There have been a number of very encouraging studies out of the Netherlands on the topic of “sex care” within the sex work discussion. Sex is regarded as a basic human right and the Dutch subsidize a certain number of appointments with sex care and sex workers for disabled citizens. This has shown to be incredibly affirming and has been shown to address some of the profound feelings of anger, frustration, shame, and loneliness of disabled people. Sex work includes far more than just sexual acts. Sex workers, especially sex care workers, are quite literally experienced in helping people explore their sexuality in a healthy manner. They can clients how to masturbate, safely explore sexual desires, or literally just spend time with someone. There’s a huge industry is non-sexual sex work: activities like the girlfriend (or boyfriend) experience, sex education, or just cuddling with clients in a safe, completely non-sexualized manner. Sex workers _absolutely_ provide intimacy for their clients if that’s what they want. Being open and honest about one’s emotional needs (and expectations) is no less important with a sex worker than a potential partner. Just because a sex worker is being paid for a service doesn’t mean they’re somehow incapable of providing intimacy. Anyone who thinks this has obviously never had a (good) therapist or psychiatrist. No one thinks legalized or (preferably) decriminalized sex work is going to solve the systemic consequences of patriarchy like sex trafficking, misogyny, or “toxic” masculinity - that is to say the exacerbation of atomization and alienation all of us, but especially young men, face. _Nothing_ will solve _everything_ , but we must do _everything_ to solve _something_ .

@@wafflepoet5437 The Netherlands does a better job of taking care of its citizens than the US. When you have a social context that makes it easier to form connections with other people, find a job, and have a reasonably good quality of life, it makes sense how sex work could provide something valuable, like in your example of disabled people. But in the US, paying someone for intimacy isn’t going to fix the issue on any level. The root cause of alienation has nothing to do with lack of sex or lack of intimacy. Those are the symptoms of our culture and economic environment. So of course, decriminalize it. But expecting that to be any part of the solution is crazy. You’re just going to end up with the further commodification of sex and intimacy, because the social environment limits these people from being able to actualize these things in their personal lives.

One could argue that the issue of male loneliness and alienation is 10 times worse in those FDS communities where the church elders go out of there way to marry as many women as possible while actively exhiling any man that's too handsome and funneling most of the actual "surplus" young men to a life of forced labor....yet you don't hear any stories about one of these men shooting up their community.

However being true to oneself and aware of one’s place in life (class, privilege etc) is key. And even when it comes to finding a partner. Make it about love and connection and not systemic. The answer to what a left response would look like is directly connected to what the left would look like if it was (or was on the way to being) a powerful organized force in society. We don't even have to invent something new. In the past, organizations and unions had meeting places and clubs for people to join. Places where people were actively involved in "the struggle" and optimally, places to just hang out that functioned as community centers. People also met on the proverbial front lines. They met doing real shit irl - because the left had organized itself enough to create those places to meet - and yes, even have fun. Even if we started there, say, with meet ups of like-minded people to just have fun, we'd be in a better position than we are now. I also like the idea of what Paul Jay was creating in Baltimore (before he was purged, or whatever happened). Not only was it an alternative media operation, he was creating a kind of community center where people could gather to do all kinds of things. Imagine if Bernie would have turned the whole network he built of volunteers and donors into that - or imagine they decided to do it themselves in their own communities, and stayed connected to all of the other people building a community center in their communities...imagine they had plans, goals, and strategies to build power together and become a movement...well, you get the idea...

It may sound condescending, but in many cases there's a kernel of truth to it. You're not going to make meaningful connections with new people that leads anywhere by posting on reddit or twitter. You're not going to get any sort of interpersonal reward by not taking an interpersonal risk. Where are the people who are also interested in things you are? What do they do? Where do they go? And why are you not going there? Convincing yourself that the world is only built for "chads" or "extroverts" is self-selecting yourself out of meaningful interaction from the beginning. Upvoting "care and feeding of your inner introvert" posts on facebook isn't the risk that's going to reward you in any way. You're not going to get a phone call out of the blue where one of your cousins magically has the perfect person for you to date, online dating apps are mostly a scheme to take money from lonely men, and "male power seminar" culture is mostly just the same with a hefty dose of misogyny. If you're involved with a mostly online culture that has in-person meetups, for the love of god go to them. But if you're involved in online cultures that mostly just revolve around moping about how everyone's sad, get the hell away from those, those are counterproductive. Are there some online cultures that are neither? Absolutely - my musical interests (for instance) mean I'm involved with online cultures that are both local and international and the latter are largely people I'll never meet but it's about culture, not moping. And men, if you want to compliment someone, don't compliment bodies. It's going to make you a creep. Compliment things people have made conscious decisions about. Nobody chose to be their weight that day, or have their particular figure that month. But they did choose their shoes, or to wear a shirt of an artist you like, to say something interesting about something you care about, or to be at a niche event in the first place.

This issue is a matter of resource distribution and the lack of gainful secure employment. As the economy becomes more and more precarious and more of a gig economy less of us have a chance of creating a secure lifestyle with a place of our own and because we live in this hyper individualized society where the concept of community barely exists and everybody seems to just think we all exist in a vacuum, that lack of gainful employment and security in our own lives reflects back on us that we're massive losers; which we are. But it's not because of a lack of gumption or individual failings necessarily it's literally a lack of available gainful secure employment. I think their focus on phones is odd. Yes they are a distraction but not really the main issue. I hate to reduce everything to class buuuuuut, I can't seem to help it. I'm certain if I had more access to resources I would have 200% more confidence as a mate. Because I'm unemployed most of the time, living at home again after two decades of trying to make money and utterly failing at it, my self esteem is nonexistent. I have good things going for me but I can't share them because of my complete lack of material and social status which are inextricably linked to one another.

I don't think lack of sex is the main issue, but rather the problem that "symbolizes" the underlying problem of alieantion and atomization of society. While the lack of intimacy tends to be what's most talked about, most of the "problematic" young man, once or if, they have sex, would still feel and be, as miserable as before. You don't have to give tham a narrative where they are the "main charachter" neither tell them they are "excess" they will live a live of misery. It comes down to the prospect of unfullfilness that permeates their lives, result of exploitation, that is, whatever they create in a professional environment, will never be theirs. The issue would be adressed in older times, by a patriarchy that, for all intends and porpuses would "bribe" man, by making woman property. However, with the introduction of women in the work force, the pill and abortion coming into society, that's no longer possible. That's why all this "gurus" talking about masculinity, will never talk about work but rather how women are mean, and very insensitive to the "needs" of men. The left only has to point to the contradiction between boss and employer. "You work 12 hours, not being able to form a family or sustain one, while the dude you work for is offering his wife the 3rd car this year". "How can you call yourself a man, if you work for another man and pay for his lifestyle". The only purpose of patriarchy, is to create class traitors, and to keep the male workforce subjugated.

Just like drug prohibition, sex work being a crime creates a black market that creates crime and makes sex workers less safe and more open to exploitation. Just like prohibition of drugs, just b/c it’s illegal that does not stop the practice from taking place, it just gives organized crime larger profits. The knowledge that rapes could then actually be reported (and therefore the likelihood of a prosecution would increase), would in and of itself be a deterrent to at least some degree. When rapists know their victims can't report it due to risk of being arrested themselves when sex work itself is illegal, more rapes occur. When sex work is legalised, rapes are more likely to be reported, prosecutions are more likely to happen, and this is often a deterrent to rapists. I'm super blackpilled on the sexlessness crisis. Realistically, I don't really think there's any viable solution for straight men. I don't even think access to affordable housing would help at all, most people who are still living at home can realistically have sex. Not that legalizing sexwork is the solution, but it would certainly help a bit. It would serve as another "vent" for excess male sexual energy, just like PMO and all the other "vents". Like a bandaid. We're gonna become Japan 2.0, unfortunately. Nothing can stop this.

Not to sound like the Clara Sorenti here, but do you think the increased acceptance of trans people is going to help things? Sexlessness is a problem the trans community is very familiar with and if straight men have idols that say that it's OK to be with someone that used to be a guy and that it doesn't make you gay (not that being gay matters anyway) it may bode better for society than the current course? Then again being terminally online myself, Twitter makes trans women look a lot more common than they actually are.

I literally can't provide a secure environment of my own for them so why the hell would I have confidence? Ever? Feudalism used to exist. Now it doesn't. That's a pretty big change I'd say. In the last hundred years we went from not taxing the rich at all in the early 20th century to taxing them around 94% and creating the New Deal. Before the New Deal and Social Security half of all elderly people lived in complete poverty and now we're back to not really taxing the rich at all again and Social Security minimum wage and all the things the New Deal created have been whittled away to mean next to nothing nowadays. These are all structural changes buddy. The USSR existed. Now it doesn't. That's also an example of massive change. Wtf are you talking about?

They have it backwards: it isn't that men who aren't getting laid therefore aren't earning money, it is the reverse- men aren't earning money, which means that they aren't getting laid. Dating and girlfriends cost money (ask any man who dates or has a girlfriend), and when you are broke, as the song says "I don't want no scrub" or if you prefer "she's a golddigger". It's 'no money means no love', it's not 'no love means no money'. Women don't help you get jobs, but money helps you get women (not required, but it helps, to the point that it is pretty much required). Also, it is a serious problem. If you study empires, this is usually how they fall- a large group of unmarried, unemployed men. If you want anger, violence, and revolution, then that group is a good thing, but if you want peace, harmony, and cooperation, then having a large population of unmarried, unemployed men is a sign of doom. Men with no hope/prospects tend to start looking for the reason that their fathers and grandfathers had success and they didn't- essentially looking for someone to blame. That can either lead to civil war and ethnic cleansing, or violent revolution against the system/government. So if you want to avoid mass death, give men money, so that they can get laid. Lastly, nihilism isn't a mental disorder; it is the intelligent, rational response to the situation that we are in. If anything, looking at the world today and still having hope would be the mental disorder, namely being delusional.

I’ll admit, I do have a soft spot for Jordan Peterson. Not his politics or how crazy he’s gotten recently, but his self help stuff honestly did help me and got me out of a rut. Just his podcasts talking about getting yourself together and growing up as a man and having confidence in yourself. They really did make me improve myself and gave me the boost I needed to start dating again and it actually worked for me. He never really was unique with any of his solutions, but something does separate him from the crowd. A chapo guest once joked how it was funny that Peterson was a Jungian. Consider that his first best seller book was Maps of Meaning (Mom) and he told people to clean their rooms… there’s something more Freudian than Jungian about that. There’s a glimpse of something fascinating in that observation. I think interest in his messaging stuck because it was conveyed with compassion and sincerity, and not because of anything unique or new in the message itself. Maybe the message made an impact before I anyone fulfilled the commitment to “clean the room”. I can notice that quality in some of the misguided prescriptions or some of his more odious takes. People might just be listening for the delivery, and not because of the prescription. If you’re starved of compassion and affection, you might be more receptive to a compassionate and affectionate messenger.

That 1/3 under 30 being virgins could be the most significant factoid any of us have ever heard as it represents a huge change in fundamental human behavior. I mean you can talk about cell phones or the internet and cultural revolutions blah blah blah but bottlenecks on Y chromosome diversity will have permanent and irreversible physical impacts on mankind and what our potential is. We've seen extreme periods in human history before where much smaller proportions of men are getting all the punani. Most of us are their descendants, which is probably why we are such pieces of crap. It's anyone's guess how men in different societies are going to eventually react to this state of affairs but I can't think it's going to be pleasant for anyone. Hopefully we don't run out of soy.
