    #askeck Sup Justin, love the vid. My question is; was there another MC-80 at the battle of Endor that the DS2 shot down with its superlaser? I can't tell if it was Home One (maybe a repurposed shot with the same model) or just one of the Mon Calamari Star Cruisers (didn't have the wings though). Thx bud and congratz on the 2nd trench run with the wifey. #kisses

    2 questions about TROJ: How was Luke able to walk through the death star without being stopped? Were the other people too busy to care? Was he not viewed as a rebel, and instead a "guest" of the Emperor? And 2), where does the A-wing get damaged firstly? I always thought it was along the city-scape of the Executor, but it looks like the A-wing is flying down into the cockpit, and you can just barely see something flying down from the mon cal cruiser, which seems odd because the x-wing behind it was taken out by a green laser, like from an imperial vessel. Is there any info on that?

    The truth is this was a script decision. It would be ridiculous for the SSD to move closer to the DS as they would have had to go thru the entire rebel fleet to do so. Remember the imperials came up behind the rebels to pin them between them and the DS. The admiral himself ordered “hold here”. They were not going to move in for fear of getting in the way of the DS super weapon

Someone even pointed out if it was gravity that brought it down, it should have went down equally with a tilt towards the engines since they're the heaviest, but instead it went nose diving, which means they were in some sort of tactical maneuver listing a certain way RIGHT when the A-Wing hit the bridge, and killed the, uh, Ill simply call him the driver. Its kinda like those cliche moments where someone dies while driving something, then their steering wheel gets caught and the vehicle just veers to that direction non-stop.

    @@azazaz4627 I disagree. Piett proved in both movies he lacked the adaptivity or the level headedness to achieve victory. Moving the executor into the gravity well of the death star was foolish. Such a move only protects from capital ships. Time and again imperial officers underestimate the role of single seat fighters! And right at the end Piett panicks. What does he do, he orders to intensify the forward point defence. The time it takes to reroute the power and re-angle the point defense was too long and allowed the A-wing to slip through the flak screen and run the trench superstructure. The second officer says as much in his last words. The moment the bridge deflector failed Piett should have ordered transfer to the secondary bridge. But because he panicked and trusted too much on the firepower of his ship. 300,000 people lost there lives.

    It's always bugged me how some people never seemed to notice Ackbar's orders to focus firepower on the Executor. Or how close all those Rebel warships were to it that you can see out the Executor's bridge. The Emperor is the sole cause of the Empire's downfall. If he wasn't so keen on putting on show and allowed the Star Destroyers and the Executor to actually engage Rebel ships, they probably wouldn't have been overwhelmed.

    Its one thing what is said, but its another thing that thet Executor looks so pristine when its gowing down. And it just doesn't make sense that the basic functions of a ship of this size would in any way be affected by the loss of the bridge. Was there an officer on the lower decks panicking "The bridge is gone! I've no idea what to do now! Lets point the nose of the ship straight down, I think thats what they would have wanted me to do!" This whole scene would have made a lot more sense if we had seen, for example, battle damage to the engines instead of the bridge hit.

  • @d_valroth

    @d_valroth

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@MareTranquil Part of that is the technology of the time. They spent seven weeks working almost 24/7 to get the Executor built. I don't think anyone on the SFX team was in a hurry to destroy or damage that model. Note how unlike a lot of other craft, they don't actually use charges to blow up the Executor, they just shoot a (fairly obvious) flame jet up out of the surface between it and the camera. Also none of the ships present accrue any sort of visible battle damage in the wide shots. The scene was complicated enough to work out as it was. Most of the ships were also composited repeatedly. There was only one full detail ISD, all close shots are that single model, so they had to be careful what they did to it. There are similarly only a handful of actual Mon Cal ships, they're just photographed from multiple angles and layered into the scene to flesh out the fleet. That's where we got the Tector, when they had to use an alternate model to layer two ISDs in a single shot, and somebody forgot to make sure the bottom wasn't visible.

  • @MareTranquil

    @MareTranquil

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@d_valroth First of all, The Wrath of Khan had been made one year earlier, so "the technology of the time" did certainly allow for showing damage on spaceships. Secondly, if they were able to do this nice close-up shot of the damaged bridge, why not also use this for just one other shot somewhere else on the ship? Or, maybe, INSTEAD of the bridge shot? Thridly, if you're writing a scene that you can't or don't want put into your movie, then something has gone wrong. But most importantly, this is what we see: "Concentrate fire on this SSD" -> Fighters destroy shield generator -> "We've lost bridge deflector shields" -> "Concentrate forward firepower" -> Fighter crashes -> Explosion on bridge -> SSD, with visible damage to the bridge only, falls out of the sky. Now, if this was footage discovered by an archeologist, then you could certainly argue that these things are not connected to each other, and that you just dont have found any footage of the important things. And there seems to be a lot of this kind of thinking going on in the Star Wars fanbase. But this is a movie, not some found footage, and what you decide to show or not show has meaning. Its like some fans simply cannot accept that "I hope not too many people think about this" might have been a part of George Lucas' mindset for certain aspects of these movies.

  • @d_valroth

    @d_valroth

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@MareTranquil I didn't say it wasn't possible, I said they were unwilling to do it. The Miranda-class model was made specifically for Wrath, and it was one of only two ships present in the entire battle sequence. It was easy to say "okay, we've shot all the scenes for this phase of the battle, now we'll damage both ship models and shoot the next" and so on. They could have damaged or destroyed the physical Executor model. They did not. It's alive and well today. Also, "I hope people don't think about this" sums up the entire Star Wars franchise. Parsecs are not a unit of time. Lightspeed will not get you across the galaxy in a week. Destroyers are one of the smallest navel vessels, not the biggest. Space generally requires thrusters facing in more than one direction. The EU is one massive fix fic that explains away all sorts of inaccurate or illogical statements. The novelization of RotJ even realizes that scene has issues and tries to add some stuff you just didn't see because it was off camera. Honestly, why Lucas didn't fix that instead of ruining Jabaa's palace in the special edition is beyond me. Edit: To be more clear, the technology they had did not allow for compelling CG or digital compositing, so they couldn't really fake damage to the Executor beyond the composited flames from the bridge and engine. Making it look good would require actually damaging the model, which they seemed very opposed to since there was no taking it back if any other footage turned out to need a reshoot.

    This is my interpretation (using pre-NC reckoning). The Executor was under sustained fire from the Rebel Fleet, harried by starfighters. They began maneuvering closer to the DS2 to gain assistance from its Turbo Lasers and hoping the Rebels wouldn’t want to move closer to the station. The sensor dome (that’s what the EU classified it as) was destroyed which overloaded the bridge deflector shields temporarily. Piett ordered forward point defense fire intensified to protect the bridge while they were being restored. Before that could happen, Green Leader was hit, causing a surge of power to his engines which propelled him too close to the command tower. Seeing no alternative Green Leader kamikazied the bridge. The crew on the secondary bridge didn’t expect their involvement in the actual command of the ship, so they weren’t on the ball when the bridge was destroyed. The engines were damaged around the same time, causing a loss of attitude control which allowed the ship to be pulled down by the DS2’s gravity. Before the secondary crew could get full control of the ship, the Executor was already in a dive, it’s mass was too much for the crippled engines to arrest even at full reverse thrust, and it impacted the station.

    So, essentially, Executor's destruction was a "death by thousand cuts", both in Legends and New Continuity, and the A-wing was just the final blow, something the already overtaxed damage control system was unable to cope with... also, I vaguely remember that in Legends, there was something about the nature of A-wing's engines and fuel that made the ship go BOOM in a spectacular way, and the way the effect went, the blast didn't just took the command deck, but blew quite a large hole in the front of the command tower, and thus I wonder what exactly went down with it... Maybe the drift towards Death Star wasn't as much of a case of gravity but rather engines or controls (thrusters, etheric steering, whatever) going haywire because of death throes of primary steering components (damaged/destroyed in this massive explosion, burned from power surge, there could have been many reasons) coupled with previous extensive damage...

The secondary bridge SHOULD have corrected for it, but it looks like they never gained control of the ship. I don't know if that was also because of the A-wing ram or other damage. Of course, that would have even larger implications for the universe as a whole, but it migt be already the case in lore... in NJO: Destiny's Way, Vergere used A-wing in a suicide run against Yuuzhan Vong at Ebaq 9 and the resulting crater was radioactive for days...

    The gravitational force of the Death Star wasn't even remotely strong enough to pull the SSD down that fast. It would need the mass of something like a star or bigger to make it move that fast relative to it's size. The more logical argument is the SSD's engines went out of whack and caused it to crash into the Death Star. Personally, I'd love to see an official scene/summary of rebel teams/sabotage using some of the Death Star's own weapons against some Imperial targets. And when the opportunity presented itself, it was in fact Death Star tractor beams that pulled the SSD to destruction, destroying the flagship and hitting the DS a serious blow as well.

  • @lorzon

    @lorzon

    I disagree. The DS2 had several gravity generators producing at least 1 standard G. So while the external effects wouldn't be as extreme as you get with natural gravity fields, it was probably widespread enough to act as a navigation hazard. And if you have a ship with multiple damaged engines suddenly lose its primary helm and experienced helm officers, there obviously wasn't time for the backup systems to cut in before the fall into the DS2 was unrecoverable.

    The Executer was in the middle of a rapid battle maneuver. In the expanded universe it says so and in the movie you can see it dropping as Admiral Akbar orders the attack. IF the ship was pulling a sharp maneuver to avoid damage to its bridge and it suddenly lost control (even temporarily) it could easily crash in to an object as large as the Death Star. Watch the part where Akbar orders a full attack- the SSD is dropping and trying to get away. look at 2:30 on the video shown. offical head cannon: when Executer started taking damage it started to withdraw- when it lost its bridge deflector shields the helms men started to maneuver the ship's bridge away from the MC-80s (scene at 2:43) that were attacking however when the bridge was knocked out the ship lost control before its auxiliary control could correct the mistake. By the time they could take control it was "to late"

  • @Kurayamiblack

    Maybe the engines were still engaged in an attempt to stabilize the ship but it was losing that battle to the Death Star's gravity and once the ship was pointing directly at the Death Star, the active main engines ended up just accelerating the ship into the surface which is why it was going that fast when it hit. By the time they cut the engines, they'd already be coasting pretty fast into the "ground" just like a plane heading full throttle toward earth for even 2 seconds and then cutting engines would still be completely screwed without a course correction.

  • @al866

    @al866

    I agree. Also if it had been gravity it wouldn't have pulled nose first. Planes on earth crash nose first because of aerodynamics which isnt a thing here. Gravity should have pulled the whole thing down equally with a list towards the engines since that's probably the heaviest part. So I agree the destruction of the bridge prob caused it to steer out of control into the death star II.

    I could swear there was an EU source which said the engines engaged as a result of the destruction of the primary bridge, and by the time the battle bridge commander got them turned off, it was too late to pull up. Of course if it's EU it's also easy to say that IG-88 did it. He had the tech specs of both Executor and DS2, and was in the process of hijacking DS2.

This is shortly after the first battle that Joruus C'baoth used his force powers to control the minds of the fighter pilots etc. This gave them much greater efficiency. The Emperor was so distracted with trying to bring Luke to the dark side, that his control slipped, thus allowing the rebels to defeat the Executor. Thrawn knew this and said as much to Pellaeon, also stating that if he'd been in charge, the battle would have gone much differently. "Then how do you explain the last minute TIE fighter incompetence?" I think this was the actual reason that A-wing was able to do what it did. What do you think?

The crippled Executor's crew was unable to get to the auxiliary controls in time to prevent it from augering into the second Death Star and the Executor was subsequently destroyed on impact and there was tremendous damage done to the second Death Star's hull as a result of this. So, it was more or less the design of the A-Wing that destroyed the Executor.

For the Executor, the bridge's shields were knocked out (spheres), before this could be elevated, a ship rammed it. This disrupted the ship's steering right next to the one manmade/alienmade structure bigger than it. Before a secondary bridge could come online (only a few seconds had passed), it hit the DS2. It's like if a driver passed out on the highway, and veers the car into a semi before the shotgun riding passenger can grab the wheel.

    This is a long time misnomer. And it being in reference books means nothing since they don't even have the correct sizes for Executor and Home One. Pablo measured the actual physical model against the mini Star Destroyer model built to scale to the Executor and it comes out to 13km. Home One is supposed to be twice the length of a Star Destroyer. Those are not shield generators but sensor globes, clearly inspired by Naval RADOMES. Check out this page - www.theforce.net/swtc/towers.html#globes Ackbar orders a bombardment which overloads the shields. The sensor globe is destroyed to indicate the shields have fallen. Also it would make no sense to place shield generators externally a ship on such exposed devices that could be easily destroyed. And why would the shield generators themselves not be shielded? Also I am glad that Eckhart got this right. But your basic idea is correct I think. No control of the ship. Also there are GIANT FLAMES coming out of the engines that a lot of people seemed to miss, that Eckhart pointed out here as well, so clearly they were damaged too.

    The issue being ignored here is simple. we are told through dialogue the entire trilogy, that Star Destroyers are fearsome weapons, a single Star Destroyer is enough to cause panic, a FLEET of them headed by the Executor, is akin to the entire US Navy's 6th fleet. "We won't last long against those star destroyers" says Lando, again voicing the fear, and intimidation of the ships. Yet, when the vastly outnumbered rebel fleet do engage the superior Imperial fleet, with a few of their capital ships knocked out by the Death Stra...they, umm, win...easily...we see the rebel fleet mostly intact after the Death Star explodes... So I don't much care for hand waving bullcrap trying to explain how the VASTLY outgunned out manoeuvred, and outplayed rebels who fell right into the Imperial trap defeated the largest and most powerful(by far!) Imperial ship whilst simultaneously escaping virtually unscathed. Even if the Death Star was destroyed, the massive Imperial fleet should have destroyed the rebels utterly. Why do people think concentrating firepower is some brilliant strategy, its OBVIOUS that's what you do, and exactly what the Imperial Navy would have been doing as soon as the Emporer's surprise Death Star shot destroyed a capital ship... Sorry, the whole battle iws utter bollocks.

    The rebels could've easily been receiving reinforcements throughout the battle, particularly of the rebel ships we DONT see (Captured CIS ships, augmented civilian ships, other fleets that didn't make it to the rendezvous). It's actually a pretty simple explanation... also the Empire doesn't know what point defence is, the Star Destroyers weren't utilised as well as they could be and command kinda collapsed after the Executor was destroyed

  • @ravenmoon5111

    Ty honestly I think Lucas belief was that the Emperor ruled by fear and once he died the entire Star Fleet simply lost the motivation to fight. This would mean that they really didn’t believe in the Empires Purpose and knew they were fighting for the wrong side. It’s either that or the entire premise that the rebellion won at that point is badly flawed

These factors contributed to the ship falling into the Death Star... I just wish I could remember the book I read that in.

    Actually if we go based on legends materials it makes a lot more sense, the executor right about before the the bridge was taken out had taken severe damage from the rebel capital ships, one of the main hangers was engulfed in flames from an attack by the millennium falcon, and heavy attacks from a wing of B-wings has set majority of her stern ablaze and she had begun listing hard to starboard, the when the A-wing hit the bridge it fuel caused a chain reaction which resulted in the middle section of the star destroyers power stations to be wiped out sending her full into a right turn dive, by that point it, the damage was so extensive that damage control couldn't regain control in the auxiliary command, which means there is no longer and flight controls keeping them up and subsequently pulled in by the death star's gravity wells

    This is my theory as well. When the bridge windows blew out, and since shields were totally down, it would have cause an explosive decompression, and since no one wore seat belts, they would have all been sucked out, and the pilot, on his way out may have hit the controls, pitching the shit over. and accelerating it at the same time. Follow flight controls on a plane, full throttle is forward, pitch down is also forward, hit both on the way out, pitch down, full throttle at the same time. and BOOM.

    Yeah, basically what I’ve always thought. Ackbar’s orders to focus all firepower on the command ship combined with the fact that it was so close to the mass of the Death Star, gravity took over and they couldn’t recover control from an auxiliary bridge before they collided. Star Trek fanboys that cite Executor’s destruction by a single fighter as evidence of weakness on the part of SW designs don’t have a clue.

    The Thrawn Trilogy of books did a good job of explaining that the Emperor and Darth Vader had Force -Control over the minds of all of their troops through the dark-side influence, unbeknownst to the crews... They lost both Vader and the Emperor's Force influence at the same time, and the books explain that without that Darkside Guidance, without the Force keeping them working together as a unit - the crews on the ships were like lost children all of a sudden, and just fell apart. That was another reason the Rebels were able to overwhelm a still superior force... they should have made those books into the sequels... >mic drop
