The Reasons Why I'm Switching My Photo Editing Software: Adobe Lightroom vs. Capture One

Is it time to switch away from Adobe Lightroom? Over the past year, I've been trying Capture One as an alternative to Lightroom for my Photo Editing. In this video, I talk about 5 reasons I'm making the switch and 5 things I miss about Adobe.

As a fujifilm shooter I also tried out Capture One for a year. I loved the Sessions options. How neatly everything was organized. I also loved that my 'recipes' would stay linked to my photos whereas in LR it would only give the option for the film simulation. That really took away a lot for me. I also like that if you still need to use PS for any reason, you can click to edit in PS as you would LR. Currently I still use both - LR for weddings.. C1 for everything else. But I am looking forward to being able to do all in C1.

After 5 years with Adobe Lightroom I switched to Capture One (December 2020) and most definitely won't be switching back. I am 100% a Nikon user and the annual subscription for the Nikon only version of C1 is less than the combined 12 month subs for the Adobe Suite. I have been impressed by the panorama stitching facility in C1-22. I have compared it against the same files in Lightroom and found the C1 version to be quicker and either given identical or better results. I also like the customisable user interface in C1 which is so much more flexible than Camera RAW or Lightroom. I do very little HDR work but I have tried a few files in both LR and C1-22. Once I had learned hoe to get the best from the C1 version I got better results than I had in LR. All round C1 is the better solution. I agree with your comments that there are many more tutorials out there on LR than for C1, however, quantity doesn't mean quality and I have found the quality of the Capture One sessions on KZread to be superb, particularly those by Paul Reiffer and David Grover.

Also for anyone thinking about buying Capture One, they often have discounts. I think I bought my license at 40% off.

Thanks for this video. I've been straddling Lightroom and C1 for almost 3 years, and while I prefer C1, I've been using Lightroom since v.2 (and Photoshop much longer) and have trouble letting go, even thought I probably should. One thing that annoys me is that the Adobe CC app sits in the background on your computer, and that Lightroom is a tremendous resource hog. You mentioned that you prefer Lightroom's implementation of presets, but the fact that C1 allows you to put a style on it's own layer (with opacity control) adds a lot more flexibility, IMO. And while C1 is certainly expensive initially (too expensive), after that you can just purchase the new version every year - IF you choose - and at a discount if you buy it early. But the one thing that keeps me using C1 most of all is that I like the look of my images better - I've done a lot of comparing, and I consistently see more detail/resolution in C1 RAW development, and it's not just sharpness or contrast - I cannot duplicate that look in Lightroom by moving sliders, changing profiles, or any other way. I'm convinced that C1 extracts more information from the RAW file (or does more with it) and it shows in the image.

I'm going to have to revisit C1 once the pano and HDR tools come out. Those were big 'gotchas' for me. I loved the toolset otherwise. When I revisit C1 I will also have to get more comfortable with their catalog. That's probably the hardest thing to walk away from LR with.

Very good video, thanks for the discussion! I personally use Capture One Subscription for Fuji since I own an X-T4. C1 definitely works better with Fuji cameras. I use Lightroom for all my other cameras. LR's new update for masking I think makes it slightly better than C1 at this point in time. Essentially, it gives layer capability to LR and I love the new sky and subject select tools. Whether I use C1 or LR, I usually take my better images into Photoshop where I fine tune them with Tony Kuyper's TK 8 panels. The TK Panels are fantastic tools for luminosity masking and much more. I couldn't recommend that more highly.

I own Capture One 12 and used it for quite a while. There was a lot to like about it, but the downside to me was how it managed metadata. Keywording and descriptions are crucial to me, and there are too many things about their metadata panels that I didn't like. Great video though, I'm always looking to bail on Adobe.

I made the move to C1 about a year ago and haven’t looked back. Having layers and the incredible flexibility with color editing without having to move into photoshop has been such a blessing. At first I definitely missed LR presets, but once I learned how to create and use styles, it really liberated me from the whole LR preset culture that surrounds LR and forced me to develop my own style. While I wish some plugins were/were better supported, I’ve found denoise to be the main one I used the most in workflows. I subsequently opted for DxO PureRaw as the start of my workflow so i generally cull > dxo pureraw for prime denoise + optical corrections > capture one to edit. Overall, I’m super happy with my decision, and I get the results I want which is all that really matters. Use the tool that works best in your hands.

I made the switch 4 years ago. As well as the reasons you mentioned the fact that the UI is fully customisable is a huge advantage. The tools and where they are located determined by me rather than Adobe 😀 Unfortunately, we have to spend a long time in our photo editors UI. Styles are pretty flexible, they can be added, applied to layers etc, I don't see a big downside compared to LR. Style brushes give convenient quick access to eg dodging, burning etc or whatever you want if you create your own. Whilst the Magic Brush makes selections really easy and fast. Using the Magic Brush to select the colours in the original image makes working on a B&W really intuitive. So C1 for me, the increase in cost is worth it.

I've been using capture one since 2015. I haven't used lightroom once. Although I think it's better to not do any sharpening in capture one because it adds a strange darkness and unattractive contrast, which does not happen if you change the sharpening and texture in camera raw.

One thing that was not mentionned : there is a free version of C1, of course stripped down, without most of the fancy options of Capture One, but this way you can try it, no charge. And, if you're like me (shooting Fuji so jpegs mostly and having to process only a few raws a month) you may not need more than this ! To be fair, the free version of Capture One is so different of the normal one that it feels like a different software... But it has its advantages as it is very easy to understand and work with.

I still have a lot to learn with CPO but I find my workflow to be a bit better than with LR now that I understand it more. There is a learning curve but it's extremely customizable. Some of the benefits you mentioned, like the Catalog vs Sessions, can be confusing early on for a lot of people. Personally, I thought the clone/heal tool was a bit better in LR but far from a deal-breaker. There are some other cool tools they have in the pipes too, I want to try like CPO Live beta! LR needs to be rebuilt from the ground up personally because it's still soooo slow even on strong machines.

When I finally started shooting raw I tried LR/PS and was overwhelmed. It might be a great product but I didn't "get it". I tried C1 and was off & rolling quickly. Being a fairly new program I think the tutorials you find online for C1 are more useful. Look for help with LR and you are wading through a decade of cr*p before you find the video that actually helps you. C1 & their ambassadors put together some really great tutorials that are easy for newbies to follow. But then that's my .02 :-) Yes, C1 is more expensive but it works for me, they are always updating features and they listen to their user base.

Thanks for your comparison. I'm a capture pro 21 user because I switched camera's during all the years so I have Canon, Fuji and Nikon files. So that leaves the Pro version as the only solution because I want to be able to open all of them. What I don't like is there upgrade strategy. They offered a 20% discount for an upgrade without telling exactly what to get. Yes, they would offer HDR and Panorama but if those features work as they should, we only know when the upgrade is there. Second, it's a bit disappointing that they don't offer focus stacking as well. That would be interesting for me as a (hobby) landscape shooter. Do you have experience with the combination Affinity Photo + Capture One to solve the missing HDR, Panorama and Focus stacking features?

Absolutely. I switched to C1 last year as well and it’s fine. I was using LR since v2, and have built up a strong muscle memory with it. Being turned off by the subscription model, C1 was different for me, but not bad. The more time spent with C1, the more I learned and found some great workflows. I do miss the auto straightening tool from LR… for me that’s a big hole in C1. Other that that, C1 has been great, the speed edit UI is something that’ll keep me using it for a very long time.

Capture One has had "super resolution" since C1 3 it is in the output panel, all you have to do is double the pixels and C1 interpolates the image. I have been doing this since 2007 on my first 22mp digital back and now on my 50mp digital back (no need to upgrade to a 100mp back), as long as you double pixels it creates a beautiful images.

At this point I forced to consider going to Lightroom for performance reasons, which is super frustrating.

I always find my way back to Photoshop and lightroom. Tried Capture one and ON plus etc but usually the features that lure you to one of those programs will get 'adopted' by photoshop a few updates later. If you don't really edit a lot in Photoshop, Capture one would probably the better option compared to Lightroom but then again it's more expensive. Personally I'll stick with Adobe.

I really liked how editing goes in C1, however Lightroom already adopted some of it's features (like layers) and in Lightroom+Photoshop bundle have much, much more features. Also you can easily edit photos and RAW's on your phone without any additional price. All for half or even less the price of C1.

Since you mentioned workflow, LR has a tablet version which works pretty well and speeds-up your work when you are shooting not at home. And not to mention the 1TB cloud space if you choose the right Adobe bundle. All this makes Capture One in its current version over LR incredible more expensive.

The biggest problem I have with switching between different editing tools is that none is able to read the edits from the other one. So if you have a big catalog and want to switch to a different tool then you cannot take over or convert your edits (only very few) to the new tools. So if you are going back to pictures you edited some time ago and want to modify some of your edits then it is not possible with a different tool. So if you used LR in 2020 and C1 in 2021 then you cannot re-edit your photos from 2020 because you are not having the subscription any longer. Instead you need to start from scratch in your new tool.

Hi: I purchased the C1Pro perpetual license version, but I also continue to use LR Classic. I reluctantly had to move over to LR when Apple discontinued Apple Aperture. C1 has a similar feel to Aperture and the user experience is much better particularly when you can customize the workspace. I am a Sony shooter but I have files from Canon, Nikon and Olympus so I need to cover all of my bases. I really enjoy being able to edit via layers within C1. My only negative is that based on my experience C1 doesn't seem to be able to handle large catalogues of images. I have over 250,000 images and I have heard that the max for C1 is around 25,000 before it can't handle them properly. Is that your experience? Overall, I like C1 and don't regret using it. Cheers, Keith

I have not used Capture One, have only used Lightroom as my main catalog/editing software. I have tried many add-ons for sharpening, noise, keywording but have always stayed with LR because of the catalog. I now have 1 million plus pictures (12 years) in the catalog and can search it quite easily for old photos. It seems like it would be a major hassle to move that catalog to something else, but at some point I'm sure I'll reach a limit in LR and then maybe I'll look at other options. Most of what I shoot is sports, so I'm not as worried about all the features of Photoshop (or a similar tool) in LR. There is a small subset of pictures that I spend a lot of time/energy on with layers, masks, etc.

But my next thought was: "How the heck am I going to learn how to do the things he mentioned in this video?" Do you have a Capture One tutorial that covers how you do the 5 things you mentioned here? I switched to C1 a year ago, after 5 years with Lightroom. I never thought I would use C1 other than tether shooting, the interface and clipboard always seem too complicated to use, however, everything changed after I purchased the M1 Macbookpro, the 8GB RAM in my MBP can not handle Lightroom, at all. The SWAP memory usage went CEAZY!!! Applying any adjustment became laggy, export right after editing takes forever and I had to relaunch the program every time to clear SWAP when I need to export multiple images. Finally, I had enough and went full C1 workflow, struggling at the beginning cause I'm so used to lightroom interface but after a few weeks, I never went back, my workflow needs to shoot and process hundreds of images every day, C1 is so much faster than lightroom, yes sometimes it takes few more clicks to do some same thing but it can do SOOOOOO much more. I don't have many complaints about C1, they removed the output panel once, that period of time is really painful to me, but thank god they brought it back, and perhaps batch converts RAW to DNG in the catalog? will be fantastic.
