I won't even bother to challenge you to produce the review in question because both you and I know you can't. What DID happen is that a writer mentioned a game in passing which was done by a woman he dated later, after the article was written. The mention was in a news article that mentioned *many* games. It wasn't a review, it was just a passing mention in a news roundup/preview. That's it. That's all that happened. What you're pointing out here is partly why I realized the original GG was bs...They were claiming it was about journalism ethics, but they were replacing the gaming magazine/websites with youtubers who have literally 0 ethical oversight other than their own personal morality. you might think IGN is bad, but the mere presence of an EIC means it's more ethical than "Bobs youtube gaming channel"(insert your fav gaming youtuber) who gets excited because Ubisoft sends him all the press copies of their games so he keeps feeding into their hype machine. I literally have to dig into video descriptions to see if what im watching is a review or an ad, and sometimes it's not listed and I am pretty darn sure it's an ad. Gaming journalism, such that it was, has completely collapsed on itself like a dying star since GG. Anyone that thinks it has improved, well let's just say you can safely dismiss their opinions. Not to say there aren't good youtube critics, but if culture war slop is their channe's focus, it's not that guy.

One of the things that led to the removal of the downvote was brigading by people like the GG2 pushers, as well as organized disinfo campaigns that would downvote official information by health organizations about, you know, health information. How did you missed all those "Gamers are dead" articles of 2014?!? Wasn't "gamer journalists" fault to join together and publish articles, in all big gaming sites in the same month, inciting gamers? Until that point it was just a small group in forums collecting evidences of "gamer journalists" whisper network (proved true by themselves) and indeed ethics, only when those articles show up that actually reached mass audience and things exploded. Unbelievable to see another "retrospective" missing that obvious giant point... Anyway, we won that war. Gamergate2 is fake and didn't have 1% of reach and audience from 2014 movement.

  • @DrkFX

    @1:34:18 : For sure, I can remind you: - Whisper network. - Preview hypes for mediocre games, thanks to access media VIP treatment (Ubisoft flying and paying 5 star hotels for previewers), - High scores for ads (full page Ads = high scores, even for games launching in broken or unfinished state, Kane&Lynch2 situation years before), - High Scores for "friends" of journos (a 20 HTML pages diary called game and receiving 8 of 10 from 5 reviewers, maker of HTML pages forever called "GameDev"), - Lack of consistency (Racing game specialist covering JRPG, reviewer that cover Football Manager gives lower score and complain about not have gameplay, Dead Rising 1 getting bad review [later deleted] because the author didn't understood it was a Japaneses comedy making fun of American horror movies). I agree with you about "echo chamber network and collude to promote the same message", the difference is journos tried their best to hide their whisper network while YTs are doing it in the open. All other points you mentioned don't exist and you invented: - Political beliefs, don't exist in gaming articles at that time, - Complain about racist, don't exist in gaming articles at that time, - Cancel people for wrong thinking, don't exist in gaming articles at that time, - Mass produce lowquality sansationalist rage bait, don't exist in gaming articles at that time, I like your channel and content but like you said at @1:30:58 "A lie is a lie", your conclusion trying to connect gamers claims from the past with "youtubers acting like the journos did" narrative is a huge lie.

    I, too, recollect the summer of 2014 where nearly every major gaming journalism site- even ones who were seemingly open rivals competing for ad-revenue and viewership- all released very similarly worded 'opinions of the editor' pieces, essentially gas-lighting two entire generations of online gamers and brushing over a multitude of video-game publishing sins (this was around the same time EA had just won the least ethical business in America two years in a row, over Exxon Mobile & Goldman Sachs.) I remember the very first independently done Game Awards by Geoff Keighly, who for all the crap he got about his Dorito & Mountain Dew promotion, funded video-game journalism with money from companies NOT apart of video games. He kept the funding 'clean.' Any bias Geoff had was a personal affinity for a video game, instead of being paid to care about it. It kept him authentic.

Do I even need to point out how that obviously destroys his narrative about how crazy and dangerous the GG supporters were? 2. Zoe Quinn was caught faking thr eats against herself on 4chan and Brianna Wu was caught faking "har assment" against herself on Steam. She didn't even log out of their account. They were conflating har assment and criticism on a regular basis. That and the FBI said there were credible thr eats or harassment against them. 3. Game journalists were caught coordinating how to cover GG on a mailing list called Game Journos Pros. They literally said they would make it all about har assment instead of corruption and ethics because they were absurdly unethical. That obviously being proven by coordinating how to lie on a mailing list and then doing so. Meaning that GG supporters were dead right about there being a conspiracy against them and said conspiracy was even outed. He didn't mention this at all. 4. A political opponent is immediately taken as a political enemy whose views are not only wrong but even dangerous. It sometimes gives the impression that it is no longer a question of what is right or wrong, but rather that it is primarily about defarming the other side and thereby winning some imaginary war. This is bewildering to me--I've never heard of any of this until this video. Makes me glad I'm not on Twitter, though. A few other folks have pointed this out, but as a writer, I just wanted to clarify that "sensitivity reading" is not a grift--it's just a specific form of research. If you're writing a story about a specific historical event, you might interview people who were there, or historians who focus on that specific event. Similarly, if you're writing, for example, about a character with a specific disability, you might hire a sensitivity reader who has that specific disability and would be able to read over your story to check for accuracy, as they obviously have real life experience in that area. Personal example: for a small personal project I did, I wrote a short story that involved characters from another country celebrating Christmas. I did research on how Christmas was celebrated there, but to be sure, I asked someone who was from that country to read over my story to make sure it was accurate. It wasn't as big a thing of hiring a professional sensitivity reader, but it's the same concept. Very basic stuff. Back on the wider topic of the video, while it sounds like I might disagree with you on some political stances, I'm really glad you're doing the work in being fair in covering this topic regardless of your own stance. Nice work.

    @flavionms

    24 күн бұрын

    @@jared20089 People with real experiences are also biased. They can report their experience, but their experiences are neither universal now very objective. There's a huge gap between events that happened and what people interpret and feel about them. But either way that doesn't matter, because biases aren't really a problem in writing. Unless you're specifically trying to make sweeping generalizations in your writings, which is ill-advised either way, all you're presenting is one perspective. Portraying one bad thing about one certain person who has a specific characteristic is not offensive, unless you as the viewer cannot comprehend that people are unique, even if they share some characteristic with you. For instance, remember the Pokemon movie? The main antagonist was a person with a disability who wanted to do some evil stuff to stop being disabled. Some people (not all, nor most, it's always just a small handful of people who act unreasonably like this) though that was problematic, because it implied people with disabilities just want to get rid of them. Of course, that is silly, because there are millions of people with disabilities out there, each with very different experiences and perspective. A statement about what one of them could maybe think means nothing about any other. Only someone particularly irrational you would think the movie is saying every disabled person just wants to get rid of their disability because they hate it and would do anything they could. Now, of course, you as the writer has the right to opt not to write a character like that because you're worried about either offending or convincing those very same unreasonable people. But that would be a loss for everyone else. The problem is that without your biases, your unique perspective, your humanity, you'll never write a good story.

  • @BabyCharmander

    @BabyCharmander

    @@flavionmsEr, no, just about every disabled person I know said that villain was an issue. There were ways the villain could have been written that would have made the portrayal better, and better storytelling in general. More accurate and caring portrayals of things can lead to better storytelling. For example, if your only disabled character is a villain, that kinda sucks. But if you have MULTIPLE disabled characters in your work, that can make for better storytelling, and also create some great narrative parallels. Wanna know a story that did that? The original Star Wars trilogy. It’s not a perfect story, of course, but both Luke AND Vader having prosthetic hands was an interesting narrative parallel. And that’s just one example. Also, no, obviously a single disabled person’s perspective is not going to represent every disabled person. That’s why groups of sensitivity readers exist, too, like the one that the people mentioned in this video are screaming about for some reason. I have to say, you and the other reply here effectively saying “NO! Don’t do THIS SPECIFIC KIND OF RESEARCH! That’s BAD!!” is some of the weirdest anti-writing advice I’ve ever heard.

    A few things (Don't know if you read comments, but if not I guess this is hear for other people to see): I have always thought it was painfully corny that people slap "gate" on the back of controversies. Gamergate is no different. It's lame. I also think ganging up on people on social media is lame, but what that Grummz guy is doing, if true, is not the same as what some (because I don't know about all of them) of the KZread guys do, especially in regards to targeting others or trying to attract negative attention to themselves. I'm also think some of these creators bloat the amount of content they put out, which can get tiresome. And yeah, no one deserves harassment, and it's also tiresome to see people talk in extremes. Definitely agreed that that conspiracy theories are conspiracy theories (and that "Get woke go broke" uses cherry picked examples a lot of the time), but don't think you did a good/fair job of showing why some of those youtubers were saying what they were saying, because they weren't all angry over a conspiracy theory. Also, when Sweet Baby was talked about, it was hard to believe you were being charitable to both sides when you didn't show much of the actual evidence of what (I can only say some, because I don't watch or pay attention to all of those guys that he showed, and haven't even heard of a lot of them) those guys were specifically talking about, which they (at least the ones I've seen) tend to include in their videos but is missing here. Endymion and Gundam, for example, tend to actually read entire quotes and show what they're specifically talking about. Not saying you have to agree with their opinions on the topic, but they are specific, and they do so often enough for you to at the very least understand (even if you don't always agree) with their takes. It was kind of frustrating to see clips of guys yelling without even knowing what piece of evidence they were using to justify their anger, regardless of whether or not they were correct. Anyone can edit stuff like that for anyone, so that just didn't seem fair. The discussion got sloppy when talking about the youtubers discussing racism, missing the point that the people (like the Gundam example you used) talking about this stuff are pointing out the hypocrisy and racism coming from the people whose whole initiative/narrative depends on them being the victims of it. The whole issue is that they claim to be victims of it without proof, but use that claim to justify being openly racist "in retaliation." Again, I'm not going to try and act like everyone who's on youtube covering these topics are doing so thoroughly or in a mature way, but I also don't think it's fair to try and formulate an argument that lumps all them together as if their behavior and rationale are all exactly the same, especially if some (like Upper Echelon) definitely do research before putting up a video. And again, they also at least show some evidence so that you know why they think what they think. Also, both sides use the word "gaslighting" a lot. What's an actual issue is whether or not they are using the term correctly. Who cares if they're saying it a lot if it's accurate? That's not a point against their argument if that's the case. I'm not going to act like any youtuber or whoever is perfect or infallible. It's possible that individuals have made errors in what they're reporting, whether it's to do with this gamergate stuff or something else in the past. I'm not going to pretend like I'm trying to defend everyone, and I wouldn't even want to try, especially when it comes to malicious behavior. However, while I understand you annoyance with how this drama has unfolded, I don't think you got into the meat of the issue (the ACTUAL issue that's the common denominator of all this drama), but instead skimmed across areas where some people were mad or made weak or anger-fueled-but-not-factually-based points. The "you" and "you all" in the conclusion just seemed too reductive, because, while I do totally get that a lot of people who get all tribal about controversies (which is why I don't like politics in general) and snowball into echo chambers (And there will always be bad apples in every group of people who agree about something on the internet), I think there are enough youtubers at least who've covered this stuff who don't fall into the category of crybullying. Some do, yes, but . Some of the examples you used in this video are of people I'm pretty sure don't fit that description, at the very least in regards to the gamergate drama. I still like your work on this channel, though.

    Everything else set aside what annoys me about all of this in general is how it made me see race. When I was younger I did not care what race characters in movies or games were. Blade was awesome, Morpheus was cool, no thought given beyond that. But with a spotlight being shone so brightly on inclusion, race and diversity, I can't help but always wonder WHY a certain character is a certain race, exacerbated by raceswapping of established characters being done. I do think that all of this divides more than it creates cohesion. There's nothing natural about it. On the other hand, I do see that there are people who still deny others opportunities or validity because of race or gender. I am not like that, so it is easy to not consider that. I'm all for sensible inclusivity, but it shouldn't be done forcefully, with a hammer, whilst antagonizing a large part of the population (mainly white people). I don't have a solution for this, but the way it currently stands and is done, it only creates further strife. And, as people usually do, having things forced on them and antagonizing them will lead to irrational reactions. Instead of trying to impose and forcing others, there should be an effort to realistically discuss matters and find a workable consensus. In an ideal world, that would work, but with the internet and social media completely destroying the ability to discuss and compromise I don't see that working either. Personally, I just wish there would be more genuineness in the world instead of everything being manufactured and twisted to cater to agendas (this goes for all sides). I don't see that changing, though. You could argue there always were narratives being pushed, but I feel that with the internet and its reach today it became much, much worse, giving people the opportunity to grab virtual pitchforks and just form mobs to attack each other. This is not the way this should work, and the division seems to just grow every day, with people gleefully cheering when the other side takes a loss. I wonder how this will turn out eventually. Thank you for a more balanced video that takes all side's points of view into consideration. This is sorely lacking today.

If they don't care about your wallet or livelihood trying to milk your wallet dry - then they most definitely don't care about your sexual and diverse freedoms either... there is somewhat of a trojan horse element to all of this progressive propaganda existing so often games, and Im sure it has something to do with socio/economic long term investment that will rake in more profits from "suckers" in the long run. its no surprise either that the quality of AAA has gone down because their hiring practices have changed and it seems like they favor hiring activists instead of talent. Im sure they pay the new activist devs less too..which all equates to predictable, soul less, noncreative and greedy products in the end that people are tired of seeing being pushed into their favorite IP's of all time.

    The reality is that some games are just shite. Has little to do with diversity or SJWs. I think it has more to do with overblown budgets and publishers and large studios basically forcing their own hands by making games that need to sell absurd amounts of copies to make a profit. And when you need to make a media product that needs to sell millions and millions of copies to break even, it tends to become bland, boring and safe. That's why games suck dong, not because of activists. I'm sure there could be amazing games made with all kinds of representation, but for that to happen those games must come from genuine talent and creativity, not from 500+ man teams scrambling to make the appeal so broad that there's nothing creative left.

Makes one wish Loot Boxes were the Boogie Man again haha! I must say in terms of list of sources, I actually appreciate that it's not just a bunch of links thrown into a pastebin, but that they're actually carefully split up into the parts where they're brought up and as such belong. I personally don't engage or consume much of these kind of things, as in actively browsing stuff e.g. in regards to Gamergate 2, however even though I haven't been actively browsing for it, I have still seen my fair share of posts here and there about it. That being said, I much prefer a more in-depth and well-spoken video essay, such as yours here, especially when it comes to times where it's as if nobody else speaks out on an issue, which you mention in the very end of the video. The Black Rock thing is definitly NOT a conspiracy. You have the CEO Larry Fink openly state, that they want to force behavior in that direction and if companies dont complie they will be financially impacted. QUOTE: " What we are doing internally is, if you dont achieve these lvls of impact (talking about ESG scores of companies), your compensation is going to be impacted financially, ok ?" On top of that there are multiple talks of him, that at least strengthen the claim that Black Rock is trying to use monetary asets to impact culture in certain "progressive" ways.

    He's acc describing internal polices, and "compensation" meaning compensation of blackrock employees being based on targets for diversity. The outward-facing ESG stuff on the other hand _is_ a way they exert pressure on the industry, but ESG is a complete joke anyway. Meta is a top ESG stock, oil companies make "clean" arms that reinvest in the same oil company, and every major fund sees it as an easy way to convince gullible investors to pay a higher premium on their index funds

    Nope. False, the perfect example of how these people lie. You can read the full quote by looking this up, he was talking about trying to get companies to hire more diverse staff. Whether you think thats based or cringe, the only behavior they are talking about there is hiring practices. Not any sort of "Cultural Impact." Most of the stuff about blackrock ESG scores are tied to environmental sustainability, not anything social. The thing here is that this is an investment strategy. Investing in a coal mine in a blue state probably isnt the best idea, pragmatically it isnt whether you are for coal mining or against it. So those are the only behaviors they are tryign to force, internal corporate practices which Blackrock thinks will set them up for consistent growth.

    ESG is not a conspirancy to make the world "woke", is an attempt from companies to avoid government regulations by self-policing and from financial institutions to create new invesment markets people can pour money into, money which companies like Black Rock get to manage and to profit from. Of course there is people who actually care about what ESG stands for and try to make change, but they are few and mostly powerless, often used to make superficial statements that make the company look good as if it cares about things. It could have started with certain intentions, but ESG are no more a facade build to profit from.
