Karl may not have known it but he was basically contemplating the mind-body problem within cartesian dualism. The answer in my view is that the "brain controls you", you don't control the brain. You are not actually your brain, your brain is a physical non-thinking structure. You are reducible to an awareness or consciousness which arises from the chemical processes within the brain. We, ourselves, are really just phenomena that arise from physical structures like brains, and as a phenomena you cannot possibly "do" anything, because an awareness cannot by itself exert force on the physical world. And though you cannot "do" anything, and do not have free will, you sense that you do because of the hallucination of the "self" as a feature of autonoetic consciousness which arose as a byproduct of the complex neural network of homo sapiens. Thus you, everything you think, feel, believe, perceive etc. are controlled by the brain which is itself controlled by the environment and physical laws. So ya, your brain is in charge of you.

That is not what he was talking about at all, he was talking about the conscious mind vs subconscious which is a far deeper problem that you, ricky and steven all seemed unable to grasp.

@@zzzELEVENzzz I think Michael is spot on. It is the conscious mind (Karl´s awareness) vs the subconscious (Karl´s brain with its chemical processes that generate that consciousness and control it)

Karls asking a deep philosophical thing here that most people at some point think about for some time and thencjust get on with their life. It strikes at the nature of consciousness and identity. And Ricky and Stephen are just ridiculing him when this is one of the deepest things Karl has ever said imo.

Ultimately it's just down to how he delivers his thoughts. The way he described that was simply him remembering something he forgot, so it seems like he's talking nonsense. Had he used getting an erection in class as an example, where you tell yourself not to think about it, but then it happens just before the teacher calls you to the front to write down an equation, that would make more sense. You, the person, are saying no, but the brain does what it wants and boom, bad time for you. It still isn't two separate beings controlling you, but it's an example Ricky & Steve could probably relate to and understand more since we've all been there at some point, but then again they'd just joke that he got a woody in the class with a male teacher so I guess nothing would help him convey his thoughts.

This is one of the times when he has a good question and I'm not sure why they are laughing at him. Ricky says "You are your brain". That's exactly the opposite of whst someone like Eckhart Tolle would say.

"How does your brain work?" I know he's asking about one aspect specifically but the fact he asks a question that people spend their whole lives studying and never learn everything about to Ricky and Steve like they're qualified to answer makes me laugh every time.

Karl just independently comes up with the theory of the Bicameral Mind one day... truly the philosopher we need in these times.

Karl's talking about the process of remembering something out of nowhere when he should've remembered it when it was applicable but he states it completely differently and its making them focus on his wording rather than the meaning

This is the only bit where karl is right, and asking a genuine question but ricky is so sure he knows everything that makes him ridicule karl, we're not one entity but a complex of entities formed like a school of fish or ants or bees stuck together,cells, to survive better and that's what's going on. you're multiple organisms evolved together that's why we have intuitions, dreams, imaginations, awareness, dilemmas. Lets try to have unity and control over what's right and wrong and always try to do what's best for humanity and generations to come. Karl is just a simple man but a good man I believe like all of us but can't control selves that's why we care about ourselves so much, my happiness, my pain, my life, my future, that we forget about others who are us as well, like, you are me, we'll go but we'll be here as our kids and their kids we already cloned ourselves through reproduction. Its like same engineers going from being to being and creating this massive being who thinks he is one single entity, but is infact just one big mechanism.
