Journey to Leica Q3 I was a fairly early adopter of the Fuji X100 series (2013) as my EDC. Also, longtime Nikon shooter (D100, D300, D700, Z6II, Z9, Z8) as the workhorse/duty camera yet my everyday camera was the X100S then X100F then X100V until moving to Nikon mirrorless 2021. Tried several options with Nikon Z6II to make it the EDC, short primes, pancake lens, small telescopes but no option worked as well as the X100V. Bear in mind, the X100V had some annoying limitations, which is why I moved to mirrorless to address (auto focus and manual controls were chief among these). Since 2019, I have watch both the Leica M and Q series reviews and experiences. A dear friend and fellow professional photographer is a life long Leica shooter(mainly film) and has encouraged me to jump onboard for decades. So after the Q3 announced, I pre-ordered and am awaiting the experience. The 60MP allows good flexibility to crop/compose even with the wide 28MM lens (which, by all accounts, is excellent). The ergonomics are not as preferred but the manual controls allow fast changes and feel great. I am hopeful the Q3 tradeoffs and workflow will fit my desired use case. Hi Gaston, thanks for the video, one question is will you be selling the Q2 or keeping it? When you get the Q3 does that make your Q2 redundant? I haven’t pressed buy on the Q3 as yet (like you cameras are my vice). I’ve had my Q2 for a couple of years and love it but not sure on the potential loss on selling my Q2 and accessories. Currently between £2500-£3000 in the UK for camera. Love to hear your perspective.

Most likely I will sell it. Don’t see the need of having a slower AF , non tilt screen with worse video codecs, worse dynamic range. :) but you never know. I hoard cameras. 😂

60mp Triple resolution, Awesome new EVF, 8k......I just ordered my Q3 last week, but its not scheduled to come in for months🤧

I have the A7R5 ...LOVE it but somedays i wish i had something smaller and lighter...after handling the Q3 and taking some sample shots at the store yesterday i preordered it

Yeah man. That was my story. I have the Q2 and wish it was everything the Q3 is. However I ended up appreciating the Q2 very much because when I go out with that camera I get in a completely different zone than when shooting with my Sony’s. The Q3 will be a very popular camera and convert people that dislike it (like I did in the past!) addicting cameras and the fact that they don’t have 20 releases a year makes the purchase much easier to stomach. When you factor in that you have a 28mm Summilux that cost $8k (the f1.4 though) and you can get the camera Body, the lens plus 4k 60-8K 30 10 Bit 4:2:2 for 6k, it’s not that bad.

I shoot with a FUJI X-PRO3 and LOVE IT, i also own an M6, My next leica will be the Q3.

I'm curious if by the time the Leica Q3 stock catches up to demand, the a7c ii will be announced and if that a7c ii appeals more as a hybrid. maybe with a 35mm f2.8, 35mm f1.8 or 28mm f2 paired with it. Esp if it maintains good ibis as opposed to the Q3's ois for video

Meanwhile I continue to enjoy my Q2. I’m really happy with the A7C. I don’t see a reason to upgrade. But 10 but 60 would be good. But if 12mp of the ZVE1 heats up the camera. Imagine with a 33MP. That’s why I think this camera will have the same 14MP sensor or a new 24mp. One of my sources from Asia sent me that info a few months ago. I think he is right. Don’t need more MP and heat. I prefer better low light and better video specs.

@@GastonShutters Ohh that'd be cool if it was 24mp. Yeah, if the zv e1 overheat issues are that bad, then 33mp could be worse unless they also do the aps-c crop for 4k 60p (like a7iv) to mitigate the heat somehow if possible. I'm fine with anything over 20MP and has 4k 60p (prefer no crop), some stabilization, and a low profile body. Hence the Leica Q3 fits that, but super expensive. If the rumored a7cii comes out with those specs that I'm looking for, it'd be a tough choice since the pricing would be way more affordable I'd say, plus the stabilization may be better since the Q3 stabilization doesn't seem to cut it for video. Maybe better autofocus in a7cii too. Darn, if only the a7cii was released/announced already lol

I recorded the video using FX3, Nanlite Forza 60 as Key. Zhiyun Molus 100 as rim light and another one at 1% of power for my negative fill on the left. Background is one Nanlite Color Tube.

It comes with a lenshood that prevents that. You can always put a UV filter too.

I don't agree about the flip out screen. I understand that youtubers want video, and really want to see themselves when filming, but I don't think Leica is ever trying to be a company focused on video. I actually wish they made a version with no video capabilities at all (or any camera manufacturer for that matter... I would love a Sony A7R series that had no video also). The more you make a camera a jack of all trades.... it becomes a master of none. Where the Q3 stands now... its kind-of the master of street photography / casual photography (except the lack of back button AF).

The Q3 doesn’t have a flip out just tilt to be able to shoot from the waist down. Or head above. I think this a great feature for street photography as you can be more discrete when shooting people. I’d love for Sony to re release the Rx1 with some insane specs and the NPFZ 100. 35 or 50 mm f1.8 lens. And it’s Inter it’s le that such camera is coming due to the success of the Leica Q series.

Funny you found heavy, I got to try one in the shop while waiting to get mine and surprised how light it was, maybe shooting eventually with it for hours will change my mind. But the ergometrics is bad, look good but I probably get the thumb rest and the grip: Putting them on was like realizing you had been banging your head against the wall :) With those on it is great to handle. So it is really a 6500 dollar cam 🤣

The Q3 is slightly heavier. But I think the weight issue is because I don’t rig my cameras. But I will get the grip plate for Leica. That should do the job. I would. Like this camera to have 33MP or so and have faster readout/ low light performance and a Mic Jack! But maybe in 4 years with the Leica Q4 😂

If you were looking for a 6500 cam, look sideways. Sony did offer the 6500 for a good while, but I think new ones are off the market. However, if u really search, am certain you'll be full of gratitude and joy when u locate the Sony version. Smaller & lighter, little cheaper. However, it is truly a 6500 cam. Good luck! 😎😎

I have the A1 coat me about that. I use it mainly for studio work for the high res and features. Don’t need the latest AF for studio work or flip out screen so the A1 still my studio workhorse.

Debating the zv-e1, a1 and a7r5. When you get the q3 I need you test the 8k/30 4.2.2 10bit, and 8bit if they have it. I also need you to test the mic jack/audio performance. Lastly if there is a crop mode/clear image zoom capability in video, I need you to test that. My current set up is an a7c 24G, 50/1.2 and 24240 and this q3 is real close to replacing all of that except the telefoto end... and I have always wanted a Q so now may be the time to get one provided the 8k can run for 30 minutes...

The Leica Q3 doesn’t have mic input but it does have USBC and there’s is a word around that they may introduce mic input via USBC via firmware. Can’t verified that statement yet. New y’all posted. Subscribe if you haven’t so you know when that video drops.

Leica M11 freezes up and have to remove battery now Q3 has the same problem. Why is this? 😢

I have an M11 and did not experience that issue. I read that some people experiencing the issue is because Ruhr use slower SD cards? Have you updated to the latest firmware?

I tried the X100V, I tried the Q2, sorry both cameras are having a very poor AF. For street I am now using a Sony A7C irh the Tamron 20-40/2.8, by far the best cam for this purpose. Excellent AF, good HighISO, relativly small combo and a reasonable price.

A7C is a monster in every street photography sense. I use it with the 24 and 40 mm f2.5 tiny lenses

Best camera of the leica system to be discreet, fast and compact. Not light but it is robust so rain ir shine it is the camera i dont have to baby so much. I find myself using the q3 80% of the time during my travel so far and less of the M/SL unless other focal lengths or i wish to take various other type of shots that require a bit more time or look or being quiet isnt needed

Tengo la Leica desde 3 semanas y tiene ya mas de 1000 disparos y no e grabado video de momento , la verdad esto es otra forma y el 28 mm te lleva a otro mundo y te enseña a ver la otra imagen , es un placer disparar con la Q3 se siente que habla con cada disparo , es muy cara pero cuando la tienes te parece barata .

I own the Q2 and the improvements on the Q3 is what the Q2 needs. In the end it’s my conclusion after owning the Q2 and I can see how the short coming on the Q2 makes others think similarly. Thanks for stopping by.

The fact that I could buy several Sony cameras for the price of that one Leica........the Leica better give me insight into another dimension for that price.

Good review, sir. Please, I want to tell you frantically that Fujifilm xs20 is way better to this camera, in my opinion, not to talk of Sony a7iv. I can't buy it for $2000.

I would go with Q2. Used ones in like new condition are selling for 40% less than Q3. Save money and take a vacation. Q3 does not offer that much more to justify the steep price.

@@GastonShutters I really want to buy one for street photography instead of carrying noticeable gear but I am not sure if it is the right one for me, or is the price justifiable, and I might add to that price to get a better camera that I really want like the Hasselblad X2D 100C, I mean I hope after watching a lot of reviews on it a Leica Q4 comes to the market not necessarily with new features but much more with improvements to what is available and this would a great thing to be honest.

You’ll be happy with it for street. In fact I happen to use more zone focus with it. Manual focus and setting the distance scale instead of letting the camera think on what to focus on

On ne peux pas comparer un Leica avec un Sony ce n’est pas du tout la même philosophie. L’autofofocus s’est amélioré et est largement suffisant. De plus sans la mollette APSM et les réglages sur les bagues tout est plus simple même pour travailler en manuel en hyperfocale et le bouton sur la bague de mise au point est un must. La vidéo? Aucun intérêt on n’achète pas un Leica pour faire de vidéos sauf en dépannage et encore vaut mieux dans ce cas là prendre son IPhone. Le prix ? Un Sony avec 1 ou 2 objectifs est déjà plus cher, de plus au prix des objectifs Leica seuls, le Boîtier du Q3 est gratuit. Les objectifs Leica sont supérieurs à Sony . Merci beaucoup pour cette vidéo.

I detest articulating screens , i hate video , Surprise surprise a 28mm is not the normal portrait lens, good luck with your crappy sony cameras and Q 3 i wish you well ,i will just stick with my Q2 as its fantastic.....Less is more in my view keep your sony,olympus ,canon etc etc i will stick with my Q2

Whoa! You're making a lot of excuses for a $6000 camera. You can slow down with any current mirrorless by going fully manual without all the grief of a fixed wide angle lens and bad ergos. I have owned a Q2 and I don't think the Q2 or 3 comes close to an A7C, much less the A7RV, and let's face it, the 60mp is probably coming from Sony anyway. The Leica system is very constrictive for such a large outlay.
