Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I received the new Prismacolor Amethyst and Orchid. Did they change? What is different and what is the same? Should you run out to find the old Lilac and Lavender? Find out now

You see it yourself. They are such close matches. The panic is more in the watercolor community. They are struggling. We are fine. Nobody would have noticed.

Anything in the purple family drives me crazy because it makes mud so fast. It's always too gray for my liking. I am constantly grabbing Derwent and Lyra purples because I don't have problems with layering oils, just blending waxy ones. I am not fond of that Orchid color but I will have to play with it. I have about four lavender prima pencils though to work through first, its going to be a while.

Purple is muddy because it's secondary. This means anything you add to it will create mud if it contains yellow or a yellow undertone.

My set of Prismas didn't have the the old or the new colors, so I bought what Lindsay (frugal crafter) suggested as good alternatives; Cezanne's Periwinkle 027 to replace lilac, and. Arteza's A062 or A 408 depending how old the set is, to replace Prisma's orchid. There are other colors too that were close if you'd like to see if you already own something that closely resembles the missing Prisma colors. I'm new to coloring, and Prismas was my only set so I didn't want to miss out on any shades of purple!

Thank you Lori, I was worried as Lilac was the first color I actually used up (purples and greens go fast in my house). Still feel like a newbie in the coloring world and I always appreciate your insight.

It doesn't really seem like it was a secret for other companies. The info was right out there. No digging necessary. Prismacolor was the only company that made it a thing. As you can see, it wasn't a very big deal

@@ColorMyWorld i definately don't see any budget brands saying anything. It's not like pencil companies actually tell us what pigments they use. Though sometimes for fun I wish they would lol. I love knowing the pigments that's in the supplies I'm using.

@@After40Art No they wouldn't say anything because this happens all the time for them. Have you seen my video on the China Manufacturing of pencils? If not you would probably find it interesting. I did it around 2 years ago. If you can't find it, I'll look it up.

I am not sure if it was Holbein or Winston & Newton said it was because of the automotive industry selling less red cars and it's not affordable anymore to just produce the pigment for the artist community. If you look deep into the pigment you can almost see it in the old prisma colors. I am almost 100% sure that's the reason they changed. The thing is they changed so little there was no need for a name change. They have made much bigger changes in the past. It's also interesting because it was around the same time they started producing PR206 that they came out with the Prismacolors too. Prisma must be lost without it.

There is a brilliance that the Prismacolors have that the bargain brands don't, but honestly once a pencil is blended up, nobody will be able to tell the difference. Anyways, the new colors will be easily available shortly and nobody will have any problem.

Hi, I'm mostly a hobby watercolor artist and a total pigment nerd. So last fall there were sadly a few pigments that were discontinued by the automobile industry and we arty folk have to live with this decision because our market just isn't big enough for the pigment producer. The good thing with PR 206 is that PR 179 Perylene Maroon is very similar than the Quinacridone (206) one. Both have a reddish and a brownish version and Winsor and Newton professional watercolors have already replaced this pigment in their colors (Permanent alizarin crimson has the red version and brown madder the brown version). I and others have both and they look so similar that it's really hard to tell them apart. So I think for all colored pencil users that pencils containing PR206 can probably be replaced similar so that the difference is not that much. Sad for us watercolor users is the other Quinacridone pigment being discontinued the same time PO 48 Quinacridone burnt orange. It's only one of two really transparent oranges and the only one I know which is a transparent, earthy and highly lightfast pigment. I love both pigments very much, but at least one of them is easily replaced. I just started using colored pencils so I have no clue if PO 48 is being used there as well or PR 168 which is also a very beautiful red which is being discontinued.

Pigment is pigment. All means of art supplies use the same ones. It's the binders and solvents that make the difference. Yes, I feel bad for the water color artists. The slight bit of difference is huge to them. With colored pencils, you can substitute and create other colors. Due to sheerness of watercolors the cleaner the colors the better. Welcome I love anther coloraphile I think I just made that name up.

@@ColorMyWorld Yes, but what I meant is that not all pigments are used in every medium. Some pigments don't work well with gum arabic, others not with oil or acrylic etc. And because I just started with colored pencils I just don't know if those two pigments i mentioned are used in colored pencils or not. Is there some kind of database where you can look up the pigments in the pencils?

@@arsinoe8336 We wish. It seems Prisma guards their secrets. It's different with pencils. I make my own watercolors so knowing about pigments is important. People don't make their pencils. We look for what we call pencil comps. Those comps are basically eyeballed.

@@ColorMyWorld That's really too bad 😔 then we can't know at all what is in the pencils and which pencils/ colors will be the ones containing discontinued pigments. I've only searched for Faber Castell Polychromos pigment information so far, but couldn't find any. Don't understand honestly why you get the information which pigments are in a tube of watercolor/ oil or acrylic paints but not for colored pencils. But sadly we can't change that. Thank you very much for answering and so fast as well 💜 I really appreciate that

@@arsinoe8336 I guess it doesn't make as much difference for colored pencils. Since they don't expire or go bad (you can keep them 100 years) that info isn't really that important. Pencils also go by common names much like mattresses. The same color will be a different name from company to company and it's often not the accepted universal color.

I agree 100%. They are much more muted. That's not a bad thing, but I get what you are saying. That brightness is what the watercolor community is having a hard time replacing it. For them, clean colors are very important. It can make or break a picture.
