The Reverend Fergus Butler-Gallie Breaks Down Christianity in TV & Film

Ойын-сауық

The Reverend Fergus Butler-Gallie joins us to break down famous Priests featured in movies and tv shows, including Fleabag, Derry Girls, Rev and The Vicar of Dibley. Order your copy of Touching Cloth here: bit.ly/4162bW3
The very word 'reverend' inspires solemnity. To be a priest is to dedicate one's life to quiet prayer and spiritual contemplation. Isn't it?
Fergus Butler-Gallie reveals what it's like to become a priest in the twenty-first century. Find out why black really is slimming, how to keep a straight face when someone is inadvertently hot-boxing a funeral, and which royal-themed biscuit tin can best contain a very loud personal alarm that no one knows how to switch off. Spot a sweet old lady trying to pay for a taxi with coinage from fascist Spain? Congratulations, shepherd, she's your problem now.
Behind the daily scrapes is an all-too-human love letter to the Church of England, and the amazing variety of people who manage to keep it going, providing a listening ear, company and community at a time when so many people desperately need it, as well as a reflection on what it means to follow a spiritual path amid the chaos of the modern world.

Today I learned that even joining the church doesn't get you out of awful ice-breaking exercises 😔. Really fun video, and very interesting; thank you!

Thank you, Rev. Butler-Gallie and Penguin Books. :) This was fun. I enjoy hearing (reasonably sane) ministers, priests - what have you - talk of their experiences with the laity, as well as depictions of clergy in film and TV (which this was - at least, more so than depictions of Christianity, itself). This was a nice break in the day. :)

As a Catholic, I 100% laughed at "apart from drink". Disagree with my Anglican brethren on a lot of stuff, but we got the drink in common. Interesting he says confessional boxes are odd. I'm 40. I've only once had a confession outside of a confession box. It's absolutely the norm and what I would expect as a catholic. Interesting our Anglican brethren are different. Interesting about the statues too.

Anglicans and protestants in general don’t confess to priests. They confess directly to god. Anglicanism is a bit of a mish mash of protestant and catholic practices so when he says “High Church” he means Anglicans whose practice is closer to Catholicism, “Low Church” would be closer to Puritanism, Quakerism, Calvinism etc. I’ve certainly never seen a confession box in any CoE church or ever heard of an Anglican taking confession.

This is funny, I grew up catholic but never really thought much about the other religious groups. We are all on the same team right?

I think we all have the same general end goal, but different teams think there are different ways to get there

I'm a practicing Catholic and I found it fascinating some of the things he said. Never occured to me people don't generally do confession in confessionals. I'm 40 (catholic 11 years). I've had one confession outside a confessional, and I've had many years I've gone weekly. The statue thing... I figured the Anglicans had statues. Thinking about it, makes sense the low Anglicans not so much (Raised protestant = no statues) but had never clicked. Very interesting. 100% laughed at the drink comment though. Yep. Now I need to go listen to ABBA. It's my Catholic duty. (while I drink my wine)

I’m currently reading your book A Field Guide to the English Clergy which I intend to donate to the Anglican Benedictines in Michigan who belong to the Episcopal Church. With regards to the perennial question of “churchmanship” it really needs to be pointed out that the Church of England, as well as the Episcopal Church USA, are neither Protestant or Roman Catholic but rather Anglican. This may sound kind of literalistic but the Anglicans are definitely neither protestant or catholic. This is why so many Anglicans find it necessary to convert to Catholicism or quite often Methodism, as indeed, if one is Protestant they won’t like the CofE and the same applies to those with truly Catholic leanings. Others of course find it necessary to become Eastern Orthodox or even Buddhist. Lumping all of the protestant churches into one group is misdirected. So also is it misdirected to assign a sort of false Catholicity to Anglicans by calling them Anglo-Catholics.

I don’t think having an English Protestant comment on sectarian issues in NI is particularly useful or responsible.

I’m sure he’s aware that “touching cloth” is a euphemism for a desperate need to void one’s bowels. So maybe I expected this video to be a bit funnier. Not bad anyway, I think the next react video he does will be looser.
