamales, diversity on wrong places, .....

Two things: 1. Someone on the staff really loved The Dark Crystal as a kid, and the whole rock-breaking contest is an homage to the Skeksis Trial by Stone that they felt like they just had to shoe-horn in here. 2. The thing in the chest is Marsellus Wallace's soul, obviously. "Tolkien Untangled" has some videos talking about how he would make a Second Age show... but he actually walks through history instead of jumbling it all together. In his vision, by season 3, we come to understand the origins of the Ring of Barahir and the rise of two "factions" of Numenor and his whole concept of having the show explore the contrast between the immortality of elves (the line of Elrond) vs. the death and decay of men (line of Elros) is really cool.

My problem with it is my same problem with most modern television. We don't have TV shows anymore. We have TV tells. The characters tell you what they're thinking with no subtext, no settled, no communication through gestures or what is left unsaid. The characters tell you what actions they are doing as they perform them as if you cannot see what is happening on the screen. The characters tell you what they will do what they have done and they don't show you anything. Acting and writing are about what you hold back. This script was written in crayon.
That $5 million shot of the dwarf city, looks like a loading screen to a $20 game.
Durin being pissy about Elrond not coming to visit for his wedding and kids CAN be kind of justified, by the show's logic. After all, Elrond and Celebrimbor apparently walk from Eregion to Khazad-Dum in an afternoon. No traveling clothes, no food, just wearing long, flowing robes the entire way. So clearly it's right next door. The same as walking down the block to visit your friend. Right? I'm still baffled that they've essentially written Celeborn out of the story. How can you get rid of him and still have ANY of the events play out the way they did? No Celeborn means Galadriel isn't married to him, which means they don't rule Lothlorien, they don't have Celebrian, which means she doesn't marry Elrond, meaning Elrohir, Elladan, and Arwen aren't born, and Arwen doesn't fall in love with Aragorn.

I think it just proves the age old lesson… You can have all the money in the world, but if you don’t have passion or care in the quality of work you’re doing, especially with someone else’s work, people see right through that. It doesn’t matter how much money you have. Bad writing never wins.
I believe that the key to success of Jackson's trilogy was the production methodology. They created a demo movie before even getting the money. So it had to be good enough at the very beginning to involve the investors. Jackson's crew even payed to some random New Zealand actors to record all the lines. So all of the scenes were already there - drawings with dialogues. And as when you make music, every next iteration of the demo material is getting more and more polished and as a result you have a solid composition consisting of well crafted layers. It's antirandom in it's appearance. That's why it's a masterpiece as well as the original books (still not that deep though). But the Rings of Power creators didn't even tell the actors which characters they were going to play before they came to New Zealand! They just through the money in and make a request - "I want it to be a hit!" This is an example of the most awful and soulless ways to set up things in art. This is why this show is such a piece of snake's shit. Let's not watch it, people, please. Ignore it. Let it eat itself

Same with "Queen Doritos"
Orcs coming out of the ground, humans calling elves "knife-ears", elevators in dwarven cities... This is looking more like a Dragon Age story than Tolkien. Even that orc looks more like a darkspawn than an orc. You can clearly see that the writers have no respect for the lore or for the fantasy genre whatsoever. For them all fantasy is interchangeable. It doesn't matter if you telling a story in Middle Earth, the Sword Coast or Eberon. They put it all in the same pot. They are incapable of understanding that Tolkien's world is very different and has a certain tone to it that makes it unique despite having thousands of copies. And each copy brings something different and a lot of them become unique in their own way. If you can't understand those subtle differences, you have no place in writing fantasy. And if you can't translate the tone of the original work into your work, you have no place in adapting any work of art to another medium or creating anything derivated from it. There are a lot of problems in Jackson's adaptation, but at least it felt familiar. I felt that was the same world I read on the books, even though there are times that I was like: "this isn't how I read it". (For example the burden of the ring being represented as the ring being actually heavy on Frodo's neck and bruising it. To me, when Tolkien said that the ring was a burden he meant it psychologically.)

@@joe77andino I liked them both when I watched long before the Jackson LOTR films because that's all there was at the time. I felt the animated Return of the King was a little strange in its animation though. I'd likely pick the animated The Hobbit over Jackson's The Hobbit because of how much PJ added nonsense to the movies. But PJs LOTR trilogy was well done even despite changes I might have grumbled about. I can appreciate the classic nature of those old animated films at a time when you couldn't get anyone to touch Lord of the Rings as a live action film. Sidenote: I have been told there is a fan edit of PJs The Hobbit that takes out the nonsense, so one of these days, I'm going to have to find that edit and see if it changes my mind. 🧐😁

@@joe77andino Nice list... I'm first and foremost a student of Tolkien, but I once was a 'Star Wars' fan, even read the books. But I started to give up years ago. It's just been hard to keep loving that universe. 'Star Trek', was my jam for years until all these new series came out and just didn't feel like Trek anymore. I watched up to 'Enterprise', started to watch the newer shows and just lost interest. I couldn't tell you what really didn't sit with me, but it seemed to have lost something for me. Trek has always been progressive with their stories and had a diverse cast since the 1960s, so that's not an issue for me and the story was good. I can't identify the specific thing that isn't catching me. I really wanted to like 'Picard', but I got bored halfway through season 1. And I love Patrick Stewart. I'll watch him in anything.
One of the best parts might have been when Darth Sauron tried to convince Lucia Galadrias that she should be a stay-at-home mom, but she replied "I shall be property of no man. My glory shall come from superhuman powers and always being right." It was so brave. Not 100% sure if they included it in the release (due to the boycott), but I've learned from the Amazonians that we can just make up any junk, steal ideas while calling it inspiration, and tell a story as long as it suits a relativistic, post-modern agenda of opposing what we consider traditional values.
The part when Guyladriel was hanging on the Cross and cried out, “Forgive them Eru, they know not what they do!” I lost it.

I'm wondering why I don't see anyone mentioning how bizarre Disa is, in terms of characterization. It was possible that she hadn't even seen Elrond before, given that Elrond didn't come to the wedding or any of their children's birthdays. The only way she's heard of him would then be through his husband, Durin. He would obviously be increasingly negative on him and she just... Didn't listen? Didn't believe him? When Elrond comes, she instantly hugs him and tells Durin to make up with him. If I were in a similar situation, I would at least ask Elrond to explain himself. Then again, she didn't keep their the children from playing with Durin's treasures, so maybe she just doesn't care. Really weird.

Rings of Power has been entertaining for me so far. The roast of it, I mean.
A note: Most of the Istari were sent to Middle Earth during the Third Age, but it's said in "The Peoples of Middle Earth" that the Blue Wizards were sent in SA 1600, the same year that the One Ring was forged by Sauron. So Meteor Man being a Blue Wizard (Alatar or Pallando) is possible as far as timelines go. This is contradicted in Unfinished Tales which says all the Istari were sent in the Third Age if I remember correctly, but it's up in the air. EDIT: Because RoP is smashing together and wrecking the timeline already, they may just decide it's ok to ignore almost all other timeline inconsistencies as well.. so yeah. Could be anyone.

To me it was the most accurate portrayal of a woman in the show thus far… and I’m not saying they should just be housewives, she was an integral part of the mining process and that’s how they met each other. But she doesn’t have to carry a pickax or be breaking rocks to do her part in their society. She uses her gifts to help her tribe because she’s an actual strong woman Who loves her family and is not selfish. Galadriel on the other hand is basically a discount version man who is smaller and weaker and still tries to physically fight when she was one of the most powerful magical beings in all the realms…. that’s not a strong woman that’s a weak ass man with small 💪.

This is so strange. The way you describe Elrond's meeting with Celebrimbor, with o mention of Feanor or the Silmarils (by name at least, from what I'm hearing), and only a passing reference to Morgoth - as if the events of the Legendarium didn't basically happen on account of the actions and conflict between Feanor and Morgoth - seems to indicate to me that Amazon really did have us hard core fans in mind for this show as we are already very familiar with the Silmarillion and we know how Celebrimbor and Elrond came to be here. And that's very odd. Because if anyone at Amazon has been paying attention to Tolkien's fandom since, like, the 1980's at least, they'd know not to expect that level of success with us. Decades of subjection to crappy adaptations (at best) before PJ's LotR (which I could pick apart, but don't) has made us an insufferably tough crowd with a reputation for being impossible to please. The only good thing I can say about this series is that now the world knows why we're so intolerant of lore changes. Because once you allow even just one change, these people see it as you giving them permission to change all of it so as to be virtually unrecognizable. They can call us "ists" and "phobes" all they want, at Tolkien's Legendarium is where our sufferance stops. Always has been, always will be. No amount of burying their heads in the sand will save Amazon from complete and total humiliation, and this series will go down in history as one of media's biggest trainwrecks.

Because I read Tolkien's works as a child, I went on to educate myself on Celtic and Germanic lore, fae lore, etc., and I filled up multiple bookshelves with historic/anthropological/archeological works and fairy tales. I'm talking about northwestern and central Europe as being a place where epics happened irl and in legends. Diversity, as we think of it today, was not needed to make this area and time in history complete. If you think it does, then by all means stick to terrible adaptations that are completely and utterly devoid of soul and Tolkien's underlying messages (which unless you've read his work, I guarantee you do not know). Stick with your video games. Thats obviously where your heart lies and *we respect that.* Mine, and a lot of other peoples' hearts lie with histories, myths and Tolkien's Legendarium, and for the love of all that is holy *that deserves respect.* I'm not dunking on you dude, by all means please, you do you. You like things to "parallel our reality"? Well, great news! You're spoiled for choice!! Really, look around you, you've got it everywhere you look! Clearly Tolkien's Legendarium is not for you, and that's fine. No problem. Don't consume it then, and leave people who do enjoy it alone. Please leave us to our Legendarium, because the only place in which that exists is in - wait for it - *books!* I just... Is that really so difficult??
It's clearly Mithril in the casket Durin squared were looking at. Especially with a Balrog being shown at some point in the season

@@walrusrobot5483 I wouldn't necessarily say he was just trying to sound smart. I would imagine it's just an oversight. JSG is clearly a gigantic fan of the series, and knows his stuff. But when doing probably hours and hours of work to create these videos, it's probably hard to see the forest from the trees.
I will keep on watching this abomination just to enjoy your ripping it apart afterwards JSG, awesome work man 👌🏼 🙏🏼
Just goes to show, again, that money can't buy creativity. Some people are gifted at birth with creative powers; others, not so much.
That lady pushing Galadriel off the raft was their way of showing that being an elf doesn't excuse you from white privilege.

yes and some human lady is going to actually be able to do that to a thousands of year old elf Galadriel who is suppose to be a super soldier Sue killing ice trolls single handed, but she can't simply outfight a human woman. Show logic is just so dumb.
In the words of great dark mage Ceeju: "Ah, shit. There and back we go again".

This is one of the best recaps I have heard!
6:02 OK, let's ignore the anti-Tolkien elements for a moment and consider this purely from the point of cinematography. The torch is burning with a blue flame, it's soaked in alcohol. It's a trivial detail, true, but for such an expensive production, a little CGI work in post would have fixed this easily. Secondly, he's looking _at_ the flame. I'm sure it's fascinating, but he won't be able to see anything else, which is the sole point of carrying a torch. Thirdly, composition. Following all the lines and boundaries between dark and light, what is the viewer's eye drawn to? The campfire in the background. I doubt very much that this is the most important element of the scene. If this series is remembered, as well as a lesson in how not to write or publicize a show, it'll be a lesson in how not to film one.

That's actually not such a bad thing as far as film goes. In a movie, it's more important that they have the characters' faces illuminated than that they have the light shining realistically. A common example is any scifi movie involving a spacesuit, they ALWAYS have lights inside the helmet shining on the character's face, which would obviously blind them. But they need it because it's more important that the audience see their face than that the actor see the dark set.

@@orirune3079 Yes, the lighting itself is tolerable, the problem is that the actor is looking in the wrong direction. Compare the poster for _Shutter Island_ - DiCaprio's face is illuminated in a similar way, but he's looking over the flame, not at it.
You are telling me that the dwarves have a Trial by Stone like the Skeksis had in The Dark Crystal?
As someone who also loves The Matrix Reloaded... Yea. Once I learned that it was originally supposed to be a prequel and as a result like half of what was supposed to be in Revolutions got transplanted to Reloaded, the issues with both films made a lot more sense.
It's really like the writers and creators chose to mash some elements of D&D with Tolkien-in-name-only characters so they could 1--have characters appear in places quickly without the time it would take to travel there; teleportation circle anyone? and 2--introduce not-Gandolf to 3 evil sorceresses that try to kill him. It was so D&D-esque I wondered what their max HP was and how high not-Gandolf rolled to get out of that confrontation.
The more you review this the more confident I am in my writings that I'm doing.
So far my favourite takes on rings of power is that they casted Don Lemon as Legolas, and Uncle Ruckus as the old man harfoot.
I am new to your channel and subscribed. Thank you for posting well reasoned arguments. I've been a student of Tolkien for many years and appreciate your videos on the topic of Rings of Power. You've given me hope.
The shot of the dwarven chest is like the briefcase scenes in Pulp Fiction! It's Marcellus Wallace's soul! lmao🤣
the actress that plays the queen is actually a good cast and you can clearly see she takes it more serious than her coworkers. i was wrong about her casting and ill admit that.

Isn't that funny? That all the "racist" fans would find the BLACK female dwarf to be one of the BEST characters in the series so far? 🤷♂️ Sophia Nomvete is still an awful human being, though. In a sane world, her off-set interviews and verbal ejaculations should see her barred from decent society.

@@valaraukar_595 From what I've seen, the interviews were repetitively focused on her, and how important it was that she had been cast for the role as the first ever female dwarf. She barely mentioned the character at all, let alone how she had played the role, any anecdotes from the filming, etc. that could have drawn an audience into the story. Which is a shame, as her scenes were some of most engaging so far, perhaps because they are standard domestic friction and familiar territory for the writers.
Dwarf Kazad Dum looks more like Dwarf underground from Dragon Age Origin... which, in retrospect, might have been the better franchise to buy and riff off for a tv series that would compete with GoT.
Love this guy! Everything said is always on point 👌
