The Reality of Rescue | Biggun's Story
Үй жануарлары мен аңдар
Biggun, or known in Canada's harness race world as NOTROUBLE DECHAFRA, was a 12-year-old Standardbred gelding that came to us during our May Buy Out mission. He stepped off the trailer with an infected injury on his back left leg and had yellow liquid leaking from his right front pastern. After removing the bandage, Dr. Lydia was concerned that Biggun was leaking joint fluid, which can be life-threatening. They then let him rest in a stall while the pain mediation kicked in, and re-evaluated him. His blood work revealed several abnormalities, including lymphopenia, anemia, and icterus. Basically, Biggun's immune system wasn't working well enough to fight off the infection happening inside his body. Unfortunately, there was nothing we could do to make him feel comfortable nor live a normal life. After Biggun received the Last Act of Kindness, a necropsy revealed that his injuries went straight to the bone. This is the reality of rescue work and why we think it is important for you to see both sides to our rescue work.

Excellent choice...how do people sleep at night when they allow an animal to get to this level, shame on them!

And they create sadness around the world by their neglect and mistreatment
When big business gets involved in anything horse related, it seems to turn beautiful animals into "disposable objects". Everything comes down to the almighty dollar! Biggun should never have made it to the United States. This beautiful horse suffered a very long time. Thank you for ending his suffering.

I rescued a Standard Bred gelding nearly 3 years ago. Also I rescued his long term paddock mate, a Connemara mare. He was in a pitiful angry state when he arrived, she was battered, bruised and shutdown. Now they're healthy, shiny, robust and loving their lives. God knows we owe it to them to be there for them, especially when they're such a throw away animal, moreso than dogs. 🍀

I rescued an OTTB who'd been retire (!) from racing at three. She had multiple racing induced problems that took literal years to diagnose and solve. Body work, red light therapy and a chiropractor fixed her and it took six months. She looks like a warmblood. People ask me why don't I breed her. Because she's a thoroughbred and it's hell to be born a thoroughbred. She lives on a farm and all she has to do is be good for the farrier (she's the best!) and play with her herd. Biggest compliment I've ever gotten was "You've done right by this horse."
When I heard that his white cell count was so low, my heart dropped. Even with antibiotics and surgery, you can't force an immune system to recover fast enough, which means he's at high risk for systemic infection regardless. The silver lining is he's no longer in pain.
Thank you for posting this...I fell in love with him when I saw him get off the trailer and I'm the one who named him Biggun' and I've been anxiously watching and waiting for news of this big, beautiful boy...and I'm so sad and sorry that he wasn't able to pull through. Thank you, Dr Gina and Dr Lydia, for doing the best you could for him...He didn't know me in life, but you can bet I'll be looking for him when we meet in heaven!😢❤

Thank you for keeping it REAL. No more pain, being shuffled around and no auction to slaughter! Thank you for your kind act, run free Biggins....
Thank you for trying to treat him. At least in his last hours he found love and kindness.💗
Poor boy, thank you for doing the kindest thing.
Would you be able to post a necropsy on the horse plus vet channel? I would be interested in seeing the process and diagnostic findings. To those who think I am weird, first I am a nurse (human) however I have always found veterinary medicine fascinating, and second keep on thinking I’m weird because it doesn’t bother me haha
Run Biggun run there will be no more pain, no more hurt, no abuse, just green pastures with sweet clover and friends to play with. HPHS vets are the best, i couldn't do their jobs cuz it would break me into a billion pieces that super glue couldn't put back together again.
Makes me sad almost all of the standardbreds that come to you have to have the last act of kindness. They are such wonderful animals!
Run free you beautiful boy. I'm so very sad that you had to go through so much pain where you could have probably been helped so much earlier and found a loving home as a pasture pet. Shame on the people who just used this horse to throw away when no more money could be made from him. At least he didn't have to suffer any more and was saved from a horrible death through slaughter. No horse ever should have to go through what the most of the horses have been through. It breaks my heart and soul 😢 thank you for caring

Thank you for your kindness for this horse and all the horses that come under your care .
It is maddening when I see these very horses going through sales auctions and people bidding tens, even hundred thousand on Standardbred horses only to be ruined at such a young age. RIP sweet boy. I am so happy that Horse Plus was able to end his suffering before he took the long, torturous trip to the slaughter house.
Poor Biggun. Such a beautiful horse with such extensive injuries. RIP Biggun
You did the right thing for the beautiful boy. He is pain free in a better place now.
Such amazing Veterinarians ! They explain the diagnosis and prognosis more thoroughly than I have ever heard a human Dr speak to a patient ! Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us !

I'm sad to see this gorgeous boy leave us. But I would much rather he pass on surrounded by the care and love of Horse Plus, than face fear in a slaughterhouse. He was safe and he knew he was, even if he was hurting. Thank you for showing him the kindness and compassion he deserved.
I saw the pain in his eyes. So glad you were able to help him to get painless. Run free Biggun

Immense gratitude to Horse Plus for infinite care and compassion you show to animals and here, to Biggun, a young horse with a very sweet face. He came home to you.

It's so sad, he probably could have had a new home if his previos owner had cared for his injuries straight away. He was so young and obvious such a sweet and gentle boy that he could have made such a wonderful pet for somebody else. If his injury was so bad at the time the right decision should have been made and he should have had the last act of kindness given to him. Very upsetting to watch 😢

😡This really makes me angry because we now know his past owner sent him into the slaughter pipeline instead of goving him a respectful last act of kindness. They were okay to let him suffer over and over all the way down to Mexico. His last emotions would be fear and confusion on top of excruciating pain. The amount of neglect is unbelievable.😢 poor sweet horse.Since I was child I have been in love with horses. Unfortunately I've never heard that Pleasure of owning one... I regret that I have missed that honor... But I have a heart for all of them.
What is desperately needed to change things like this from happening is that all preforming horses much have a pet health insurance policy before they are allowed to compete! I'm sure they have this type of insurance in the States, so getting in touch with these companies to get on board with you in Washington is a win-win to me. And if they have half a brain, they will see the potential of income if a law like this gets passed. So don't forget to remind them of this Tawnee.
So sad for Biggun! You know, I am kind of missing some of the success stories too. Maybe I am not getting noticed correctly, but I am not seeing many of them. I love, love, love HPHS!! ❤😊

Thank you for caring for these athletes that fall through the chasms of our failed systems. I really enjoy these "tributes" to these horses, even when they really pull at my heart. It's the reality and it needs to be known. I love the Horse Plus Vets. Wonderful, caring, intelligent women.
I wonder if he had been given some very strong meds without knowing some interaction hoping to cure and when it didn’t work and his immune system had shut down (long term steroids) he was thrown away. A gelding in the race world is of no use if he can’t run.
This sis probably going to sound weird, but I'm glad you do these videos. I obviously hate that these videos have to be made, but I think that making them helps people understand the realities of what you see and deal with everyday. These videos make it harder to ignore the cruelty that's done to these poor babies and will hopefully lead to better laws protecting them. And as a Canadian and, originally, Quebecoise, I want to apologise to Biggun for all that he suffered at the hands of my country's people.
Standardbreds are usually so kind and tolerant. Probably why it is so easy to mistreat them. They make wonderful 1st horses for beginners. We had an elderly mare, Amber. You could put anyone on top of her and she would do her absolute best to keep them from falling off.
My heart is breaking for him. I love Standardbreds. 😥
