The Rings of Power REVIEW : Episode 7 : They ALL Deserve Death

Ойын-сауық

As expected, The Rings of Power episode 7, "The Eye", starts off with nearly everyone surviving the deadly volcanic cloud. Thus, starting with that unbelievable entrance, Galadriel suddenly transforms into a wise mentor, while the Dirty Little Sociopaths seem to forget their villainous tradition, and it's confirmed that Mithril is indeed the magic metal elixir of long-life.

I think this episode was supposed to be "character growth" for galadriel and the harfoots. Galadriel finally gets "humbled" and realizes her errors, the harfoot's "hearts bigger than our feet" was meant to be admonishing cruel past customs. Except none of it works, bc there has been no natural progression of the story. Everyone just suddenly does a 180. Too many plot contrivances just turn it into a farce.

This upset me because I actually like Disa’s character because she actually has some characterization, along with Adar for the same reason. You can tell she loves Durin and treats Elrond with profound kindness. The conversations between the three have felt the most natural in the show. Seeing her manipulate Durin was kinda odd as we haven’t seen her show any “dwarven greed” thus far and has shown a respect for the mining process when exploring new mines.

It's not even the time between episodes 6 or 7. To them it's literally a couple of hours later that afternoon. Brownwyn (or whatever the healer woman is called) for example has been shot by two arrows, was on deaths door, had excruciating surgery, took a volcanic explosion face on, walked out of said volcanic eruption (unscathed, no burns, no lung damage) and had a high meeting with a queen later that same day... still looks as fresh as a daisy. So for Galadriel, a thousands of years old being, to suddenly become a moral crusader just a couple of hours after threatening to torture a guy (Ardur) by keeping him alive so she can slowly kill all his children infront of him before killing him also is an insult to our intelligence.

With apologies to Mark Twain, the rules of narrative fiction require: That a tale shall accomplish something and arrive somewhere. But the "Rings of Power" tale accomplishes nothing and arrives in air. They require that the episodes in a tale shall be necessary parts of the tale, and shall help to develop it. But as the "Rings of Power" tale is not a tale, and accomplishes nothing and arrives nowhere, the episodes have no rightful place in the work, since there was nothing for them to develop. They require that the personages in a tale, both dead and alive, shall exhibit a sufficient excuse for being there. But this detail has been overlooked in the "Rings of Power" tale. They require that when the author describes the character of a personage in the tale, the conduct and conversation of that personage shall justify said description. But this law gets little or no attention in the "Rings of Power" tale, as the hobbits' case will amply prove. They require that the personages of a tale shall confine themselves to possibilities and let miracles alone; or, if they venture a miracle, the author must so plausibly set it forth as to make it look possible and reasonable. But these rules are abandoned to Shelob in the "Rings of Power" tale. They require that the author shall make the reader/listener/viewer feel a deep interest in the personages of his tale and in their fate; and that he shall make the reader love the good people in the tale and hate the bad ones. But the viewer of the "Rings of Power" tale dislikes the good people in it, is indifferent to the others, and wishes they would all get drowned together. They require that the characters in a tale shall be so clearly defined that the reader/listener/viewer can tell beforehand what each will do in a given emergency. But in the "Rings of Power" tale, this rule is stabbed with a Morgul blade.

Great review, thanks! I respectfully slightly disagree that the Rivendell elves would have taken Frodo's mithril shirt. It would be much easier (and sooner) to take it off/away from frail, elderly Bilbo! Why would the elf "commander of the northern armies" find a random teenager and have a long, soulful conversation in which the thousands of years old elf would casually mention that she had (past tense!) a husband. Why did she tell this young male teenage human (¿who is his dad?) about this, but she has never told anybody else? The motivation seems disturbing. (What is next? "Sometimes I get very lonely ...") And then she made him a soldier? Metaphor for coming of age? And why is she so upset/revenge-y about her brother being killed but never mentioned her husband, whom she mocked the last time she saw him? Why didn't she help him fix his armour? Obviously she didn't care and wasn't gonna be too fussed about it if he got killed. (Since when do elves have ill fitting armour? I mean before ROP.) Galadriel is really checking off all the boxes of villainy.

Look at the roman forts that were instituted by Sulla for a guide.

The idiots writing this abomination are just like most modern writers; they don't give a damn about anything except how it will look on the screen. They have what they think is an interesting idea, or at least an idea that might look cool on the screen, so they write something up and film it. They can't waste time thinking about how any of those things might interact with other story elements, or the consequences of those actions / events. And that's really what it comes down to...people no longer consider the consequences of their actions, or if they acknowledge those consequences at all, it's to simply whine about how those consequences aren't their fault. When that's how so many people behave in real life, it's guaranteed they'll write stories in that way.

It’s just not a good show, although I do appreciate the CGI because that’s very good. Story is not, acting is not, characters aren’t well thought out, it’s boring, it often doesn’t make sense, the audience is expected to overlook its flaws, and most importantly, they aren’t respecting Tolkiens art. The source work is like a suggestion to them, as opposed to the rules they should work within to respect the artist they are building on.

Notice how now Sauron, sorry Halbrand has a reason/excuse to go to Lindon and meet Gil-galad and likely Grandmabrimbor. Though he goes from being on deaths door to now being able to ride almost the entire lengths of middle earth to from the edge of Mordor to Lindon with a soured wound. I have to disagree that it was the best episode, though not that the bar is very high for that anyway. Despite things happening, nothing actually happened - or a better way of saying it is that lots of stuff was said to make little things happen. I'm all for episodes dedicated to character growth but its not growth, it is spontaneous 180 character switch and contradictions on character traits that have been established. Celeborn mystery box - "he is dead, he went to war and I never saw him again" / Isildur and Beric getting the Aragon and Brego treatment with a death fakeout that we know is a pointless mystery since we know he lives. The final episode is going to be all about "reveals". Isildur is not dead, Halbrand is sauron (even if the reveal is not to the characters, the audience will find out). The cult will assume Offbrandalf is sauron. Daddy Durin reveals he knew about the Balrog. And we are all meant to act surprised. Regent Queen will be challenged as unfit to lead because she is blind. her father is dead when she returns.

It's quite possible that the current characters will never find out that Halbrand has been Sauron in disguise all along. Personally I believe that the creepy priestesses will help Sauron to get a more powerful new body. I have no idea though, why they are interested in non-Gandalf aka the meteor man. It could be a case of mistaken identity.

  • @frocat5163

Yeah, there are a tremendous number of reasons why one can survive near lava, despite the tremendous heat. Lava is just melted rock (mostly). You can go to Hawaii and stand pretty close to lava flows without being harmed. A volcanic eruption in a volcano that has either never erupted or hasn't erupted for a long time, will release all manner of nastiness that will absolutely kill anyone anywhere near the thing. From the clips I've seen (I've not watched any more of this show than what's been in videos trashing it on KZread), 100% of the characters from the last episode should absolutely be dead. The gasses that would have been present in that cloud of "smoke" that enveloped everyone after the eruption would have prevented the characters within it from breathing for far longer than anyone can hold their breath. But, once again, the morons writing this garbage are only concerned with how something will appear on screen...they don't give a damn about how the story fits together.

They want the visual of a big and deadly explosion but can't deal with the consequences, everyone survives, so stupid. HORROR! Galadriel's comment of Celeborn finding her dancing seems like a direct lift of Beren finding Luthien dancing. Luthien - inspired by Edith Tolkien, quite specifically not only her effect on Tolkien but also her dancing! He even had "Luthien" inscribed on her gravestone. They have gone beyond simply disrespecting the work and are now openly disrespecting Tolkien himself as a person and denigrating his dear wife with allusions to their horrible self-obsessed, entirely unlovely character they name Galadriel.

I'm not well versed in Middle Earth lore at all, having only read the Hobbit and LOTR books and seen the movies (the movies inspired me to read the books) but thankfully The One Ring and a few other YT channels and online sources have helped me understand some (but so far a long way from all as there's so much of it) of the main themes and events of the Second Age, or at least enough to recognise that RoP actually has nothing to do with Tolkien's writing beyond using a few names. Timelines and events have been distorted beyond recognition or completely rewritten, the very essence of elves has been fundamentally changed (the mithril nonsense is absurd), and the lore characters bear no resemblance to those found in Tolkien's books. Telling us in episode SEVEN that Celeborn went MIA a few centuries - or even millennia - ago is the cherry on the cake. Did they hastily edit that scene in after realising they forgot about him? Worse, even if we put all the actual lore aside and gauge the show purely in its own right, it's an dire mess of bad writing, atrocious pacing, absurd dialogue, non-existent character development and tenuous viewer engagement. Despite the enormous budget almost everything feels small scale and strangely cheap and the 'plot' (I use the term very loosely) relies entirely upon mystery boxes and contrivance. A 13 year old novice Dungeon Master trying a first campaign set in Middle Earth would likely present better scenarios than the writers of this have done. I genuinely feel for the actors given they have so very little to work with. All that said, if people are enjoying RoP then great. I'm actually somewhat envious because I really wanted to enjoy it too, but it's just not working at all for me. And hey, if the show somehow inspires some viewers to read the books then there's at least a silver lining to the disappointment of it all, but I fear that it's just as likely that viewers new to Tolkien might look at this mess of a show, assume it's a faithful adaptation, and wonder why on earth Tolkien is so highly respected in the first place.

I did a little research. The volcano island of Krakatau exploded in year 1883. The eruption was a so called phreatomagmatic eruption. This is an eruption in which water is involved. The lava or a pyroclastic density current and the water come in direct contact and the volcano literally explodes. Krakatau was completely destroyed back then. The shock wave was so strong it went around earth for 7 times. The explosion was so loud, you could hear it up to 4800km away. What followed was a massive amount of ash in the air, very hot pyroclastic flows and gas over the water, a massive tsunami that destroyed a lot of the island Java and Sumatra. The pyroclastic flows that rushed over the water reached north Sumatra in very little time cause they were 800km/h fast. The north of Sumatra is around 1300km away from Krakatau. The waves of the tsunami were two times higher then the ones in 2004. 36000 people died. What we see in the show is this kind of eruption cause there is water involved and it hits the lava directly. The whole of middle earth should at least hear this. No one and nothing near the eruption can survive this.

Durin IV is changing opinions each episode: from "I distrust elves and must do what my father says", to "I fking love elves and Elrond, must save them even by ignoring my father, the ruling King". Poor writing. Durin III seems to level headed, which isn't bad, but I was totally lacking the greed of the dwarves. Disa is the one that displays that, and I was actually grateful.

You know as far as fantasy goes there are possible ways to possibly survive a volcano blast. The only problem is they choose one of the most grounded fantasies to exist. If this was set in a world where magic and monsters were as typical as seeing a tree than I might buy a powerful wizard or elf surviving something like this. Tolkien's world was always in a state of decline. By the end of the second age all the powerful monsters and elves are mostly gone outside a few exceptions. I'm an anime fan I see god knows how many OP characters. Here's the thing though anime builds up their characters properly. They give them personalities and a cool backstory behind them. You learn what they're capable of throughout the story. It's always a show not tell mentality which is what I crave in western fantasy shows. Don't tell me! SHOW ME! That's the main problem here we don't even Galadriel's limits or what she has at her disposal. She was fine searching for one of the most powerful beings in middle earth but hides when there are few orcs in a forest. She's fine riding upside down on a horse and yet gives her sword away to a complete novice. Her character flips so often I think she's gone from an oak plank to a pine plank. She talks about Celeborn this episode which you might think is a good thing but it's not as it now makes you wonder why the hell were you out searching for Sauron but not your husband and lover. That's insane that's like a mother searching for a kidnapper instead of the kidnapped child. Yes she would want to punish the bad guy but loved ones would always come first. That's basic human nature.

For connoisseur of "Jumping the Shark", the survival of all named cast members in the face of a 1000+ Celsius 500 mph pyroclastic flow, without so much as a singed eye brow, must rank exceeding high.

Game of Thrones didn't unlock Fast Travel until Season 7 but Rings of Power unlocked it out of the gate. As for season quality, I know some shows got off to a rocky start before they got their footing but that was in creating their own story. Here they have all this rich lore from Tolkien who has been popular for more than half a century and close to a century with The Hobbit but they have so deviated from it that it's no longer a Tolkien story in the slightest. The themes, characters, lore have been so changed to be unrecognizable to anyone with a passing knowledge of Tolkien's works. Without a complete reboot, this show is doomed to mediocrity and early cancellation.

The only issue with what you're saying is that these idiots don't actually have access to most of that lore. They can only use the events within _The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings,_ and LotR Appendices. If they were to adhere to closely to events in, say, _The Silmarillion_ or _The Book of Lost Tales_ or _Unfinished Tales,_ they'd almost certainly be sued by the Tolkien estate and (possibly) lose the rights to continue making the show. I certainly wouldn't be sad if that happened... Also, despite only having access to those three sources, _competent_ writers could have written an interesting story that, while deviating from the story from those off-limits sources, would still have maintained the essence of Tolkien. Instead, they decided to chuck a poorly written YA fantasy/romance novel, a soap opera, and a bunch of unrealistic "diversity" into a blender, and then dumped it out all over our faces.

This show should probably be seen as the Second Age with Sauron as storyteller. For example this could be what Sauron shows Denethor in the Palantir. That explains why the hobbits as well as the main elven and men characters are portrayed as evil or stupid, while the viewer is inclined to feel sympathy for the orcs. Of course Sauron does not care the slightest for the wellbeing of the orcs, but he wants to reduce the resistance against orcs among men -- this benefits Sauron because the orcs are easier for him to control. The men of the west are Saurons worst enemies, and by distorting their Numenorian history he weakens their identity and makes them dislike their own kind. This is the kind of propaganda Sauron uses to destroy civilizations from within. Similarly he makes a lot of characters look like easterlings and southerlings, to further reduce the western identity. This makes it easier for him to mix his enemies with people which he believes are more easily manipulated, and he anticipates that a mixed civilization will be weakened by internal conflicts. The end purpose of the propaganda is always the same, namely to allow Sauron to dominate all life.

Great take, love the dwarves too. I went into the series without any knowledge of the books and only a vague memory of the LotR series. I assumed the time line was a thousand years in the past before the LotR series and Elrond was the only name that drew any connection to the LotR series for me. I thought this was Sauron's origin story, so I thought the man that fell from the sky was Sauron, but something happened and he forgot he was evil. It didn't even occur to me that it was Gandalf. The man being Sauron creates so much more tension, since they made the harfoots so unlikable I figured they were all going to get killed once Sauron remembered who he was. Might even turn the girl harfoot that helped him into a orc or something. The backstory should have had Adar poison or curse Sauron, to free himself and his children. Free from Sauron Adar and his orc children would be misunderstood victims trying to fight their evil nature and find a home, Adar would struggle with his children wanting to murder everyone they come across during their migration. They end up in Mordor because it is uninhabitable by normal people and the only place that will keep his children safe and the rest of the world safe from them. While Sauron is with the harfoots regaining his memories and true nature. Once restored he seeks revenge on Adar and reclaims his orc army. In the end everything Adar did to help his people only served to put Sauron exactly where he needed to be and to become even stronger. Season 2 once his kingdom in Mordor is fully established he begins to form the rings of power. The surviving traumatized harfoots flee as far north as they can the establish the shire. It writes itself.

We know Guyladriel is a Noldor elf, and elves even though they are immortal ( as in dont age and dont get disease, they still can die and be killed by weapon, by natural disasters and so on). There is no way they could have survived Pyroclastic Flow as it will destroy everything in its path. The best evidence that even Noldor Elves could not survive volcanic eruptions comes from Tolkien himself. The following is a passage from The Silmarillion: ..."and the Mountains of Iron belched forth fires of many poisonous hues, and the fume of them stank upon the air, and was deadly. Thus Ard-galen perished, and fire devoured its grasses; and it became a burned and desolate waste, full of a choking dust, barren and lifeless. Thereafter its name was changed, and it was called Anfauglith, the Gasping Dust .Many charred bones had there their roofless grave; for many of the NOLDOR perished in that burning, who were caught by the running flame and could not fly to the hills. the Showrunners are just abusing the plot armor on her and the rest of the main characters.

I don't mind Durin the elder saying they were created from fire and stone, necessarily. Rights to the Silmarillion and other works aside, it's not crazy to think that the Dwarves would believe their creator would have forged them from fire and stone, as it would fall along their own love for creating things from fire and stone. I take it less as fact and more of a story passed down through the ages.

The only positive thing to come of the show is that the crappy writing prompted me to order all of and begin reading Tolkien's works, which I've never read one of. I started with the Silmarillion. My suspicions of how bad they could have got the lore of Numenor has almost been undersold by the details this dumpster fire of a show could have filled in over several seasons. It also got me to scurry the internet for Middle-Earth maps because just watching the great LotR trilogy I didn't need to because the movie established distance. This show depicts teleportation great.

At this stage I’d actually be happy if season 2 came and didn’t include anything from the first season and the real Galadriel wakes up and rolls over to Celeborn and said fuck me! That was a nightmare and we get a true love letter to Tolkien with new writers and show runners…perhaps even a different studio…you know, just saying

The Showrunners successfully transported Tolkien to modern day. Which is fantastic, when the century long fascination was escaping into a mythology from long times gone, masterfully in all details created by Professor Tolkien so it felt like a authentic saga. And it took him a lifetime until now these folks did a great job modernizing and rewriting this mythology in only a couple of episodes, can’t wait to see what’s more to come!
