I agree with everything she's saying but I also think there are parts of our society that have been specifically designed to prevent us from resting in the way she's talking about. Tired people are compliant people.

I think you're truly spot on with this, when you're exhausted all the time the apathy creeps in, how do you fight for any kind of change when getting groceries feels like an impossible chore?

I disagree that tired people are compliant people… I’m physically and emotionally tired all the time, for various reasons … but I assure you … I am an extremely strong person in my opinions and expression and even though I am overwhelmed by other’s expectations in me.. I always find the strength to rise above any comments… and face problems rather than submitting to them… it’s easy to generalise … we are all so very individual as humans ..
I have noticed this conversation becoming more prominent these days. We are finally realizing this mad cycle of living to work, with no real time for actual rest and small moments of joy is leading to such wide spread suffering.
I watched this a month or so ago and have been making a point of ‘resting’ more during my day. It has really made a difference and given me permission to meet my body’s needs throughout the day. Came back to try and get my head around all the different kinds of rest

How do you rest during the day when you have to work? Employers are extending working hours to 14hrs in some places. Dr's are expected to be working 24hr shifts..
This is why I like Ted talks, they bring people with something real and important to say.

I love seeing this right now, with all this virus stuff I just can't sleep these days.
She’s right!! I distance from negative family and people who are not positive
This message is becoming more and more vital as we start to question what it means to have a quality of life. I feel like the pandemic has put this into the spotlight.
Yes! Just before watching this I was telling my wife that I think society has confused rest and sleep and that I think there are probably different types of rest for different stressors. Then I came across this video just a few minutes later. Thank you!
I'm here for this. For too long we have been living in a culture that encourages burn out. If we don't take the time to set boundaries and rest, we will continue this awful cycle.
I find it really interesting that most peoples ideas of unwinding include things that just make them more exhausted.

I need all these types of rest all the time! I lost everything to burnout several years ago and it's changed my life completely. I'm now so super wary of pushing myself and being around people is exhausting! But I still struggle to be OK with just "being" and not "producing". The societal messaging is very persistent!
Just taping into this from a bible study I was doing about entering into His rest. This is so interesting and as a Health & Wellness Coach I believe this is something amazing I can share with my clients. Thank you for this eye-opening conversation on the 7 Types of Rest.

This is such a good argument for why self-care is so important.
A good tip is also to understand our circadian rhythm. Simply turning off the lights is also very good for our sleep.
YES! We need to share this more and more, in a world where we are told that we will fail unless we strive, we need to be told that we are human and have human needs in order to achieve. If we do not rest, we aren’t living.

As an empath with its associated issues of exhaustion this talk casts light on sleep deprivation. A notepad really works on nights my mind won't turn off. A mental antidote to your mind tossing and turning.

I'm surprised that she didn't mention physical activities. It can help a lot to activate our body to relax our minds
Saundra, this is so incredibly on point. I am sharing this as my circle is one prone to burnt out and this is EXACTLY why.
Amazing talk, definitely something more people need to be aware of.
What an important message this is. Especially at a time when we are redefining what is important in one's life.
Love this, great talk!
Really good info here, really helps.
Great talk Saundra, it's definitely time we start re-thinking what relaxation looks like.👍
This was actually such an informative and useful talk! I can't wait to start identifying where I used up the most energy in my day.
Brilliant! It's time for a rest revolution!
Thank you!
That's the talk to which I come back from time to time to remind myself of the right approach to rest and multiplicity of it. I think everyone should do it. Thank you for sharing this knowledge with us!
Brilliant talk!
100% true. We can’t solve the chronic fatigue by just sleeping. The emotion can’t sleep , it requires some deep correction
This is a very smart TED, if you are tired watch this!!!
A great TEDx talk. Thank you very much.
She's a wonderful speaker. This is so good.
Excellent summary of different kinds of rest. So important to make time for this.
Very thought provoking.
thank you so much for this.
Brilliant Saundra! I have been trying to unlearn such myths for a while now and it is really difficult to remind myself rest if productive.
I had never thought about it like this and it is so true!!!
This is the most inspirational and reality testing talk I have heard in a long time. I will be referring to Dr. Dalton-Smith in my sessions. Thank you Dr. Dalton-Smith!
I so agree with you! Thanks for sharing this very useful and informative presentation!
I saw this talk a few months back and it really changed the way I think about 'rest' - have come back to find the link as I was talking about it with some co-workers who were very intrigued. It's surprising how much we don't know about this stuff!
Bookmarking. I need this reminder often

This is a very important talk. Thank you!
This talk def opened up my eyes to why I wake up sometimes feeling exhausted after sleeping a full night. Especially if I have weird bizarre dreams, which I usually do. Technology and always having our phone at our disposal for usage, has its pros and cons but my opinion is there are more cons…one of main reasons I unplugged from the major social media platforms. Just couldn’t do it!
I am refreshed by the notion we are heading towards - that replenishing our mind, body and spirit is just as important as being productive.
lovely, sleep is so important.
Rest provides time for reflection and recouping. I am so glad that we are finally starting to see the importance of taking time out for ourselves. It's the only hope of us processing.
Mmmmmm so interesting!! I'd genuinely never thought about or heard anything like this before!
I really needed to hear this right now, there has been TOO MUCH going on.
I feel so seen in so many aspects. Amazing, concise speaker. I feel like I'm speaking to the madame president!
What a lovely speaker. This is so informative and interesting.
Wow this is very informative
Excellent presentation!
Amazing !!!
This is so interesting. I am glad I am learning about this topic.
I'm watching this on the way to my job in a place that is literally designed for sensory overload. Will definitely be taking the time to close my eyes for a few minutes throughout the day, fingers crossed it works!
Outstanding talk, and all points, very effective for those suffering from "Fatigue."

This is me every day tired. Love this talk.
I'll be sharing this in hopes those who still judge me for not taking part in this hyper-critical and detrimental conditioning.
I always thought my sleep never felt restful because of circadian rhythm was off but this makes a lot of sense.
'sleep and rest are not the same thing' - this is such an obvious statement but I've actually never considered this
Yup, exhausting relationships are what knock me out... but I see without the proper time to rest and reflect instead of just avoiding and keeping on that I play a big role in my burn out.
Oh I am watching this tonight again before bed.

Good to teach kids too.
Good one
