Hey bubba.. I started watching you probably a year and a half ago. I was a drug addict, with a 22 year prison sentence i luckily dodged with 8 years supervised probation. Poker gave me a hobby that allowed me to make new friends, go out and make extra money, and my life changed. Just because you dont know these stories, doesnt mean that i am the only one who leans on you when we need to. Your family is important and us being men, we want MORE! Be happy now for what you do have, and remember, it could be so much worse. You got this boss 👍

Dude…I’m really rooting for you. It is SO HARD to support a family on poker, even if you’re a winning player. I’m 35 years old and divorced, I’ve never relied on poker for my income because I don’t have the balls to do it. I played a maximum of 20 hours a week, I’m a winning player, nothing crazy I play $2-5 and net around $10,000 of extra money on average each year. Even my playing 20 hours a week helped lead to my divorce. You’re clearly a very strong minded and mentally stable person. Now that I’m single I play much more, I still have my business but poker is such a hard mental grind. I hope you blow up to a million subs like Wolfgang or Brad Owen and get tons of sponsorship money. I would love to see a guy like you who’s a respectable family man gain that type of success. Instead of a guy like Tom Dwan who parties and pisses all his money away on dumb stuff. Good luck 🍀

The most miserable year of my life is when I tried to support a family playing poker. I love poker. I didn’t love poker at all during that time. It creates too much stress when you are playing to support your family. It’s great as a supplemental income though. I would never do that again. And to be fair, I was making money playing during that time. It just wasn’t fun.

I don't know how anyone does it? I cashed in a WSOP circuit event and had a $12k month in 2005, but the poker boom had an expiration date. So much variance and when you do make a final table at my local casinos then the blinds are so high it's just a bingo style shovefest. Pro poker probably has about a .0001 success rate

So one other thing I noticed in your intro is where you talk about how you live a good life, go on vacations, eat out, etc. I know when I was in my 20's I was broke as hell all the time and it was because I ate out too much. My wife and I these days will eat out or get takeout 1-2 times per week and aside from that we cook our own meals at home, much more affordable. Since you've gone from 140K to 100K you need to adjust your lifestyle for the reduction in disposable income and try to eliminate some of those extras that make you feel good, but are also taxing your limited resources. Vacations aren't usually cheap either. Not saying you shouldn't treat yourself, but try to find some ways to cut costs as well as look at ways you can increase income. If your wife is staying at home to care for the family perhaps there are interests of hers she can delve into that generate revenue, or perhaps you could look into having her operate a daycare out of your home to make additional revenue, etc.

@@BrantzenPoker yeah, easiest is probably StakeKings or something like that, you get to select any markup as well. But I'm sure you'd get some help there. I understand the struggles of relying on poker solely to cover all the expenses, when you hit a 2.5 month live downswing it makes you really question your decisions. But, if you're bringing in 100K between poker and content creation, you've 2.5x'd your previous 40k results which is pretty solid. But if you're unable to grow your roll and move up in stakes, then you're going to cap out at some point, so setting an "I need to make X" amount goal could be detrimental and cause you to force the action trying to acheive that goal, rather than just focusing on making correct decisions which is where you'll earn the money in the long-run. Part of the reason I'm working on getting more involved on working in the poker industry is that I want to have another income so that I'm not in a spot where I HAVE to rely on poker to sustain everything.

Thanks for sharing I'm in a position a few years behind. Wife makes a similar income, I've just finished studying while being a stay at home dad and aspire to make poker a side income, that hopefully after a few years could allow my wife to quit. I think you're thoughts are super valid, specially while providing for a family. It becomes different when it's not just you. Good on you for trying! If you really look at it, it's impressive to bring in $100k by yourself, pure from your own efforts!

B-man. Thank you for opening up. It's good that you ask (yourself) these hard, meaningful questions. You know that you're a good player, and an excellent content creator... so why would one FEEL like a failure? Consider if you had a friend that just started playing poker; you taught and coached them, then on their first day at the casino, they did everything right, made good plays, won several good pots, but got felted on one big bad beat. They now feel like a failure, what would you say to them? What we focus on is what we feel- if you are focused on the -result- (i.e. cashing out, or income), then your feelings will be tied very much to just that result. You could have great games, stories, and 500k subscribers, but if the paycheck is what you measure success by, then you know what will create the feeling of failure. So what to do? In simple terms, A) you could shift your focus to the process of learning and growing as a player and creator (using ways to measure the -process-), or B) you can add another revenue stream that has more reliable $ coming for you, your family, and your sense of calm. Just food for thought, hope some of this helps the thought process. You're a very bright and talented young man, and you'll thrive wherever you aim your gifts. I look forward to seeing whatever you do next.

Wow - thanks so much for this thoughtful response. You bring up a lot of good points. The hard part of the situation I’m in is that, unfortunately, it all boils down to money. My life truly has shifted toward wanting to provide for my wife and daughter. The thing is, I can see the possibilities of this route giving both financial freedom and freedom of time, but it’s also a path I have no roadmap for. Everything as far as growing as a creator, accruing sponsorships, etc, can feel like a jump into the unknown. Hopefully it all pans out

Just some friendly advice. You have a tilt tell. When you’re in control and playing your A game, you’re waiting for both cards to be dealt to you and then you look. When you’re on tilt, you look when you only have one card. If you become conscious of that during a session, consider forcing yourself to go for a walk.

Poker income will grow as you continue to build your game and as you move to higher stakes BUT in the interim if you live in a high cost state for taxes (income and real estate) you might consider a relocation to a lower cost real estate and lower cost tax state where your lower "startup" living costs will allow you to get more more bang for the buck. Obviously NV and TX have big poker communities, reasonable real estate cost and zero income tax, so could be a consideration.
