THE RETURN FOR STANNARDS GRAVE Jane River Tasmania
Ойын-сауық
Nine months ago Rob Parsons, Hugh Calvert and myself took a six day expedition into the remote south west of Tasmania in search of the long lost grave of huon piner John Stannard.
In 1901 three men were working along the banks of the Jane river falling hundreds of huon pine trees. The huon pine timber was sought after for it's long lasting quality in the use of boats being shipped all around the world.
Tragically in the same year 1901 the young 19 year old John Stannard slipped and drowned while trying to free a log jam in the river. Because of the remoteness of the area his comrades buried his body on a small knoll (hill) on the banks of the Jane River.
The grave was last seen in 1938 by an explorer named Michael Sharland who was searching for the Tasmanian Tiger (Thylacine) who was at the time close to extinction. He stumbled across the grave in his travels, photographed it and described what he'd seen.
Since this time many have been back into this remote area which is part of the Franklin Gordon National Park but with no success in finding the grave.
October last year Rob, Hugh and myself (Levi Triffitt) tried to find the grave it took six days of the most brutal hiking and conditions that Tasmania has to offer and we left the area unsuccessfully.
This year with new clues, research and a little more information we head back in for a second attempt to see if we can relocate the grave and restore a small piece of Tasmania's early pioneer history.

Oh levi, silly man! I go out in a sea kayak and STILL take a couple of meters of duct tape and self seal silicone tape (just un case!) 🙄😎 That said, fair shout for slogging it out. Nice one 👍💪🤪 (adding as I watch!) Another thing to carry is 2 'rubble bags'. Handy to keep all clothes in rucksack, rubbish or something close to end, to carry out OR, just in case the footware is wrong, grab bags and stick one per leg and dry feet! (Dependent on water depth 🙄🤪😎)

One of your best yet Levi and a very nice homage to an early pioneer piner. Logging has claimed a lot of lives over the years and even today continues to do so. Guys I knew & worked with here in southwest WA forests were taken by falling trees. Frank “Snake” Longbottom the most recent. Thanks for the effort you make and the lengths you go to, to bring us such a close & personal look at wild Tasmania. I never see you have a run in with stinging nettles in the bracken fern thickets? I well remember my first run in with it in the Central Western Tiers, and I also remember unwisely kicking in the front door of a European wasps nest with my size 10 clodhoppers boots. I’ll never make that mistake again. I think I’m probably too old to make it back to Tassie again in this lifetime. It’s really nice to do it vicariously through yourself. 👍👍👍🇦🇺

WOW!! Congrat's guys with this epic journey!! 99.9995% of all viewers would have given up once 5mins in on the video, soaked bogged and worn out. Not Rob & Levi.. when the going get tough the tough-ass Tassies get going!! The actual find is (close to) a miracle, you could have walked 5 meter to the left and missed it in a blink of an eye. great research and teamwork guys. Did I say "WOW EPIC!!!!" yet?! When you guys are old and grey, you will remember this journey and fondly tell the story of the hardship and endurance following the footsteps of the pioneer loggers and poor John Stannard who rests in solitude in a beautiful peaceful spot in the great Tasmanian wilderness!!
Levi, this experience deserves to become a short film or documentary. For Australians and fellow Tasmanians an important reference to a little known early history of those tough Piners. Stannard gave you sunshine the day you found his resting place. Somehow it seemed so right to find and remember him in that remarkable lost world. I could never get to see the country you travelled through, so it’s a rare insight into those ancient rainforests. A special effort here fuelled by passion, tenacity and vision, well done to you both, also, beautifully filmed and edited Levi👍

Thanks so much mate, despite the challenges the day we found him had a certain feel to it with the sun out I never mentioned it but it the sun shining down on the grave in that moment I’ll never forget just a small amount of sunlight shining through on the grave
Bloody amazing Levi, Rob and the guy who was injured. It seemed like Stannard steered Rob to his grave, well I believe in stuff like that. They were very tough men … I know how tough because when I was young I cleared big hardwood trees with an axe to run survey lines… I was very fit and strong. I know also what you guys experienced on finding his grave ….. the hairs stand up on the back of your neck and you get a nervous shiver. As a registered surveyor in the bush, we need to find old reference trees which reference the corners of bush lots. When you find these trees you get very excited because that old surveyor cut into that tree and chiselled the broad arrow and lot number into it about 150 years ago. It’s great to see young guys like you doing things like that and not just sitting in pubs and talking bullshit. Benjamin Franklin said ‘ We’ll done is better than well said’ …. So, well done men !!!!
As I expected, another awesome vid buddy.

Yeh absolutely spot on mate we were talking about how amazing it felt to find it after all the effort etc cheers
Unbelievable how you even found it standing right next to it. Well done.
Wow what a awesome and amazing trip you guys had so glad you found his resting spot.
That looked like a brutal trek mate, what an amazing adventure, you guys must be stoked! Truly brilliant vid as always! 👍 Thanks guys
Saw the coming attractions video and was extremely excited, watched the entire video and felt your pain and frustration but man when you picked up that bottle Levi the hair on my arms stood up and said yes that doesn't belong there. Then Rob called you and bam my adrenaline cranked up, I could see the happiness in your eyes and hear it in your voices. When you were holding that bottle up with the muck in it I said man the only thing more perfect would be if that bottle was sealed and drinkable, and you said you wanted to take a drink of it, perfect. Honestly this needs to be a documentary, everyone should watch it! Coagulations to Rob and you for all of your hard work, thanks for sharing a piece of Tasmania's history with us, it was so worth watching!

Thanks mate glad you enjoyed yes the celebratory sip would have been great but so stoked how it all came about certainly a trip to remember
Great job Levi and Rob a extremely tenacious effort. Have done some hiking back in the day as a scout leader but nothing like that. A well earned reward. Inspired to get back out there.

That was so amazing thank you for sharing.
Amazing to see all the hard work pay off. Not just the physical getting there, but also the research involved that went into learning about these remote pioneers. Great stuff.
