This video is the result of a road trip I took to Centralia, PA. What happened in this town is a tragedy which makes for an interesting story. The theory of the firefighters igniting the fire is the most widespread accepted story, but there are other versions. There's not too much left in the town aside from a few homes and cemeteries, just an unbelievably creepy feeling. Certain areas of the town are labeled as restricted zones. Centralia is facing immanent destruction and will no longer be accessible. If you do decide to go, just remember you are not technically allowed to walk around. Normally, if you're quiet and curious, you won't be bothered. But remember take only pictures and leave only footsteps.
Aside from the history of the town and the smoke rising from certain parts of the earth, the scenery is amazingly beautiful. There are also a lot of nearby attractions in neighboring towns relating to the coal mining industry and the history of Centralia.

It's a shame that this all started because of 5 careless firefighters who did not completely extinguish a fire. My dad was born in Ashland which is due south and not far from Centralia and he grew up in Mahanoy City which is east of Centralia. A few years ago, my dad, my uncle and myself went to Centralia and they were telling me stories about Centralia before it became a ghost town but didn't have a camera with me so I didn't get any pictures or video. I am planning a trip with a few friends this spring and I am definitely going to be taking a camera with me this time. I also have read that Centralia is the true life inspiration for the movie Silent Hill.

According to most sources, the cause of the fire was actually hot coals from a stove emptied into the dump by a refuse hauler. The firefighters extinguished the fire on the surface but apparently did not realize (until it was too late) that the fire had ignited the coal seam beneath the dump.

Why would you just flash pictures up like subliminal messaging rather than letting us actually see them in detail? Extremely annoying.

I agree. Rather than using random flashing pictures (some weren't related to Silent Hill in my opinion) to change a scene, a fade out would've been better.

the only thing related to silent hill was some parts of the soundtrack especially the opening scene to the game which is the dramatic music he uses while viewing the smoking ground just before he headed for the graffiti highway the images has nothing to do with the actual game however Centralia is what inspired the game itself & how a simple mine fire that ran out of control turned a town into something you would only ever see in movies which features heavily in the game from map layout to ground detail

Silent Hill never had underground coal fires, nor ashes falling from the sky. The town did have supernatural powers and it snowed out of season. The movie just ruins the story so terribly

I appreciate the making of this video very much. I'm not surprised most people don't know about this story. People just might get too pissed off and do something good for their community.
Good stuff man, I enjoyed the footage. As a Silent Hill game fan, the music was a good touch.
What a place and what a story, thanks for your efforts, great video.
Great video. Interesting choice of music. Some from the movie Requiem for a Dream. and of course Silent Hill.
this a very good, well put together video. very impressive
Excellent video
The video editor took some "creative license" using photos of people and things unrelated to Centralia as a spliced-in interjection for dramatic effect. As for Centralia itself, there is not much there left to behold. I visited their this afternoon, and the deep snow made it hard to see anything of interest, it really isn't THAT spectacular or haunting as this video might suggest. It is poignant history.
You're welcome, and thanks for posting this interesting and informative video.

totally enjoyed this - one very creepy place, we had a bush fire totally wipe out a hole town here in Australia and end effects were much the same as Centralia, but the people here are allowed to rebuild there lives. also you had a really good choice of music. thanks for making this
Dad was always such a drag
This is the first I've seen this video and I love it! I got to see Centralia in around 2006 I believe, when some people still lived there. There was like 6 inches of snow on the roofs of houses and maybe an inch on the grass and none on the streets due to the heat. Just an amazing experience
awesome!!! i hope i can go see it soon when u were there was there anything like paranormal cuz it would seem that way to me but then i like weird stuff
Lots of pretty pictures, thanks, but you didn't give ANY history on this. What year did all this happen? I thank you for identifying the music. I always wanted to know where that third track came from. It is from Requiem for a Dream. (cleaning)

Oh True LOL I subscribed 2 your channel btw
My friend sitting here watching this with me for the last 10 minutes of this wanted me to reply for him he said"T HIS WAS VERY INFORMATIVE, and good footage"
Guys this isn't fake, and it isn't a creepypasta. Centralia is a real town in Pennsylvania, about and hour west of Allentown. And everything in the narration is completely true. Google it. I live close to it.
Hi great video but I was just wandering what the song was as they were entering centralia after all the text. I have check the description but I can't find what song it was. Thanks
wow! truly amazing.
Oh and thanks for the video. I don't see, why some viewers thought it was supposed to be Halloween-ish...I like the music - it goes with the story. I think it's made very tastefully considering the situation...:-(.
I've played the games, seen the movies, but this is really interesting. Just a tip maybe a little less film of the driving time? The pictures are interesting and maybe you could've extended those viewing times by several seconds so the viewer can get a good look. (I had to pause it because I was super interested in the map) The antique coloring and music gave it a really nice touch.
My grandmother grew up in the nearby town of Shamokin, so I'm very familiar with this part of Pennsylvania. I remember when Centralia was a thriving town during my childhood in the 70s. Thanks for posting!
There was an hour segment on the TV one day about all of this. History is one of my favorite general topics... Shows like Dark Matters and Mysteries at the Museum reveal quite a strange portrait of the true world we live in. The science channel and history showed, in great detail, the hows and whys of it all, it showed very in depth maps of the areas known to be burning, acknowledged sinkholes and far more even a large scale room size diagram mapping the area and the various temperatures and hazards and tracking the inferno still. It was jaw dropping to say the very least. I enjoyed seeing the video as you traveled through town. This certainly left an impression and while I'm always a student of life, actually going there hasn't been a real possibility and, to be entirely honest, it's terrifying. I appreciated your quest and documentation. Check out the History and Science channels for the program availability to see the full details of this. The implications and scope of this is a lesson hard learned. And for future generations, this is one not wise to tuck away in a book to collect dust. Ignoring it or disbelief certainly won't change anything. There's NO known estimation for when the fuel would be viably consumed to finally quench this fire and allow use of the land in the safest of living and working conditions. This whole matter is a massive fatal error in our modern history. A place and ongoing event that can't be overlooked or shorted or dismissed. This video and imagery fully shows how deep this lesson runs. No pun intended. I liked the primary music very much. Thanks for that . And the ending disclaimer, much appreciated.
The music made it really Creepy. Great video! I never heard of this town until I saw it on a show called: "Real Fear; the story behind the movies." Scared the crap out of me. Centralia was the last story. I live in Monroe County. I am worried about the fact that, fires spread. I don't want anything to happen to me. It probably won't though. I would like to see Centralia someday but I am scared. I would like to go if a group of my friends wanted to go. Anyway, I loved your video.
Ahhh, I see ^.^ Well glad you enjoyed your visit here. :D
Regardless of what everyone else is talkin bout I thought this video was really cool! Makes me wanna go and visit just to experience the errieness for myself... Thanks
hehe I'm watching this whilst also watching the Silent Hill movie on tv Thanks for uploading Silent Hill 4ever
i like how you added the silent hill monsters
hey wasnt gonna watch movie but now kinda curious so film ya made was awesome.
I could not believe there was an actual town that inspired the film "Silent Hill " so very Interesting...!!! I liked this video, Centralia Pennsylvania is exactly 712 miles from my home in North Georgia.
Goddamn, this video was my childhood. Miss those times. Been so long since I watched this video. Fucking nostalgic
Around 2006, my dad got Silent Hill: Homecoming. I immediately fell in love with it. Then I watched the movies and now I'm totally obsessed. Watching this video inspired me to go to Centralia. It fascinates me how deep the fire is and how it got there. Thanks.
i didnt see the films or play the video, so i watched it on its own merit. since you said at the end it was your impression of centralia. some people dont get artwork. the fast motion and the lack of color sets the feeling really well. like nervous apprehension and strange. there are a gangload of artworks that are not meant to entertain, but to communicate something. so i would have to say this is a very well done video. there is more. i dont know if you altered the video other than inserted stills and editing. at the 10 minute mark there is a very unusual shadow that lasts about 3 or 4 seconds, i slowed it to 1 quarter speed. it looks like a shadow of someone or something walking up beside a car or pickup, but way to small to be coming from behind you. also another one maybe 20 seconds after that to your right, could have been an assistant. did you or anybody else notice these. very, very strange

look at 5:04 point... on your left it looks like a lil girl looking up at the house right after the church, as he just gets to the stairs this " girl" disappears . It's an illusion. That maybe what you have experienced :) ok went to the 10min mark,it is his shadow. Also the one to the right that you explained could very well be a shadow of someone he brought with him.. It"s interesting how the mind can play tricks on you huh. pretty neat and can be scary for some. hope that helps..GOOD EYE THOUGH...
I looked forward to watching this video, but it was a poorly edited attempt at making an abandoned town into a horror story. I have been to Centralia after the town was evacuated, and many years before this video was made. Although it was a stark reminder of how we, as humans, can unleash unforeseen consequences, it is hardly haunted. Even then (circa 1998), all of the houses in Centralia proper were demolished, with the only truly interesting parts of town being the heaving highway, with its spewing smoke and the dump, with the same smoke like a fog. It was interesting, but in no way scary....just a human caused event in progress....like a tire fire that burns for 60 years......hardly anything to be afraid of in a visceral sense.

it was a very informative video. but difficult to watch because of having to pause it to read the information and the way to speedy flashing of photos and maps. I hope at some point you remake it or at least in future videos speak the information and don't flash things so quickly, I felt I missed out on a lot of important info because of it and a third of the way in it gave me a terrible headache. I am looking forward to future videos. thank you.

I'm from the area. There is a seam of coal 40' thick that runs through the area. Someone set an open dump on fire and the wind caught it. Kodiak came in and wanted a guarantee on the amount of coal they would get if they dug the seam out. They were turned down. There is a bigger fire above and below the City of Shamokin and Coal Township.
wow, thank u!
drove around there once when i was doing long hauls.lots have changed but loved the music the pop up pic was great....lol
The story seems more like a series of unfortunate events rather than a ghost story
great soundtrack and black&White ambient. great job at all.
I used to pass through Centraila twice a year to visit my mother-inlaw in Sinking Spring, PA (short cut) every year and when the church was still there I thought it errie. When I saw Silent Hill I knew where it was based on AND where the idea came from. A very creepy place.
pretty legit video I love Silent Hill and the fact that it's based on a actual place.
Nice video. My Brother and I were there today. I wish we had had a tour guide. we were not really able to find the smoldering areas. We found the road and went behind the odd fellows cemetery, but could not find any warm areas, or smoking areas. Maybe I need to go back in the winter. Anyway very nice video. i don't know much about silent hill, but Centralia was cool.
excelente colega, estuvo muy bueno el video, saludos desde Chile :)
was silent hill shot here? or they made it somewhere else?
The music sounds like "started from the bottom now we here" lol
Yeah, I was reading up on it, the mines are WAY bigger than I originally thought. The Centralia fire spread a few miles south and caused the town of Byrnesville to be officially abandoned in 1996. Or at least that's when the last house was torn down. I'm surprised the fire isn't more widely known about, since it's still going on, and will be for quite some time.
awesome!! i was hoping to read a video instead of making things easier!! thanks!!
It's downright chilling!!
I visit this place a lot and it's truly sad.
i don't understand how can it still come out smoke from the ground?
ok awesome i will check in next week then :D
You're most welcome! I've rated it and will subscribe - :)
what is the music that starts at 3:02? it seems strangely familiar....
This is really unbelievable. I found out about Centralia just last week. My uncle was driving a truck through PA and his directions took him right through Centralia. It's sad that the town is gone. But the story behind the fire is amazing.
What song is playing as far as background music goes??
Thanks for the tour.. It gave me chill.. . 5:35 is that where they found Cherryl Mason baby?
how do i find this exact version of Promise by Akira??
I actually live about two hours away from Centralia. Maybe I'll take a trip there someday.
There's another place like this in pa, a little town called crabtree but people still live there, if you drive by where the sign all about the fire is in the winter the ground will be steaming . Its actually really cool
In 1962, a fire started in a mine beneath the town and ultimately led to the town being almost entirely abandoned. There is some disagreement over the specific event which triggered the fire. David DeKok, after studying available local and state government documents and interviewing former borough council members, argues in Unseen Danger and its successor edition, Fire Underground: The Ongoing Tragedy of the Centralia Mine Fire, that in May 1962, the Centralia Borough Council hired five members of the volunteer fire company to clean up the town landfill, located in an abandoned strip-mine pit next to the Odd Fellows Cemetery. This had been done prior to Memorial Day in previous years, when the landfill was in a different location. On May 27, 1962, the firefighters, as they had in the past, set the dump on fire and let it burn for some time. Unlike in previous years, however, the fire was not fully extinguished. An unsealed opening in the pit allowed the fire to enter the labyrinth of abandoned coal mines beneath Centralia. (From Wikipedia)
The Matsuo Ghost Mine in my opinion is the real Silent Hill, because it got the fog and every thing, now it may not have the underground burning thing but it my opinion it is more Silent Hill then this, also its in Japan :3

No, I agree, it has its thick layer of fog, And The Centralia undergorund Mine is only from the movie, it has nothing to do with the games, Although Matsuo was just a small village for miners, it is still closer to Silent Hill than this. Imagine if Matsuo was a proper town though, now that would be creepier.

There are some really great wooden roller coasters only about 30 minutes away from Centralia. They have a very interesting display of some old mining helmets used for rescue combined with some very shiny coal jewelry.
What's the name of the song at 7:30?? I really need to know so someone please respond
What is the music used in this?
Xln't vid. Luv the "artsy fartsy" FX. Pix are creepy too. I was expecting no snow on the ground in Centralia.
This isn't "the real Silent Hill". The first movie took inspiration from Centralia. The games had nothing to do with it. They had the town look American-esk, but never used Centralia as an inspiration.
they say beauty is in the eye of the beholder and i personally find Pennsylvania to be a very beautiful state with a good portion of the state untouched or moderanized since the sixties when the industry and money left most of the state when i go and visit my dads home town it really makes me feel like im in a george romero movie
Nice music pick anyway
