The REAL Reason Men Stopped Wearing Heels

Hi all, I reuploaded this video because it had some render errors. Teething problems I guess :) But hey, it's so nice you have to see it twice!
What was invented by Persian horsemen, disgraced by the French Revolution and brought back the first explicit photographs? High heels.
Heels were originally invented as a tool of war, but have since made a long journey across social divisions and gender norms. Men wearing heels are seen as special. But the high heel for men might be making a comeback.

Logger boots have high heels for additional ankle support, which helps with negotiating uneven or mixed terrain. It definitely helps with going uphill. The raised heel also gives additional arch support, which is needed when doing heavy outdoor. And it acts as a shock absorber when you walk on hard concrete surfaces and have lots of heavy foot impact for long hours. For men, high heels were born out of function for doing rough or difficult work. That's what makes it 'manly'. It has a pragmatic work function. By wearing work boots, men can feel tougher and more manly. Men no longer ride horses into battle as archers to kill their enemy. Therefore, that style of heel isn't considered 'manly'. You're not going to see construction workers wear stiletto heels on the work site. It's obviously impractical and can't be safely and reliably used for hard work. Therefore, women-style shoes will never be manly. Lastly, human beings have sexual dimorphism. Men and women are biologically different. They have different bone structures, builds, sexual organs and other physical characteristics. Men and women clothing has ALWAYS been an expression that maintains the separation men and women.

Haha. Just listened to your critique of Johnny Harris (who I love) which was really interesting then watched this and heard you say Leopold, and my first thought was maybe Europeans called him Leopold or that was his childhood name? Thanks for clarifying. Side thought, most history I read or watch exhibits little evidence for the existence of women. And of course is always from the British point of view in Canada. My parent's grade nine history text (published in the 1930s) refers to the native peoples of Canada and the US as savages through out. I guess the word has a different meaning now? Who were the real savages? Who are the savages today? Looking forward to your slant on historical topics! Oh, and I was unaware, happily, of the weirdo in heels! I'm a woman and only wore heels because my husband made me. (I was his arm candy). My feet were made for runners and that's all I've worn for 30 years! Utility over fashion!

I grew up in the American West and I was a cowboy. I wrangled horses as a summer job to put myself through university. My boots had pointy toes and heels. The heels kept your foot from sliding through the stirrup and provided stability in the saddle. The pointy toes provided easy entrance into the stirrup when mounting and, more importantly, easy exit from the stirrup when dismounting. This was particularly important if you were thrown from the saddle. Your boot wouldn’t hang up or get wedged in the saddle preventing you from being dragged mercilessly along the ground. The boots therefore were entirely utilitarian. The other apparel choices like tight denim jeans and shirts with gaudy patterns and mother of pearl snaps instead of button………well draw your own conclusions around those.😉

The wearing of healed footwear by men goes back to antiquity and was invented originally as a weapon of war, believe it or not. The Medes and Persians around the time the Achaemenid Empire was formed often wore heeled shoes in battle, to prevent their feet from sliding out of the stirrups of their horses. There were a number of other cultures that followed this practice as well and may have included the Scythians. The Scythians were notorious for being able to fire arrows at the enemy from horseback during battle and they were ruthless.

Didn't really establish the reason for the comeback of heels post French Revolution. The pornography and film stars may have popularized them, but you gave the impression that everyone stopped wearing them. So what happened in between? Did they never really go away? Did they continue to flourish somewhere that the FR didn't really have as big an impact, like the UK?

As founder and operator of the German-language forum "Männer auf hohen Absätzen" (MoHH 3.0), Mark Bryan is of course known to me (and even a registered user). I find the aspect - replacing one stigma with the other - well worth discussing. Fashion and society are changing. 40 years ago in the western world only sailors and (ex-)prisoners wore tattoos; earrings only carpenters or artists. Nowadays, it's mainstream. While women over the last decades (and centuries) have adopted all kinds of clothing and accessories from men, and thus taken on and expressed strength and power; the adoption of female-connotated clothing by men is still uncommon and considered a weakness. This is perhaps allowed for carnival, as a joke - or just as an expression of a queer way of life. But a "normal man" doesn't do that. In this respect, I understand Mark, who insists on saying: look, I'm wearing a skirt and heels and I'm still straight. This serves less to stigmatize the LBGT scene and also not to rise above it, but to question the pigeonholing of society. If we talk about gender justice, then we have to fundamentally question role patterns. Equality does not only mean "more advantages for women". If a man puts on a skirt or wears high heels, he does not make himself weaker - on the contrary! He demonstrates more courage and strength to swim against the tide. We have to get away from trying to read out gender or sexual preferences on the basis of clothing.

Dear Hannes, Many thanks for your extensive reply. And here I thought measured discussion on the internet wasn't possible anymore. I agree with many of the points you make, and believe we have a shared vision for the outcome. I dislike society pigeonholing on the basis of clothing, but I also think we should steer away from stating things, actions or people are or aren't 'normal'. Because that makes everyone that doesn't adhere to this normalness immediately abnormal. And I don't believe that's what we should be doing.

According to consensus science for thirty years, gender is not socially constructed. Women and men in every society in the world dress and distinguish themselves differently. Heels are arbitrary. If men start wearing them, they will be a highly masculine form. When women start wearing something. men stop wearing it at all. Gender is not created by "societal norms." Societal norms are created by gender. This has been the consensus science for decades.

5:47 This is not directed at this video alone but something I've noticed a lot. We like to preach tolerance and acceptance until ideologies don't align with our own. Why is it okay to say this man's view of masculinity is "not right" but other's are? Why are we seemingly only allowed to pass judgment on conservative or traditional viewpoints? For example, many Christians believe that men are superior to women. Do we respect this belief? Do we say to ourselves, "Well it may seem strange to me but I have to acknowledge their right to act in accordance with their beliefs?" No, we don't because we have seen that people will abuse any belief for their own ends at the expense of others. Why don't we have the same reaction to Jewish circumcision? Or that a man can identify as a woman? Or is it okay to pass judgment on any of it as long as you don't mind being aligned with left/right? Is it all just virtue signaling and not, in fact, genuine concern over right and wrong?

Many work boots meant for professions that require long hours on one's feet still have higher heels than what most men are used to, since it provides for greater arch support by creating more "drop" from the heel and creates space for a stronger shank. (Eg. Nicks, White's, JK boots etc.) Technically, most mens' footwear still have a heel, just a low block heel instead of something more prominent.

Let's hope that men in heels does make a comeback soon! The fact is that guys can look great in heels. For now, it takes a great deal of courage and confidence to wear heels in public. But courage and confidence are historically "male" traits, but women can be courageous and confident of course. Heels have no gender, they are for everyone who enjoys wearing them. And again, it must be remembered that it was men that first wore heels so many years ago...

So I am not a historian. But I don't think Persian cavalrymen were the first to invent the heel. But they may have found a new use for them. Chinese footbinding to wear lotus shoes has been around for a long time, since the Shang Dynasty (BCEs). However, I don't know when *heels* were added to lotus shoes, let alone how to define common or popular use. It is hard to find info, when we go back this far in time.

It looks like the early Chinese dynasties had stilts, either coming from the center of the shoe, or from well behind the heel of the shoe. So if we define heels as something underneath the heel bone part of the foot, then maybe it was the Persians.

I always thought they originated with european royals which influenced their courts & in turn the more wealthy merchants, but like most things unlearning the bs of US schools is a multistep process. The reality makes more sense given most things I find don't have their origins in fashion (at least those that become less ephemeral) but in practical garments made to solve problems in the time they originated. - to make people's lives a bit easier before being co-opted by those whose lives already were -leading to fashion & symbolism.

Don't discredit your education entirely. What you were taught wasn't wrong. History is always an interpretation and not absolute fact. Rather, see this information as an expansion on what you already have been taught. Put the two together. Does one cancel out the other or can there be multiple explanations for the same concept? A 6 minute video on youtube(however well researched and produced)should not be a determining factor on judging the education you received. It's about heels- not world politics.

I do this for non-sexual reasons" He didn't say anything about other people(all genders) not being normal, instead, it's the other way around...He's being addressed as "Not normal" The problem lays with words/terms like "Sissy" usually used by the judging person(s) in his case some men comment/assume/argue that a person is trying to claim or act like what isn't for whatever reason although there's no way to measure or judge that. This man deserves to be heard first(period) and then we can make an educational video from his currently demise when he's just simply wearing clothes of his liking. Cause otherwise

I always wonder about Louis XIV had high heels and it was great to learn that they originated with horseback riding in Persia. I like how the video looks at Harry Styles and how you say about how that the guy you started out with was problematic as he claims that he’s not a sissy but is normal because he’s straight and attracted only to women. However I was horrified when you called the Sun King - Leopold the 14th. Especially as a Dutchman as you should know as he was a main villain in Dutch history.

I mean a lot of men’s shoes have heels, like loafers, dress shoes and even less formal shoes. However what he was wearing was women’s shoes with a pointy heel so I’m sorry but there is no historic excuse for wearing it:)
