    Great video Brandon! informative and relaxed! I would probably if my budget can handle it keep the Leica, if you keep on using it it is gonna become fun, that happens whit every camera. The IQ that it produces its just beautiful and to me looks more pleasing than the Fuji shots. Btw little off topic, hope you gonna do some overview of the last update to the R5c? It seams really good but cant find any info how much better the IQ got and are the 30% battery life noticeable. Keep up the great work!

    Keep the X100V, ditch the Leica and get a full frame camera from another brand with fast 35mm and 85mm lenses. Why? Because the Leica is too expensive a camera to have such issues with basic essential functions such as WB, contrast and exposure. It's already unacceptable for a cheap camera, even more so at that price point. The X100V is the most fun pocket camera possible so definitely a keeper. Having the option of changing lenses is always useful, and with a different brand you also get a different flavor of colors and optics. No need to stick to Fujifilm only. Have fun!

    I've had my Q2 for a year and I have no regrets. It's a camera that works the way I think. The image quality from the sensor and crazy sharp lens is spectacular so my editing in post is minimal. The Q2 reproduces what my eyes see without wasting time on a computer. On top of that it's built like a tank and it's a joy to hold which inspires me to go out and take pictures. Keep it!

    @@caffeinatedcameras I’d wanted a Q2 for two years. The guy I used to buy all my camera gear from moved to work at the Leica store. And he let me play with a Q2 every time I went in to drool over one! I waited til I was good enough (in my opinion) to warrant one for landscapes. Two weeks in and I’d completely fallen in love. I took shots I never dreamed of. And it never left my side. So I ditched the XH2S and all my primes and moved to the SL2S and got a 24-90 to cover all the bases. Only thing I’ll get now is a 90-280 to be able to get that 150 sort of sweet spot. Also, every time I take shots now, players ask for the high res version. Hardly ever got that with Sony or Fuji and these players don’t know a Leica from an armchair!

    You know why you like the touch and feel of the Q2???? You are maturing. Respectfully, I have been shooting for over 25 years and I did the lot, run and gun, multitudes of subjects, photoshopping to the ends of the earth, so many facets of photography but now I turn 50!!! and all the gimmicks and hype no longer apply, I now just enjoy the process and moment of " MAKING " a photo. A few months ago I purchased a new XPro3 with 16,23 and 35mm primes ( the smaller lenses). My love for getting out now and making a photo has been rekindled from using this new gear. I have multiple canon, sony bodies in my work bags and they have not come out with me for personal use in travels for over 8 years. They are just too big, to cumbersome and just ..............boring. The XPro just looks, feels and handles so much differently. It lives with me everywhere, small footprint and superb performance. I can see how the 100v and Q2 are alluring as all 3 cameras have a couple of things in common, their size and use and feel. Other bodies just feel like computers with lenses where the other feel some little bit more.......special. I considered a Q2 but the 28mm was too restricted for the price. I respect the brand, but the pay nearly $9,000 AUD for a Q2 which only has 28mm is liking buying a lambo with only 2 gears. I want the flexibility. I could have gone the 100v but again, the 23mm was restrictive. The XPro 3 just ticked the boxes, form factor, performance, quality and the flexibility to change focal lengths. I know the Q2 can give you different focal lengths, but that so called feature by Leica is IMO, pretty desperate and it cheapens the camera. 70mm on a Q2 is not like 70mm on any other camera, it's just a digital zoom that is .................cheap and dodgy.

    @@caffeinatedcameras I played with the M11 and agree its a nice camera. The price of kitting one out for the focal lengths I want is just way over priced. Don't get me wrong, I am in position to quite easily purchase one, but the cost vs gain having assessed RAW files is not proportional. For the price of a Q2 or M11 you could get the XPro 3 or new 4 with an arsenal of great glass, sexy carry bag, carbon fibre sticks, airline ticket to an exotic country to photograph and you would still be ahead with change to spare. Like your video, thanks for sharing.

When I test drove the M11 at a Leica store I used my own SD card to take photos and assess RAW files back home. Aside from the 60mp, I could have told you the photo was taken with a nikon, canon, sony, fuji or lumix and you would believe me as there is no Leica Look. Its a raw photo captured on a Sony sensor in a body badged Leica. LOL, I have even posted photos taken with my Fuji on a Leica forum with metadata removed and the forum members drooled over them.........If they only knew they were taken with an XPro 3!!!!!!! How evil !!!!

I have done comparison tests and the Q2 "amazing" lens when put side by side with the X-Pro 3 is frankly hard to tell the difference. First up, great video. You’ve got a great style of talking to the camera. I had a full Fuji set up. XT3’s, X100v, GFX50r. I used them all for weddings, and the latter two for myself as well- personal photography, etc. End of 2021 I started to get annoyed with the Fujis, and I sold the GFX50r. At the same time I saw a used Q2, for a ridiculously lower price, not a mark on it- so I bought it. The X100v, after that- didn’t get used much. Then at weddings I started to really dislike the XT’s, and it all went and I now shoot Sonys for a weddings. But, the Q2 is for me. And as I type this, the new 5.0 firmware update has went live, which brings Eye AF. This is going to be so good for documentation of my kids, family- as that’s the one area I didn’t like about the Q2. Downloading it when I get home! Post some more Q2 videos- maybe try the 5.0 update for Eye AF?

After reading about the X100V, I got one. But I always got conflicted about what camera to use. So I sold it all and got a Q2. I plan on using it forever. I thought about getting a Q2 but in the end I decided to go back to my X-Pro 2. Yes it's only 24Mp but I hardly ever print anyways and if I do I can still get fantastic poster size prints. The reason why is the flexibility in lenses and with all the third party manual lenses for X mount, sky's the limit. Also it performs, especially in the areas of where you were having issues with the Q2. Another reason that I've been doing recently is creating color and filmic recipes, I even have one programed to have that b/w Leica punch with the old vintage lens I use on it on occasion, in fact something I have yet to do is adapt Leica M lenses to it but Voigtlander comes very close. Not only did I save a lot money but I am able to get the lenses I want to build a fun and inspiring kit... and this is coming from a [primarily] Nikon DSLR shooter.

    Hey, great video! I agree with your arguments. The Q2 is such a beautiful camera, but the X100V is also great in it's own class. Regarding your question at the end, let me tell you my own experience: Last year I bought the Leica Q used because of the YT hype and I was curious about that piece of tech. I was really amazed about that camera and after using it several months I had the same question like you - keep it or ditch it and get a cheaper system. I sold my Q and months later I kinda missed the Leica build quality. I'm a tech enthusiast person and don't care about prestige or being part of a "club". But brands like Leica or Porsche just spark my curiosity, because of their highly developed products. You don't need to have the money to own the product just to be interested. As you said, no other camera brand comes close to the build quality and feeling of Leica. That's the part which made me "regret" selling my Q. Long story short: A few months ago I bought a used Leica Q2 monochrome and mentally I justify the purchase for extreme low light and have a second camera system for color images. And on the side I try my best to make content on YT about it :D I just love tech and high craftsmanship and that's why I find value in Leica (I reject the club membership and embrace technology :D). Other people don't see these value and for them there are plenty of alternatives on the market. Hope this helps a little to find your personal decision :)

I totally agree on the fact that the x100v is a nice toy for quick aesthetic fantastic photos to share right away (for weekend gateways with friends, parties with the flash...). The Leica would be for other moments, a nice second camera in the bag next to my R5 for more pro shoots, nice BTS content. It's hard to shoot pro on the x100v, but the Leica was built for that. Interesting theme - currently I am shooting with Fuji XT-4, and although I have a number of lenses, the one I use most is the 16-55mm. Well, this camera set up is for work, and I am getting closer to retirement. I love taking photoes, and also do a few "story telling" videoes. However, I want to continue taking photoes - so I have been dreaming about the Q2. However, I struggle - cause I am afraid of being stuck with the 28mm. Right now I am looking into the XT-5, maybe with 2 or 3 primes. Fine, the travel bag will be bigger - but... Luckily I still have time to decide :-) Anyways, Fuji 100V versus Q2 - the Q2 wins hands down! You have full frame, and macro

    Great and very honest sharing on the prestige and brand status thing. I am in the same quandry as you but at the other end: I have a Fuji X-Pro 3 and love it but thinking of trading for a Q2. I am trying out a friend's right now. The Q2 should have solved the problems they finally did fix in the Q3 (like no USB for in-camera charging and crappy auto-focus - although the Q3 hasn't totaly fixed there either.) But believe it or not, the X-Pro 3 image quality is pretty close between it and the Q2. If you like the clicky wheel thing with amazing customization if you need it - or just want to run minimalist with a single lens - it does that. So as to what you should do... I don't know but one thing your video gives a vibe that after your trip to LA the honeymoon period was over with the Q2. The fact that you brought up selling it is telling this early on. So based on that, I think you should sell. (If you haven't already). I am on the fence on the upgrade to a Q2. Mucho moneda mas. My pixel peeping of the Fuji results and the Leica are pretty neck-to-neck. I like the ergos on the Leica much more. But I am at a total loss at why people like the V100 when you can get an awesome used X-Pro 2 for $1000. It's both fun like the TikTok 100 at half the rpice and as serious as the Q2. Let me know what I should do now 🙂

    So what I find is that the Leica "build quality" and "looks" are what we respond to as a superior example of beautiful industrial design but seems to me it should do basic things photography-related like AWB, AF and have great JPEGs like on so so many other cameras. The camera, not how it is supposed to perfom on basic things like WB, focus, dynamic range, etc. It is built to take great pictures and it does in many ways (a som. Don't get me wrong; I have never held a camera as amazing in my hands like the Q2. It is a marvel. But we should only have to "slow down" with a camera because we want to. It should be able to match what we want from it as a tool. But when you bring this all up to fellow Leica owners, they say "well is falls short but Leica can charge a premium" so that makes no sense. As to "shooting for social" just use an iPhone. Social images are a little bit bigger than a postage stamp on Insta anyway (and the wrong aspect ratio if you shoot landscape)and a using a Leica for that is like killing a mosquito with an atom bomb. Besides the quality on the iPhone Pro Max cameras is insanely good. So back to the Q2... it should be insanely good at what it does as a camera. I can't give the Q2 a pass on its shortcomings just because it looks cool and is expensive and the red dot. So I may very well pass on it tomorrow when KEH opens up. @@caffeinatedcameras

  • @caffeinatedcameras

    @caffeinatedcameras

    then you and I disagree on it's ability to do things "insanely good" And I chose Leica for a few reasons, none of which are the same and appeal to me the same way on fuji. And that's ok. I loved the XT3, XT30, the X100v, but it's not the same. I didn't buy the Q2 for AF, I bought it for it's looks, image quality, and the way it made me feel when I used it - I could care less about the other stuff. When I need that stuff, I reach for a different camera plain and simple. @@burneshollyman2621

    Yeah. I buy cameras for how they work, feel, features (or minimalist approach as well) and the image quality without excuses for their shortcomings, but not as a $6K fashion accessory :-) The Q2 you have is gorgeous. Lady GaGa, Beyonce or Taylor Swift would date you if they saw your Ghost Q2. That said, I am simply looking for the Q2 to at least do the basics that any other $800 point-and-shoot has been able to do for many years now. The sad fact is I will probably buy the Q2 anyway for the same reasons you did :-). Some other feedback on your great video (besides loving it and learning a lot) is that I do get the vibe that you have some conscious or unconscious regrets about buying the Q2 - else why the trade-it question. @@caffeinatedcameras

    Q2’s main weakness is AWB and WB in general. The Kelvin scale is in 300 per adjustment which is too wide for accurate temperature input. I am not sure why a 6000 camera should have such a limit when it comes to the Kelvin scale. Another most common concern is the lens. The lens is indeed the strongest selling point. It’s sharp.. very sharp. It can do macro! A huge deal! But it’s distortion is strong although correction is applied by software.The cost of that is the sharpness of the extreme corners and edges. Also that lens is closer to 24/25mm than 28mm. That makes composition much challenging to some people who expect to deal with a true 28mm lens. I would love to have a true 28mm lens as this is why I opt for Q2. To me, the manual control of the Q2 is also a weakness comparing to the true Leica range finder. The lens manual focus experience is much better and more responsive than most other digital cameras out there but is inferior to the M by a lot. The resistance and the degree of turning are just not right. Distance scale is too short between 2 meter and infinity. Aperture ring is in 1/3 stops (vs half stop in M) which can be a mess when counting exposure by haptic feedbacks in full manual while the shutter is in one full stop scale per click and users need to use the right wheel to access the 1/3 stops. Honestly it is a big mess, at least to me. It’s just not ideal for full manual control to me. I ended up use the camera in aperture priority mode most of the time. Not fun! Knowing the weakness of it makes me understand how to use it as a tool effectively although I still like and keep it mainly because of the lens. And one more positive note is that this camera makes a good one-camera solution for travel. It is also a great family camera since everyone in the family can operate ( just putting it in Auto mode). The weather seal feature also gives me a peace of mind to use it in rain and snow. But I won’t be surprised I may sell it soon to fund a new M body. The more I use it the more I feel it is just another digital camera with a much better haptic feeling but without best execution.

    The Q2 raw files are very saturated but raw files are meant to be edited and so reducing the saturation is a basic adjustment and may be the only one required, if indeed it is required for any particular image. The standard profile JPEG is far less saturated out of the camera and so is vivid than the raw file.

    Hi Travis. I’m really visual and there’s something that just doesn’t appeal to me about that camera. It’s a fantastic camera but I don’t think I’d use it much. And as far as the issues I’ve had, it’s just being new to the system. In the last few days of using it I’ve got much more consistent results thankfully. I forgot to say thank you for watching too!

    I had the X100(S) for some time but as you said, did not inspire me. Too plasticky, too many buttons, didn't feel right. If you still have them, sell the X100V and get a brand new Nikon Z f . Nikon nailed it with this retro-style / film-like camera. It is fun to shoot, plus: It is top notch technology with brand-new manual focussing aid features that are just amazing. I still have a Leica Q (1) and would probably keep it "just in case", as prices do not drop that fast still can sell later, and my most loved photos in the past were taken with a Leica Q.

Now, I don’t say this as some kind of brand loyalty to Leica as I’ve had several other brands and just found my way to Leica. Yes, it’s quirky and frustrating at times. But when you’re on and you get it right, it’s awesome. I have a question for you in that where did you get that silver thumbs up?

    Perhaps, related to "The Club" idea, is that we can see ourselves photographically worthy of the elite equipment. An analogy would be getting a $100-200K performance car. A Ford Fusion is a perfectly fine and functional car. But if a person can take the performance car on a race course and drive it the way it is meant to be driven, they've connected their skills with the equipment's abilities in a special way. And as they drive it more, do they continue to get even better? With photography equipment, including Leica cameras and lenses, the best measure would be, "Do I want to make a large print of my images?" where large would be bigger than 8x10 or 11x14, since 8x10 is "just" regular paper size. Perhaps the print is only to hang in one's own home. This is even important when "enjoy the process of taking the photo" is paramount, because the print continues to connect us to that process and enjoyment. As for whether to keep the Q2, I'm tempted to say "No". There are too many ways that you are fighting the camera rather than meshing with it. Post-processing should generally be unnecessary, it should only be to enhance rather than fix. Of course, if a special image had something technically wrong or weak, fix that. But fixing all the colors because they're not what you want isn't photography. Having the focal length that is a mismatch on a fixed lens camera seems like a mistake. I could never get a Q2 or X100*, because I will always want the option to use an 85-105mm lens. But a way around that, for less than the price of the Q2, is the Leica M240, a Summicron 90mm f/2 from the 1970s, and a Zeiss 35mm f/2. The total cost is comparable to a Nikon Z6II, 85mm f/1.8S, and 35mm f/1.8S. The photographic process and image results are very, very different. [I'm writing this to read to myself as much as for anyone else...]

    Incredibly well written and you make some Really solid points. I feel strongly that I am to a point where I think some of my photography is good enough to gift to people or to hang in my home. This feels like the camera I want to do that with. And I totally see where you’re coming from with “fighting” the camera, but it is getting better each day, but I think that fighting is also making me better. It’s making me work harder. And im very much a person that wants to get better and rarely is that done by doing the easy thing. And I’m definitely looking at getting a second Leica body with a 50 or something a tad longer to fill the other focal length.

  • @UnconventionalReasoning

    @UnconventionalReasoning

    @@caffeinatedcameras Thanks. There is the good "work harder" and the bad "work harder". Fixing what the camera does to get what you want seems like the bad kind. Putting the effort into creating even more spectacular images would be the good kind. While digital art is great, one of the benefits of Leica equipment is that the image should be almost the final product out of the camera. Take a look at the Thambar lens. Any attempt to "fix" an image will destroy it.

    @@caffeinatedcameras Nice. I've stayed away from the higher-end filmmaker cameras. I'll max out with used Leica cameras. 🤣 If you can find a way to try a Leica M camera, either the M Type-240, M10, or M11, it would be worth it. Use a 35/50mm Summicron or Summilux. Then you can compare the "photo creation process inspiration" with the Q2. This video was the "non-interchangeable lens" comparison. Letting go of that requirement may allow you to find the better option for you. Because then if you say the fixed-lens Q2 wins, you'll be more confident with that conclusion. And if you decide the X-T5 wins, that is also more informed.

    Personally I compare my Sony A7III with 24mm lens directly to my Q2. Both are around the same size but to be fair I should be comparing a Sony A7RIV rather than the 24MP A7III. However, the A7III does actually compare very well with the Q2 in use apart from the quality of screens and initial complexity of the menu system. In everyday use though I get equal pleasure and great photos from both [and other cameras and lenses]

SOoo... anywhoo, for the price of the Hodinkee and Q3 around the corner IDK homie, I may have waited for the announcement coming soon and spent the extra 7-800 for the newer tech : USBC/Phase detection and file selector (if you wont need 60mp all the time / family friends instas lower resolution saver/ Flip Screen, maybe internal memory and likely EVF w/more dots similar to the SL2. Those are def worthy upgrades to think about sine you're a new user for not much dough IMO?
