The hidden cost of owning a Leica Q2 that others won't tell you about.

Here are my thoughts on the recent hype surrounding the Leica Q2.

I'm sorry to say this, I don't know who you have been looking at for reviews, but most reviewers DO mention how expensive this camera and all of the accessories are! Especially the accessories! Some mention that buying the Q2 is "cheap" because buying the M-mount summilux 28mm f1.4 costs more than this setup as a whole. (Doesn't mean 6000 dollars is cheap, but it is a steal if one can afford those prices) Many do complain or at least mention for example the cost of an extra battery and the thumbgrip. Believe me, I have been looking extensiveley at reviews because I'm contemplating buying into Leica Q or even M, even so far that I am looking at reviews from creators in different languages other than English and Dutch, meaning I've gone through most of the english speaking reviewers. That being said anyone mentioning the extra cost of going into this system is welcome :) So thank you for you insights. :) I would advice you to try and find more reviewers on the matter.

Jose, not sure if the title was for click bait or not, but it is misleading to say 'hidden costs.' To me, unknown or hidden costs come into play with something like buying a film camera and not being aware of how much film is or the cost of processing these days, or an item is sold but then 2-3 other things HAVE to be purchased to make it work properly. A luxury top brand camera case and full premium brand strap were not "required" when you bought the camera and you chose those know full well there are other less expensive options available that do the trick. Or chose not to buy a case - I have both the M11 and the Q2 and don't use a case on either of them, and, they give you a FREE strap but you didn't like that one. Bottom line, I got the Q2 and didn't spend a time more than that and I'm having a great time with it. No hidden costs and no one tricked me. And lastly, I've seen a number of Q2 videos and every one I've seen says these are premium cameras and that many many more quality cameras are less, but it is a great camera and they chose it for a reason. Not one said you can buy at Target. I'm all for a variety of KZread channels discussing photography, gear, experiences and so forth, but I also believe titles should be accurate and deliver on the information that is promised. That is how you get more "Likes" and "Subscribes" and loyal viewers. Sorry, but just seemed you were raising a lot of false flags.

It is focus by wire - not mechanical focus, even if it feels so. But it works so much better that on the Fuji system. So Leica did a great job here.

My question for you is, do you think if you didnt have the injury...you'd still be shooting GFX ?! I'm thinking about jumping into the medium format lane...been seeing the GFX50Sii on sale used + brand new $2500 - $2900 range. Seems like a great deal.

Not the fault of YouTue reviewers, Accessory prices are readily available to look up. It's really up to the consumer to research the prices before deciding to buy a Q2. Or just decide not to buy the accessories. They are really optional (not essential to operate the camera). Of course you can trick out your BMW with upgrades and enhancements that would equal the cost of the car.

Sorry to hear about that. I am glad you can continue with your photography. Thanks for making these videos.. GFX50Sii and a7r user here. I owned a Leica m240 with a 35 summicron for 7 years until I sold it. I had a Leica Q 1 for about 8 months and then sold it It felt expensive for how fragile it seemed. That said, I think it’s the best camera I’ve ever used. As far as just using it, it’s stunning. Feels amazing, the AF was totally great on the mark 1 and the lens was incredible. Thinking about getting a q2 one day. Not anytime soon though $$$

One of the first things you said was that you had a brain injury and your right hand trembles more than the other. Well I have the same problem. I used to be a Canon shooter until I tried the Fujifilm X100S at which point I sold all of my Canon gear. My second Fujifilm camera was the XT1, which I grew to really dislike, delayed shutter lag, poor AF and skin peeling away from the body were the main reasons. Fast forward to 2024 and I have 6 Fujifilm bodies now and more lenses than I’ll ever need or use. On February 20, I preordered the Fujifilm X100VI, hoping to get it for my trip to Thailand. No surprise it was still on back order before I departed , so I bought a Q2 for the trip. Haven’t used it yet. Yes, accessories are expensive and hopefully the IBIS works well.

Thanks for your video! Although cost is not so important discussion when talking of Leicas, I would add that file size per Mpix is huge compared to orher brands and therefore you have to buy a lot more storage. I would be interested on your opinion when comparing IQ with Fuji X/GFX. I bought Q2 over a year ago in dark winter and dissappointed to photos compared to Fuji/Canon and returned it in 2 weeks. Now I kind of miss it or dream M6/11.

I quite agree with your video. I purchased a slightly used/new Leica Q a few years ago from an estate sale and made the same discoveries as you did with the Q2. The kit seemed incomplete so I went about getting some accessories. I purchased the leather 1/2 bottom custom from another supplier that indicated it fit a Q as I couldn't get a Leica one. I had to order a spare battery from Leica directly and it took 4 months to come to me as I wasn't able to purchase a new one at a camera store. I purchased a custom leather case to surround and enclose the camera and it wasn't cheap too as I wasn't able to find a Leica one. I notice that the Q3 has come out recently and its supposedly even better than the Q2 from what has been said, but then when you factor in the accessories, it gets to be an expensive upgrade. I love my Q and I think I'm going to continue to use it rather than upgrade to the Q2 or Q3 until I have to.

In case you didn't know, the Leica Q battery is the same as the Panasonic DMW-BLC12, which is the battery used in the Panasonic G7 and GX8. There are good aftermarket batteries for those cameras which cost half the original, or even less. You can easily buy aftermarket Panasonic batteries which will work perfectly in your Q.

I sold my x100v for a Leica Q as my main travel camera and experienced a similar scenario, except mine didn’t come supplied with the original hood and lens cap. Fortunately, I managed to negotiate a better price so I could order in those accessories. I live in South Africa so almost everything has to be imported or is on special order, where you almost want to buy spares of everything in case you can’t buy it in the future. ...and t’s not just those accessories that come with the camera you want… Now you want to buy a hand grip, a leather case, a thumb grip, a new bag that matches the aesthetic, filter system, etc… But at the end of the day, the feeling you get while using the camera, which you’ve personalised yourself, makes the whole shooting experience a lot greater. (Except your bank account won’t be too happy),

I use a q2 reporter, it is the camera i have always with me. The camera is weather and dust resistent- As some users suggest i taped the micro slots and the slot on back side to make even better prevent for dust. For the same reason i buyed the Leica protector. I also have a extra battery but using the original strap. Before buying the protector I loved to use the Q2 without protector because it fits my hands it was perfect in my hands, I am lefthanded with large hands, maybe for other people there is a problem with holding the camera without accesoires ? I am a little sad about that taping the slots micro and back side and use of protector is recommend as extra protection against dust but i did not interest in video with the q2 so its only an aesthetic issue. Other is i prefer the q2 reporter because it has not the „red dot“ as „anti-theft device“ I was very happy that i can handheld the q2 almost to 1/8s , which allows handheld shots at night. The colors of the camera a spectacularly , i also love the bnw, using capture one 23 for transform to bnw. If You think about high price You may also think about Low loss of value and high resale possibility, even after years. Maybe You are happy with the q2 in 10, maybe 20 years also and it is still fine, i did not know other cameras that has this lifespan or minimal loss of value, therefore i think the q2 is not overpriced.

I sold all my fuji-gear and bought a Leica M10 and I love it!!! But yes, When I bought that extra battery I almost lost it 😅 and my leather case (not Leica branded) I had to pay 260-300$. But I’m still VERY happy with the change! The M10 is something else, and the Q2 looks and feels so much more nice than other brands, because it’s a more expensive unit, through the whole process. Non of them are perfect. But the feel are genuinely a bless! But still, I think it’s the consumer’s responsibility to check the price for accessories as it’s not needed most of the times. And what I’ve seen many youtubers makes fun of the cost of a spare battery. The funny thing I think is that people have gear for like 10k with all the lenses and bodies, but they think an M is to expensive. Then I guess the M isn’t for them (or the Q2). Many photographers have the financial possibilities to by a Leica, if they really want one and sell their gear. The other thing is, you get more from your Leica when you sell it compared of other brands, Especially lenses. And that’s important to calculate as well. :)

To be honest, at least for most Street Photography and snapshots, I've been fine with my iPhone (13 Pro Max). It also shoots amazing video. When I'm doing something more involved, I'll whip out the Sony A7R IV. I do love having smaller form cameras (like the Fuji X100 and the Sony RX100 V)... but since most photos we take end up on digital social media platforms, I just haven't seen much use for them over the iPhone's capabilities. That being said, if I did have extra funds to just go crazy, sure, I'd pick up a Leica because of the prestige and other characteristics that make it such a desirable camera. But is it a necessity? For me? Probably not. At least not over other cameras that would allow for great quality images with more options at a more reasonable price. In regards to dealing with hand shaking... have you considered using a monopod to help stabilize the camera? As always, another great video, Jose. Keep 'em coming!

Great contribution to common sense. My problem with larger cameras came for a serious neck injury affecting balance plus difficulty with hands. Looking at the Q2 for a while but ended up with the XPRO 3 - got two because my dexterity is awful re changing lenses and I like the Fuji primes. All fine but as you can tell the rep of Leica still cause me to yearn for one occasionally... sigh!

And wait weeks too. I would never entertain a q2 - not only are they ugly and overpriced, but they are not even made of brass, just alloy, and have numerous well documented faults and user issues. I stopped buying new Leicas when the black chrome on my r’s began bubbling up. Most people are fully aware of the premium cost of Leica equipment and many will have seen the video of the Limited Edition Hermes model. I have not found any KZread presenters who have 'hidden' the costs. But it is a bit rich of you to sneer at another presenter for 'bragging' when you are doing exactly the same. You say you sold ALL your GFX gear to get the Leica. Well, GFX gear is ALSO expensive and equally beyond the means of many photographers, as is a second-hand Leica. Then you move on to telling everyone about how you bought Fuji stock, another thing that is beyond the means of most people. Next you let the audience know that you 'ONLY' paid $300 for your strap, half-case and thumbrest. Amazon has a half-case for $25.00, a thumbrest for $15 and a strap for $22. I found your video patronising and definitely don't like it. In my experience people like to see expensive gear being displayed even though they may never buy any. This includes full-frame cameras from Nikon, Canon, Sony and others, bags from Wotancraft, Billingham etc. that are also expensive. But your final comments are the worst, telling people they don't need to buy a Leica, there are expenses they may not be aware of but also making sure they know that YOU own one. If that is not bragging, then I don't know what is.
