The Replacements - Bastards of Young | Reaction!

Музыка

It's always a treat to come back to the mighty Replacements. This is a defiant anthem for the youth. The band seems to always achieve at being relatable. Paul Westerberg sounds powerful, aggressive, and fed up!
Thanks for watching!

Ah, revisiting the Replacements at last!! You're right about Westerberg's singing - he doesn't always hit the notes or annunciate perfectly but his voice is a rough-hewn, authentic thing of beauty. Yes, the pitch is a bit sped up on the video - most of the 2023 remixes of the "Tim" album songs sound much better than original mixes - but it's still a treat to watch your reaction. Recommend another Replacements' anthem ("Left of the Dial", "I Will Dare" , "Alex Chilton"), punk song ("Customer", "Shiftless when Idle", "Takin' a Ride", "Color Me Impressed"), gorgeous ballad ("Skyway", "Sadly Beautiful", "Within Your Reach", "Here Comes a Regular", "Run for the Country") or live train wreck (their "Hey Good Lookin'" cover), next and soon!!

We used to blast this so often... cruising down the highway, a bunch of friends singing. "The ones who love us best are the ones we'll lay to rest.. visit their graves on holidays at best. The ones who love us least are the ones we'll die to please... if it's any consolation, I don't begin to understand..." Such great lyrics, such a great band! And that bit at the end: "Take it it's yours, take it it's yours, take it it's yours". Hard, direct, urgent, cynical but empathetic. This is a serious GenX youth anthem.

a band that you can keep going back too, lots of great songs. I'm surprised you have the self control not to just binge their whole catalogue immediately 🤣

There is no end of greats Mats songs. Next? Alex Chilton, I’ll Be You, Swinging Party, Left of the Dial, Someone Take the Wheel, Nobody. You should also hit Paul’s solo material. Great stuff.

Left of the Dial, Waitress in the Sky, and Here comes a Regular all great Replacements songs. In the film Heather's, The school is called Westerberg High because of Paul W.

The album this comes from, TIM, was their major label debut, and they were contractually obligated to make videos for the singles. They didn't like videos (they have a great song about this on Let It Be) - a lot of '80s rockers found videos inauthentic, too much focus on image over art. Anyway ... because they had to do a video, they did this ... basically an anti-video. (Fits the belligerent tone of the song you describe.)

One of my all time fave tracks by The Replacements. When you circle back…might I beg of you to take a listen to “Can’t Hardly Wait”. It’s truly them at their finest hour. “Pleased to Meet Me” is the album that truly won me over. Alex Chilton. Valentine. The Ledge. Skyway. Classics. Also, “Here Comes A Regular” is a soulful ballad that speaks volumes. Cheers, boo

So glad you finally reacted to another great Replacements song! For a band you've enjoyed so much you seem to really space these out! BTW, the very end of the song with the repeating drum loop and "take it it's yours, take it it's yours" was created by the producer, Tommy Ramone, when they put the album together, and the band tried to replicate it live afterward. I would recommend "I Will Dare" or "Androgynous" next!

Paul sounds like a kid. Laughed when reading Trouble Boys, Paul had forgotten the lyric is "wait on the sons of no one". Makes me feel better about getting their lyrics wrong at times. He also talks about "income tax deduction / one hell of a function". Being born on December 31 and his family seeming more happy about that.

Back in the day, R.E.M. would say things like "what you hear is more important than what we wrote", and the Mats had their own boozy version of the same sentiment, "we don't care what we wrote"... seriously though, the misheard lyrics are the best ones, like "arm in arm/on and on" in Left of the Dial, "keep it short/take it it's yours" in Bastards of Young, "seagull flies in the lonesome" in Can't Hardly Wait. Tommy's bass in this track is just so good, though.
