    Worst episode yet...? I kinda think so. Everything moves SO SLOWLY. The harfoots story barely moved at all. Arondir's storyline doesn't change from the moment of being captured, to the moment they're taking him to Adar. They could've done that right in the beginning of the show and NOTHING would have changed. The writing is amateurish. The pacing is abysmal. And the plot meanders into unnecessary places with meaningless consequences (often for characters we don't care about). And the slo-mo. THE SLO-MO!!! WHAT IN THE $#@! was that!? Did they get the slo-mo guys to be their Director of Photography on this episode?

    I hate that elves are not only hated by the entire world, but are also really incompetent fighters - except for our lead characters Galadriel and Arondir, who can fight off creatures all by themselves with superhuman abilities while the rest of the elves just die like flies. This is not what you would expect of the Elves after the War of Wrath. If we put aside lore (since this show has basically cast it into the Void), it seems like the show is trying to push a certain agenda that really doesn't align with a lot of the themes that Tolkien wanted to tell through his stories of Middle Earth. And that is disrespecting Prof. Tolkien as a writer, scholar and as the literal founder of the classical Western fantasy genre.

  • @matroska_5625

    @matroska_5625

    I think they overplay it, but it's not really that lore inaccurate. Tolkien said that people generally didn't trust elves, or even feared them. There's definitely a quote about humans fearing them, though I can't find it right now - at least not in LotR by CTRL+F for "distrust" or "fear". Maybe it's in the Silmarillion or another book. There's one about hobbits, though... "And as the days of the Shire lengthened they spoke less and less with the Elves, and grew afraid of them, and distrustful of those that had dealings with them; and the Sea became a word of fear among them, and a token of death, and they turned their faces away from the hills in the west." And vice versa: "Evil had been seen and heard there, sorrow had been known; the Elves feared and distrusted the world outside."

    Especialyl weird considering that so far NONE of the elves are even shown doing anything with horses :)! And all that could have been fixed easily, a simple scene in before, showing her interact with a horse, doing all the stuff one would do, being gentle and kind towards the creature, Elves should love to ride horses obviously. Not to mention like the case of Glorfindel's horse, they have close and strong bond with their mounts, and have them wear gem adorned harness (maybe horses would get better costumes than many of the elves in this tv show hehehe, I mean look at this description: "Suddenly into view below came a white horse, gleaming in the shadows, running swiftly. In the dusk its headstall flickered and flashed, as if it were studded with gems like living stars.", or Tolkien's own words; "I could, I suppose, answer: 'a trick-cyclist can ride a bicycle with handle-bars!' But actually bridle was casually and carelessly used for what I suppose should have been called a headstall. Or rather, since bit was added long ago . . . I had not considered the natural ways of elves with animals. Glorfindel's horse would have an ornamental headstall, carrying a plume, and with the straps studded with jewels and small bells; but Glor. would certainly not use a bit. I will change bridle and bit to headstall.") A scene that could previously take but few seconds of screen time, maybe showing her prepare to set out to cool off in the leaisure ride in the moonlight or something after returning angry from her 'quest' to Forodwaith, ass end of nothing :). Or the Elrond and Celebrimbor ride to Moria should have been shown as horse journey, anything really.

    In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort. The Hobbit: Chapter 1, first sentence

    In general portrayal of the hobbit in this show makes no sense, they want to imitate the Shire hobbits insularity, but they forget that if they made them wandering, the nomads, then they can't be this parochial and simple and peaceful, they would have to fight for survival in harsh world! Facing the elements and forces of nature, wandering through dangerous lands filled with monsters and dark creatures lingering in the shadow, wandering would make them less prone to be comfortable but naturally worried about all things they need do to do survive! You would then have more hardened hobbits, wilder, more primitive, more savage, more capable of actual combat and defending themselves when necessary (not that the Shire hobbits were not capable in that, oh boy once riled up they could be fierce little warriors) they should be using bows then (to explain that hobbits have great aim, they practice shooting from bows or simply hunt, though obviously there is also the lore problem, they use the Harfoots clan...which was always the hole builders, from which the name hobbit derives, so they would just hide in the ground when threatened, (and try to go and take out the badger from his hole), that because of that they are prone to settling so stay for longer periods before moving again (and only in some serious circumstances force them like growth of shadow or increase in hostile folk in the area which paradoxically made the Harfoots first to move out beyond the mountains as they fled in terror, I mean of all the breeds of Hobbits only Fallohide clan was more adventurous, bolder and were forest dwelling, nomadic hunters, they were courageous and so could face dangers on more even terms, and Fallohide because of that often became chiefs among hobbit clans). Hobbit wandering days would have to make care more about the outside world, because they are in the thick of it, they move about it! "At no time had Hobbits of any kind been warlike, and they had never fought among themselves. In olden days they had, of course, been often obliged to fight to maintain themselves in a hard world; but in Bilbo’s time that was very ancient history." So early Hobbits shouldn't yet be the same naive and totally unprepared for the dangers of the world around them, especially not as nomads! I would expect that early Hobbits would actually carry weapons, bows at least! Still that would not explain their weird appearance, all that crap in their hair and so on. If they really wanted to go all in on the wilder hobbits they needed to make them clothed in furs of hunter animals or something :).

    And what's maybe the worst thing, I think the writers didn't even realize how they made the harfoots callous little sociopaths. There needed to be conflict after the dad broke his foot, but he obviously could be carried in a cart by other harfoots. They had to plug that plot hole, so they just decided that harfoots as part of their culture don't help each other out and just abandon weaker members of the tribe. They are such bad writers that they probably didn't even realize this directly contradicted their earlier characterization of harfoots as benign creatures that help and rely on each other.

    This episode left me with a few questions: - Amazon accuse viewers of being racist, yet everyone is being racist towards the elves! Who harmed nobody, and are known for their wisdom and crafting skills. - What was the purpose of a slo-mo horse ride? To show a close-up of a horse's rear? - Elves are supposed to be wise, and Galadriel is several hundred years old at this point in the story. Yet all she ever does is demand, boss people around and act grumpy. After the horse ride she starts acting a bit more reasonable, but nobody knows why that change happens. - "Nobody falls behind and nobody walks alone" is such a creepy chant... They could have spent some of the crazy money to write a nice song with the same message. - If anyone who is old, frail, or injured gets left behind, harfoots don't deserve to be called intelligent beings... And why do none of them use a hairbrush? To show they are primitive? - If the prisoners of the orcs had axes, and could easily cut their chains with said axes, why haven't they done so ages ago? - Why does the dog (warg?) look so fake? Why did the orcs in the Peter Jackson movies look so much scarier? The technology and make-up are supposed to have improved since then...

    A few questions I have about the episode. 1) Why wouldn't any of the other hobbits who AREN'T helping push carts or anything help the guy who's injured? I mean, do they leave everyone who gets sick, injured, or is just too tired behind? And yet they claim to stand up for each other? Wow. 2) Sauron's "mark" seems incredibly stupid if it points right at Mordor/the Southlands. "Hey, I'm gonna leave a big honking hint to where I'm hiding all over the place. That'll show 'em!" 3) Why do they show these orcs fearing sunlight so much in some scenes, yet in others they're wandering around out in the light without any problem? I guess it's a plot-specific weakness. 4) Why do the orcs mercilessly kill all the other elves, but just happen to save Arondir? Oh wait, because he's a Named Character(tm). Never mind. Plot armor saves the day. 5) How on earth did the elves NOT NOTICE that giant swath of destruction going through the area? They can't be THAT freaking stupid. But then again, they're all men, so I guess they follow the typical "men are useless, women are all-powerful" trope that this show seems to be following. 6) Do the writers want us to hate Galadriel? Because I hate her. She's thoroughly unlikable as a character. She's boorish, crass, obnoxious, perpetually angry, lacks any semblance of wisdom or forethought, is completely lacking in diplomacy, and acts like a petulant child rather than a 3000+ year old elven woman who was renowned for her wisdom and grace.

    You can tell bad storytelling when each character or group of people have to have a distinctive line or moto in order to tell them apart (and these have no foundation or justification in the story anywhere): Numenor - The sea is always right. Harfoots - no one gets left behind (until they do). Elves - do you know why a boat floats and a stone cannot? Putting the lore and Tolkien's intent aside, you should be able to tell straight away when a character walks in or when a man-made structure is presented, what the defining features of their culture and history are. That is good worldbuilding. That is good storytelling. What Amazon is showing us, is not.

That's not how a "nomadic" society prospers & survives, since (a) sometimes people recover, and even injured/ older people can do things for the tribe, and (2) nomadic doesn't mean on the move 24/7, but of no fixed long-term address. Imagine if they had a sick tent in a small tent-settlement, with healers, herbal natural medicines, care of their weaker members. @@pedrogomesmoura Exactly!

Actress beauty makes no difference, if she was put there only for the diversity quota, if they wanted to do so with the lore of the world in question in mind, they would have her play a Haradrim woman, which would be both more interesting, for we would see a new culture explored and would allow them to depict tense relations with the colonizing Numenoreans who were specific 'race' unto themselves, the same critique can be used if similar stuff happened to Asian or other setting, of course then people have no problem complaining about so called 'whitewashing" the cast, appearance of charactern or entire peoples is part of lore and worldbuilding, if one makes a culture being of particular ethnicity one can expect that portrayal, similarly even with the fantasy creatures, say if we take a creature of humanoid shape from Japanese folklore, say.,..Yuki-onna the snow demon, nobody woudl find it weird that she would be played by Japanese woman. The show needs a tangible threat to move things forward and give a sense of urgency to the narrative. The only character with a threat to deal with is Arondir, and even then the story moves through the narrative with the pace of a snail,(the escape attempt simply resets the narrative). There needs to be an imminent disaster for Galadriel to prevent, the alliance with the dwarves needs an enemy, the hobbits should be fleeing for their lives. There needs to be something to create tension, to drive the narrative. A nebulous Sauron planning in the shadows doesn’t create tension because we have no clue as to how far his plans have come to fruition. I used no obscenity or profanity. I did not include advertisements or URL links. I did not promote any product. I can only think that since my review was mentioning similar things as other reviews Amazon's gatekeeping moderator decided to remove my right of free expression under this policy: "...repeated posts that make the same point excessively are considered spam." So just because a negative post resonates with other ones Amazon considers it spam and not worthy of posting, yet I have read many posts Amazon would consider positive that are almost verbatim repetitious and are posted. Those are 'tunnels'?! Aren't they supposed to be all underground :) hell this looks more like highway construction site hahaha. The Orcs would make a tunnel for specific reason, not merely some vague highway underground, tunnels connecting the orc cities, settlements beneath the mountains...sure great, an escape tunnel why not, but entire net of underground roads leading everywhere, even for them too much bother. Enormoous work for little gain, why dig when they just...come out do their thing and return, that's what the Orcs always donethey come out of their holes in the mountains, raid, do their business and return home. It's also easier to maintain those tunnels if they are carved in solid rock of the mountains (though it's harder to make than simply digging them in the looser earth) a tunnel through the soil can collapse without proper prep, it can cause landslide and sinkholes form, not that the Orcs care for safety :). Still the closest to use of tunnels this way, is those tunnels being secret ways out near Morannon in order to surprise and ambush forces coming on to the fortifications from behind: "[All] the hills and rocks about the Morannon were filled with hidden foes, and the shadowy defile beyond was bored and tunnelled by teeming broods of evil things." Also as the example of the slag piles near Morannon show, they would produce enormous amount of refuse :) that would take years of work. "Therefore Aragorn now set the host in such array as could best be contrived; and they were drawn up on two great hills of blasted stone and earth that orcs had piled in years of labour. Before them towards Mordor lay like a moat a great mire of reeking mud and foul-smelling pools." Morannon and the Hills of the Teeth, on the sides of Cirith Gorgor were specially fortified nad so had lots of tunnels and underground forts for the Orcs to garrison it, it had purpose: "Across the mouth of the pass, from cliff to cliff, the Dark Lord had built a rampart of stone. In it there was a single gate of iron, and upon its battlement sentinels paced unceasingly. Beneath the hills on either side the rock was bored into a hundred caves and maggot-holes: there a host of orcs lurked, ready at a signal to issue forth like black ants going to war." TTT, Book IV, Ch 3 The Black Gate is Closed All those still didn't make them dig a massive tunnel to reach their destination of attack :) they didn't dig a giant tunnel across Ithilien or anything like that. And in the context of the tv show, the tunnels were made specifically to reach those towns and emerge from underground but now they work on the ground level WHAT?! This is just weird, in any case for Orcs it would be easier to just....move about after sunset, move at night hahaha.

    So, not only is Elendil born and an adult before the rings have been forged, which means 2500 years of history is just GONE. They're honestly treating him like a nobody? Elendil? He's one of the Andunie. Does Silmarien not exist in this world? The dude has Narsil and the ring of Barahir for Eru's sake! And where is Narsil? Is it with his dad?

    The pacing I can suffer but I cannot fathom a story that breaks logic and common sense without proper explanation and justification. Especially the half-foot tradition of leaving people behind, not only is the tradition itself felt unrealistic to actual human social behaviors, it does not give any reasonable explanations as to why. Nori's father twisting his ankle and the leader just decide to abandon him and his entire family does not make sense in the slightest to me, and is painful to watch. He never forbidden anyone else from helping Nori's family, and multiple half-foots were shown in the migration scene to have light baggage only on their backs, fully capable of helping with Nori's cart. And yet everyone just pretend Nori's problems don't exist and continue on their merry way. The writer did not bother to show any of the members showing any compassion for a wounded member of the tribe, that's just too cold and inhuman to feel right.

    They are not human, the are shown as the least strong race in the lore - and if somebody is not able to travel anymore will be left behind - although I did not see it that way, the families are helping each other and they remind themselves in a religious services whom they lost on the way.

I took the opportunity and watched the next episode (of course, not on Amazon) within 20 seconds. I'm calling it now. Anarion dies in Numenor because he won't leave the past behind as Eledil thinks and stays on the west of the island. He won't actually appear in the show. His made up sister, the architect, will build Gondor and jointly rule with her brother Isildur. This doesn't violate their agreement with the Tolkien estate that no character who lives the Third age dies in the second as Anarion dies at the Siege of Barad-dur at the very end of the Second age.
