The Reconquista - Part 6 History of Aragon

The Reconquista of the Iberian Peninsula continues with the Kingdom of Aragon. The Medieval fight between the Christians and the Muslim States of Al Andalus goes back and forth. The Almoravids and the Almohads of North Africa arrive to hold the line. But eventually, in the light of the Crusades and the crusading era, the Christians unite and take the offensive.

    Well lovely viewers, this is the last part of Episode IX! Hope you have enjoyed the early Reconquista - I'm researching the next episode now. Please do me a favor, this has been a month of work for me to produce, if you liked it - please share on social media and spread word about the video podcast. I'm am curious if anyone would want me to compile all the parts of Episode IX into one video. It would be an hour long! Btw, I made a mistake in the intro - spelled Siege wrong. Apologies on that - I chalk it up to being a new sleep deprived father. Until the next video, all the best!!

The Navarra kingdom troops were critical in the offensive and reaches the Saracen leadership destroying it. After this battle nothing’s was the same in Spain and Europe. You mention that Alfonso I of Aragon defeated the armies of his wife, Urraca twice, but you fail to mention that she counterattacked him and defeated his armies. At one point, she managed to seize back all the lands she lost. The reason why Alfonso was able to keep a large chunk of Urraca's lands was because rebellious townspeople turned over their towns to him. Urraca was a fascinating warrior queen who led her troops in battle, a rarity for a medieval queen. She managed to keep her throne and most of her realms despite being attacked by the forces of Alfonso, her sister Teresa of Portugal, the Moors, rebellious nobles, and townspeople. When she died in 1126, her son Alfonso became king and he drove Alfonso of Aragon out of Castile entirely.

    Excellent video, as usual. No doubt the battle of las Navas de Tolosa was the most decissive battle in the entire Reconquista age, after the two main initial engagements at Guadalete and Covadonga. It would be worth to mention the participation of the Three Kings in the battle: King of Castile, King of Navarre and King of Aragón, in contrast to the mere participation of groups of knights from the kingdoms of León and Portugal, since the climax of the battle came with the "Three Kings Charge" straight to the centre of the Almohad line, smashing it and reaching the very Almohad camp.

    El Batallador in spanish is just someone who has participated in many battles/fights in spanish batalla means either fight or battle with the suffix ador being added to word as a title given to someone like matador either means murderer or bull fighter but matar means just to kill. I think it would've been more accurate to have called him Alfonso the warrior instead of Alfonso the Battler because that word isn't really used often in english and sounds awkward but that's just a minor detail. Also in spanish the double l is sort of like a y, so a word like llegue is pronounced yegeh (forgive me if it sounds awkward spanish has quite a few sounds not used in english) and in castilian spanish the c and z sound (in some words not all words) is more like a th sound, so zapato would be pronounced thapato. Other than that great video!

    It was hard for me to say some of these words - as your right the sounds are not that common in English. With words that I wasn’t familiar with I’d look them up on websites that would pronounce them for you. Still if your not a native speaker I can see them coming across differently. My wife is actually Latina from Los Angeles and used her help as well. But Spanish from Spain is still different. I tried to use the lisp as you had mentioned with Zapato, in prior videos, but some of your countrymen mentioned it was off. Guess I’m just going to have to travel to Spain again and live there for a bit again ;)

    @@zetaprime222 Of course. I do not deny that "battler" sounds weird in English. On the other hand, "batallador" is neither a usual word in Spanish. Plus, the solution you propose "fighter" has a wider meaning in English, it is not so specifically referred to the kind of clash we normally define as battle. Obviously this kind of problems always arise when comes to translate from one language to the other. Fortunately in the case of these words we have a clear, neat, table of translations: Guerra - War Batalla - Battle Lucha - Fight Guerrero - Warrior Luchador - Fighter Batallador - Battler??? Yeah, why not? haha :)

    From what I’ve come across in my research, the term is what the Arabs and Berbers called the land of the Vandals - “ al-Vandal-us “ . I guess when a conquering force takes over they can slur the name a bit. For example when the Turks took Constantinople - many people think they changed the name to Istanbul, but it’s actually a slurred Greek term - ‘ is stan poli’ - ‘in the city’. As for al-Andalus, there are competing theories that the name is also from a Roman derivation as well.

At the time, Even Castille was multilingual as Astur Liones and Galician and basque were spoken by a lot of its population. Aragon courts were mainly bilingual, with Aragonese and Catalan being spoken, this is a documented fact, not some pseudolinguistic theories. Did Christians refer to Spain as "Spain" at the time? What do the names Iberia and Hispania designate at that time?

  • @FlashPointHx

    @FlashPointHx

    5 жыл бұрын

    So let’s take this chronogically. Iberia comes from the Greek ‘Iberes’ - which is what they called the Celtic tribes in the area who inhabited the area around the river Ebro. Likely when the Greeks established colonies. Later this was latinized into Hiberia and then Iberia. Hispania was the Roman name for the province. They got this from the Carthaginians who had previously owned it and some say it comes from the old name for the city of Seville - Hispalis. This is of course where the modern name that Spaniards call their country comes from - ‘Espana’. As for calling it “Spain “, I think this was what others called them especially the French in the Gascony region and later the English. Most of the vernacular that was used at the time was in Latin and hence they use the term Hispania after the Romans. Later when Spanishbecame the norm they would use Espana. I did come across several references to the kings who would refer to themselves as king of Spain or king of the Spains.

    They are portuguese, leonese, catilan, basques, etc, but all them are from Hispânia. In fact, when lather the Castilla and aragan join and conquer granada, they put the name Spain and the portuguese dont forgive him, because in that time the portuguese considere themeselfs Spanish. Have course the people of Spain are Spanish and the Portugal portuguêses and now a union between the two contries is called iberic union, because the Spain is a name of the portugueses enimy and the term iberic is more polítical correct, but is the same Hispânia or Ibéria

    Depends on the time period. Portugal was a part of Asturias and then later Leon and then later Leon-Castile. After she would fain her independence she became extremely protective of her own identity. We never know. the fact is that the reconquista as a sucesse and Portugal as the same dna that the Spain, and on language and culture Portugal and Galícia are brothers. I dont sink that a iberic country is posible in the moment. In the past there where in 1580 to 1640 , but for Portugal only Filipe 2 is good. The other kings dont and Portugal has ataqued by the enimies of Spain, that are to numerous. Só Portugal have very bad memories of be part of Spain. In the moment Spain need a King . Its a union of the nacions of Spain, só if Portugal became part of Spain the King must be in the trone, if not is a juguslavia 2.

Her father, King Ramiro abdicated the throne to her when she was just two years old shortly after arranging her marriage to the Count of Barcelona. The count ruled in her name as prince consort until his death in August 6, 1162. When he died, his son by Petronila, Alfonso II, became count of Barcelona as a child and under the rule of a regency. Petronila took control of Aragon for nearly two years until she abdicated on June 18, 1164. Alfonso didn't became king until after his mother's abdication. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Petronilla_of_Aragon
