I have watched my share of cult documentaries but this was on another level, I think the audio and videos made it that much disturbing!!! I felt sooo mentally exhausted when they were showing the scenes of the intarigations, I can imagine what those kids felt. I pray that they all heal especially the daughter to Larry.

I kind of agree with you. At the same time, I think the point that people are trying to make by saying it can happen to anyone is: if everyone assumes it can't happen to them, then a lot of them are going to be more susceptible and more likely to fall for it. In other words, some of the solution is for people to be humble and to realize that they can fall for things - maybe not as extreme as this situation, but other forms of it. Also, consider that most of the nation of Germany fell for Hitler, which was super extreme. We humans are far more vulnerable and off track than we are willing to admit, and much of it is because of our pride, aka our egos. Our pride says it can never happen to me, and that greatly increases the probability of it (again - not at the extreme level of this Larry situation, but in milder forms). One of the strengths of Judaism and Christianity is that they emphasize that: A) humans are basically sinful in nature and flawed, yet at the same time B) made in the image of God (love, goodness and truth) and completely deserving of dignity, respect and good treatment. A key benefit of part A is that it makes us realize that we can fall for stuff, and that we're also at high risk of doing stuff ourselves that is wrong ... and that we need to put a lot of effort towards overcoming our sinful nature and flaws .... in partnership and connection with God because it's sort of impossible to do so on our own. Part B balances that out and results in "right self-esteem," which is neither low self-esteem nor high self-esteem. I'd argue that many of the victims had both low self-esteem (as you said), but also high self-esteem ... including assuming that they were smart enough that they'd never fall for anything like this. The solution is "right self-esteem," which is in the middle and combines both parts A and B above. To be clear, many Christians ignore the things above and aren't willing to admit part A above, so they get it wrong; and some Christians are fooling themselves and so forth. But Christianity (its teachings and Jesus) predicts this will occur, and recommends to be on the look-out for it ... because humans are highly flawed and prone to sin, including fooling themselves, being hypocritical and so forth. In a beautiful part of a documentary, a film maker asked Pope Francis who he is, and he said that firstly he is a sinner. This admission, humility and awareness helps him to sin less often. One of the best Bob Dylan lyrics is: "We are idiots babe, it's a wonder that we still know how to breath." Speaking of which, the people who didn't get sucked in by this Larry guy are almost certain to get sucked in by someone else at some point in their life on some front. Larry's allure just didn't match up with the kind of things they'd fall for. An excellent example of people's pride and high self-esteem causing them to think they won't fall for stuff and "it won't happen to me" is that every person who starts drinking alcohol (to the level of being drunk) or smoking pot thinks "I'll never become addicted". Yet it happens to super high numbers of them. Also, everyone things: "This will never lead me to harder stuff like crack, heroin or meth." Yet it happens to a lot of people. Pretty much nobody goes straight to doing meth or heroin - they always start with getting drunk or high on pot. After doing that for enough time, the next level up doesn't seem too much different or worse. At some point, some of them progress to hash or opium or schrooms or coke; and then to the even harder stuff and their lives are ruined. Some jump straight from alcohol / pot to the hard stuff. Many don't go for the hard stuff, but alcohol and pot cause them harm that's between moderate and severe. That is why most of the world's religions (including Buddhism and Islam and Christianity) agree that: you shouldn't do it (getting drunk) at all. But because humans are as flawed as they are, they usually reject this and say "Don't tell me what to do" and "I don't want any rules or restrictions" and "It won't happen to me," and it results in many of them wrecking their lives and the lives of others. To clarify, the teachings of the Bible do not say to never sip on wine, but they do say to not get drunk. The alcohol content of wine at the time of Jesus was fairly low, and much lower than now. Basically, they're saying it's fine to have a glass of wine or two with a meal, but not to get drunk.

Thank you for this episode. My daughter and grandchildren are in a situation being controlled like this right now.,it’s more common than we know.

This series was mind blowing 🤯 and scary as fvck just the way that he was able to manipulate and control those young adults like that. He really had Santos thinking he broke all his stuff and had to pay him back… like what?! 🤯 I hope that Felicia gets back into psychiatry and helps victims of narcissism. She would be a power house psychiatrist because she’s lived it!

Yep . People think “that couldn’t possibly happen to me , I would not accept that treatment” and then they see something like this where bright young adults who are seemingly well adjusted have their entire lives upended and destroyed because Larry was able to identify their weaknesses and the reasons for their low self esteem. He fed on their pain and uncertainty. There is not a person alive without self doubt and worry so anybody could be at risk from someone like Larry Ray

The documentary did a really good job of showing how something so unbelievable and horrible could happen . And shows that this can happen to absolutely anyone . I truly can’t imagine how I would act in their situation.

These young people are so incredibly brave. I'm so glad they got out, and are healing. May Larry rot in hell.

I think many should have been held accountable. You had a grown man sleeping in the dorm house. You don’t feel safe. You could complain but perhaps it wouldn’t have changed anything.

I’m from Italy & I didn’t know anything about this story. As a true crime lover when the series popped up on my tv I just pressed play but I didn’t know what to expect. It escalated fast and I couldn’t believe my ears and eyes while I was watching it, it’s unbelievable and disturbing. It’s alarming that something like this could even be imaginable in these days, but it happened, and the private videos shown were shocking. There’s something missing though, while watching I felt like some pieces and explanations were left behind and I saw that many other viewers have the same opinion. This story left me with a bitter aftertaste.

They don’t know, basically. Dan has said on podcasts that he hasn’t heard anything from her ever since he left - but he also considers her Larry’s first victim. He says she never stood a chance basically, and it’s not clear if she will be able to un-brainwash herself..

My question is, do you think that Larry himself believed his own delusions? The insistence of the mercury poisoning thing is oddly specific that it reminds me of a paranoid delusion rather than a manipulative lie. I mean it definitely WAS a manipulative lie. But it’s really hard to believe that he didn’t also believe his own fabrications. What do you all think?

@@luisvillascan2535 That doesn’t make any sense. There is no poison that would cause any of the behaviors exhibited by the students. Also, that kind of long-term exposure to toxins would have other effects and would show up in blood work, which hasn’t appeared on the medical charts of any of the victims, as far as we know. So… no. He was just delusional and manipulative.

This is freaking creepy. I went to Sarah Lawrence in 2012, school was very small so a lot of these faces look familiar. But again everyone kept to their own circles meaning that me like many of us had no idea what was going on 😳😳

@@mcgheebentle1958I didn't know about the sex cult. but we knew a lot of folks would come over and hang with us from the city. Looking back, It wasn't uncommon for folks to have their older sibling visit or sometimes dealer chill with them in their room. There was a big age range of people who hung around who weren't students. So I guess if I ever did pass the guy, I wouldn't have questioned it. 😳 I would have thought he was someone's hookup or family friend.

How do parents protect their kids from this evil. How do we train them to have a strong mind and a strong sense of self not to be victims of this evil

Having just watched the docuseries, I am interested to tap in to a discussion of experts on this topic. In short, it is difficult to believe that anyone would not come to their senses when handed really abusive treatment, no matter how long the abuser took to lay the groundwork. The one girl saw it quickly and got out, and others knew to steer clear. Were these others vulnerable due to some type of neediness in their backgrounds, personality types (agreeable/disagreeable) or something. ? It makes one wonder -- is this kind of knuckling under to a relentless force, however evil it may show itself to be, common or uncommon in the overall population. Can anyone point to any stats here or studies that are germane?

Anyways, the rerun I just saw mentions things about where women's thighs touch each other. That's F'ing disturbing yo, I've never once in my life thought about such a thing until you brought it up on your show. I find it incredibly concerning that she was a certified doctor. How tf can you be so smart and so dumb at the same time? I hope that she doesn’t practice. I could NEVER trust her judgement.
