The Real Meaning of E=mc²

You probably think of mass as something you can measure with scales. Your clothes, your watch, your pet, your phone - all of this resembles mass to you. When you think of energy, you likely visualize something abstract, something you cannot touch, like lightning, a beam of light, or battery power.
So how could you possibly connect the two?
The bridge connecting mass and energy is E=mc².

I mean, the niche this channel is trying to fill is basically already filled by Kurzgesagt, and the videos are already similar. They need to find a sub-niche or separate themselves from the similarities, otherwise they'll keep being seen as the knockoff of Kurzgesagt unfortunately. I do like how much shorter the videos are though.

I am a Spanish speaker and the truth is that this type of video is almost not found in Spanish. Currently there are very few English channels that are dedicated to dubbing their content into Spanish and those that do generally end up with the support of this specific audience. I'm actually curious about how many errors this channel and others actually make, I mean it would be cool to have a website that actually rates educational youtube channels based on accuracy of information. Kind of like a mix between imdb and snopes but for youtube. I'm not good at chemistry so I wouldn't even be able to tell he was making an error there. But since you said it's 90% fact I wanted to know if that is based on a true count of all facts presented or not. Because if this video has 10% of misconceptions purported as fact, that means 1 in 10 facts are wrong, which is pretty high. Knowing how reliable or accurate that 10% estimate actually means a lot. That's why we have confidence intervals in statistics.

Could there be a geometrical aspect to Einstein’s equation, E=MC² energy equals mass times the speed of light squared? The C squared can represent light radiating out in every direction forming a sphere 4πr². We have square the radius r² of the sphere because the process is relative to the spherical surface. The interior of the sphere is naturally three-dimensional forming the three dimensions of our everyday life. If we place the Lorentz contraction ˠ of space and time ∆E ∆t ≥ h/2π between the energy ∆E and mass ∆M we link time within the process. The surface of the sphere can form a boundary condition or manifold for the process of energy exchange that forms our ever-changing world. We measure this process as a ‘period of time’ with the atoms of the periodic table being standing waves in time. The spontaneous absorption and emission of light photon ∆E=hf energy is forming potential photon energy into the kinetic energy of electrons. Kinetic Eₖ=½mv² energy is the energy of what is actually happening. An uncertain ∆×∆pᵪ≥h/4π probabilistic future is continuously coming into existence with the exchange of photon energy.

    1. Einstein asked: “Does the inertia of a body depend on the energy content in it?” and answered that the inertial motion of quantum particles (such as light quanta - photons), depends on E=mc^2. Even light quanta with a constant and direct speed (c) require energy E=mc^2 to move. 2. Einstein's E=mc^2 was corrected by Dirac as E=±MC².

Great video, though raises many questions. For example what makes mass so fundamental? Surely attractive forces and types of atoms and types of structures should impact the energy as we see in observations? For example every material is different, so the energy extractable from 1kg of water would be less than from 1kg of uranium. Surely there is some dependence on type of atomic structure and strength of bonding of the particles. I know Einstein was a genius so must be right but it makes no sense ! Think about the particles bonds, there are so many different structures, the energies can't simply be down to just mass. But force of bonding does not come into the equation at all. Why not ? To release energy from a mass you need to break down the bonds. I would get it if energy was a function of the fundamental forces holding particles together and c but only mass ?

The first 20 seconds of the video is not correct and misleading. The stationary and the traveling bullet have the same mass. The formula E=mc^2 is used for stationary objects. The full formula is E=γmc^2 where γ is the Lorentz factor (even this is not the most complete version of the formula). Lorentz factor is 1 for stationary objects, thus you get E=mc^2. When the bullet is traveling, its energy increases, but the mass remains the same. The lorentz factor is what describes how much the energy of the bullet increases when it is traveling. I mean, you even describe in the video that WE are also moving through space even when we think we are stationary, because the earth is orbiting the sun, and the sun is orbiting the milky way's central black hole. That would mean any change in velocity during the earth and the suns orbit would result in a change in mass for you and me, and everything else! Math is not physics. Mass is a property of matter and energy. This equation is just the conversion factor which gives the mass of a quantity of energy. A property is not the equivalent of the thing of which it is a property. Redness is not equivalent to an apple. Mass is always conserved.

  • @david_porthouse

E = mc2 comes in two parts. If we admit that a body has a rest energy of mc2, then we can put together a well-defined energy-momentum 4-vector which transforms consistently under a Lorentz transformation. It does not follow from this that the rest energy is anything but a formal device to get a 4-vector. However there are physical processes such as radioactivity and sunshine which are obviously much more energetic than any chemical process. We can then guess that there exist processes where even the rest energy is converted into other forms such as electromagnetic radiation which correspond to a more traditional view of energy. We can now do experiments which duplicate processes in the Sun, and it becomes steadily more evident that the conversion of rest mass into traditional energy is a fact.

If relativistic mass then it’s ok but the rest of the video incorrect. If we agree on a inertial mass then the rest of the video is correct but the first 20 second is wrong.

At 2min 43 sek in the video it tries to impress the watcher that 448 900 000 000 000 000 m/h is a "huge number", (not to mention it beeing squared). Try to look at the number relatively. If one "new" mile would be 448 900 000 000 000 000 "old" miles, then the speed of light would be 1 new mile/hour, and squared it would still be 1 (one). Thus E=m*1 which makes the "c squared " superfluous. The video should reveal "The Real Meaning of E=mc2" . I still don´t understand. And that goes for the rest of all KZread- clips which has the same ambition. KZread- commentators, explain it!
