World Chess Champion Ding Liren returns for the 86th edition of the Tata Steel Masters, a 14-player single round-robin taking place from 13-28 January in Wijk aan Zee, the Netherlands.
The time control is 100 minutes for 40 moves, followed by 50 minutes for the rest of the game, with a 30-second increment per move from move 1. A tie for first place will be decided by two blitz (3+2) games. If still tied, the players keep playing single "sudden death" games where White gets 2.5 minutes and Black 3 minutes until one side wins. The monetary prizes will be shared evenly. Actually in order to reach the same position 3 times, it must be made possible by repeating the same moves right? So I still don't understand the position can be reached without repeating the moves. If that is the case, there will be a break in 3 consecutive repeats. Can someone explain

The rule is a bit more complicated: Positions are considered the same if(1) the same player has the move,(2) pieces of the same kind and color occupy the same squares, and(3) the possible moves of all the pieces are the same.

This means it is not a draw if two times it was White to move and the third time it is Black. Or if the first two times casteling was possible and the third time not because the king has moved. These exact rules are often overlooked.

For anyone wondering. Threefold repetition is "Screenshot" repetition. If you see the exact screenshot 3 times then the game is draw. It doesnt matter what moves inbetween. It doesnt matter if its repeated at move 40-41-42 or 40-47-57. This is very common in end game

@@monolithhcr2980Positions are considered the same if (1) the same player has the move, (2) pieces of the same kind and color occupy the same squares, and (3) the possible moves of all the pieces are the same. Under (3) above, positions are not considered to be the same if: (a) in the first position, a pawn could have been captured en passant (by the en passant rule, in the subsequent positions, the pawn cannot be captured en passant anymore), or (b) either player has lost a right to castle, i.e. either king or one of the rooks has been moved, in between repetitions of the position. This is from Wikipedia. So, no if the pieces have different move set available to them, it's not considered a draw.

Praggnanandhah always wins even if he doesn't. I think gukesh had no forced mate and with little time he focused too much on the finish which wasnt so clear which allowed for a draw like this to happen especially with time running low. Its war on the board every time with these guys.

No, Prag was lucky cuz the game was done, all Gukesh had to do was make any move other than the repetition and he would've entered time control with that being the 40th move. Then he'd have an additional 50 mins and the position is easy to calculate with that much time.

it happens quite often actually in pawnless endgames like Q vs R ( happened in Karjakin vs Carlsen game, but Carlsen did not stop the clock, he probably was not sure about it and lost ), R+B vs R endgames etc. It does not have to be 3 times in a row, but when same position repeats after 46th move, after 53rd move and after 59th move, you can claim the draw. In classical you can check from scoresheet, but in rapid / blitz you just have to rely on your memory to stop the clock and call arbiter ( assuming you have DGT boards and arbiter computer recorded moves )

When Magnus is not participating in a tournament, others go all in. Crazy lines, no draws,... So on one hand, we can admire Magnus, but on the other hand, his opponents are playing crazy, interesting chess if he's not playing in the same tournament.

I always like watching Gukesh's games because he plays normal openings that I, amateur, would play, and not some crazy elite-GM-level shit that is all theory until move 35.

2769 is also the rating for Nepo, so I think it's a mistake.

position repeated itself not that moves were repeated = you‘ll enjoy déjà vu 2x times. Incredible calculation with less than 3minutes clock time.

took me 2-3 minutes after having my sani (sandwich) and enjoying a choc chip croissant. Sani recipe will remain undisclosed yet I feel too many secrets never helped anyone and so I will admit one ingredient Branson's Pickles. Lets see how the game ended up now.... Sad, I feel sad, for the queens of old: the rooks, i don't think i have seen the rooks happier in a game, for a long time. Still he did once, he can and will do it again. Thomas Crown award for Gukesh. Pragg the Slippery title for Pragg although he really gets the Kipling award too as in "If you can keep your head..." Can't watch anymore, still sad. ... Ok, so many hours later, still sad but able to watch the rest. Well done Alireza, then again Nepo is everyone's favorite to beat as Nepo finds most of today's high end players boring. I would even wager on Alirezas move that drew Nepos contempt, but I think that's enough for one day. PS: whatever you doing Lana, keep on doing it
