What I love about black ops is that yes of course a lot will not be true to real life, its a video game with an intentionally unique to real life story, however it does plant itself in real life with all of its historical background and doesn't attack anything majorly important to history and tries to treat it with complete and utter respect. For example you participate in the bay of pigs invasion, but at the end of the day its a failure, true to real life. You also participate in Vietnam, at the end of the day you lose your entire team and barely make it back home, no huge victory that changed the entire war effort, very secret and behind the scenes things people would know nothing about. Even with the historical inaccuracies, Black Ops presents them in a way that could honestly be believable, secret bases, use of sleeper agents and chemical warfare devices, even the explosion of the rockets, something in history that could've been a cover up if it happened, black ops has such a beautifully well made story

This is why call of duty, as much of an American fuck yeah videogame that it is, was always so good to play. And their stories were amazing, very well made, making you understand the need for you to do what you do. Even Cod Ghost haves a heavily underrated story alongside COD1. Like honestly, even if they're not really political, they are what Hollywood and even modern games lack when they wanna put politics into the mix. Hell, I've seen real neo n--- games have better stories and it's just saddening. I hope cinema recovers or all I'm seeing is lesser budget films and russo-asian films lol

One thing a lot of people missed was in the intel you find in Redemption. Ryan Jackson, (parody of Jack Ryan) the field director of the Black Ops team, wrote a document stating that Alex Mason is a liability and cannot be trusted because of the brainwashing, and knowing Hudson and Weaver will side with him, he orders for them to be lured on a mission in South Africa to where they will be killed by a joint CIA and SAS team, including a reference to Jon Price (his name is spelled different not to confuse the player to his MW counterpart). Along with the secret theme of espionage and Cold War setting of Black Ops, and with Mason in the trailer saying “Just because they write it down and call it history doesn’t mean it’s truth, everything you know is wrong.” was supposed to make the player believe this actually happened and uncovering the intel was the truth of the Cold War. It was supposed to be the original canon ending with Mason’s fate to be killed off so nobody would find out the truth. This actually makes sense. Because there is no logical way the CIA would allow someone who was brainwashed and killed a HVI (Steiner) whilst being completely delusional to operate in the field, even if Hudson and Weaver possessed evidence he was broken free. It’s even worse when he was allowed to be debriefed by Reagan himself when it was heavily implied he assassinated Kennedy. BOCW did something similar, but actually made it happen, as Bell is killed by Adler. If Black Ops were to be a standalone game, it would probably have the best campaign of any other solely based on how interesting this story was.

Fun fact about SR-71 flights over the Soviet airspace: My father was an intern at a air traffic control in one of the Finnish airports in the mid 80's. That airport had both civilian and military airtraffic. One of the senior radar operator showed how an unbellievebly fast aircraft came from the west over the Norway and continued to the east deep into Soviet airspace. The aircraft was incredibly fast and always flew the same route and at the same time. The radar systems in the aiport couldn't keep up with the aircraft so the radar operators had created some kind of formula how they could figure out where the aircaft was when it appeared in the radar. The aircraft flying into the Soviet airspace caused a massive responce from the Soviet air force. Soviets tried to deploy everything they had but once their Migs and Sukhois were in the air that mysterious aircraft was already long gone.

A lot of the weapon and equipment related inaccuracies stem from Black Ops 1 very early in development being intended to be set in the 1980s. As such Treyarch have explained things such as the Hind being in Vietnam as being prototype variants and not the final versions we know in the real world. Plus certain multiplayer maps seem to go beyond the timeframe of the campaign with some seeming to be the late 1970s.

I once watched a documentary about the Vietnam war from the perspective of the viet cong and neutral vietnamese citizens, and according to them a lot of civilians also lived in the tunnels. They had to, as their normal homes were probably being carpet bombed. They built villages underground and lived there for a long time too. The biggest 'tunnel' spanned 20km^2 and was built as a maze too if I'm not mistaken.

As someone who lived in Vietnam, I appreciate the little details in BO1 that are included in the game. Even the Hanoi multiplayer map does feature elements of the Hoa Lo prison, such as the entrance door and the prominent guillotine. The flag tower with the big Vietnamese flag is a few hundred meters down the road, but having it there reminds me of the city too.

Black Ops insired a fascination with history in myself too. That, along with the amazing story, is why it will always hold a special place in my heart. I remember I was in my 2nd year of high school when it came out, I went over to a friend's house and we took turns playing through the campaign mission by mission. I had a rough idea about parts of the Cold War like the Vietnam War and the Cuban Missile Crisis, but I'd never heard of places like Vorkuta prison or Aralsk-7 before so the next day I started googling and reading wikipedia articles about them. I'd be interested in seeing a historical analysis of Black Ops Cold War as well. In my opinion it serves as a good sequel to the original Black Ops and also introduces some fascinating (albeit skewed) historical events. There really was a Soviet spy codemamed Perseus. The USSR really did build fake mock-ups of American towns to train soldiers in the event of a full scale invasion like in Redlight Greenlight. And although Project Greenlight may not have been real as Hudson described it, where neutron bombs were planted beneath cities all over Europe to act as a contingency plan in case of Soviet invasion, this plot point was based on real life Greenlight teams, who were trained American sleeper agents who were sent to cities throughout the Soviet Bloc and were armed with small nuclear bombs which they were instructed to plant and detonate in case war with the USSR broke out.

There’s a couple things here and there that you missed, but mostly it’s weapon related. In SOG, during the end parts of the level you ride around in a 2010 Jeep, I assume that’s for partnering reasons since they did have a deal with jeep. In the defector, you acknowledge the dragons breath rounds but you failed to acknowledge that the spas 12 didn’t exist at the time, the weapon was developed in 1979, the Vietnam war was finished by then, plus it wouldn’t be able to cycle dragons breath rounds in semi auto but that’s a different story. In numbers, Clark carries a G11 through most of the level. The Heckler and Koch G 11 was a very exclusive prototype for the advanced rifle program in the US, he shouldn’t even have one, let alone three since there are two that you can pick up in the level. In crash site, why would a Soviet (despite it being an American plane) cargo plane be carrying rare American pump action grenade launchers? There are several other weapon inaccuracies like some weapons being in the wrong settings like a FAMAS in redemption or a WA2000 in Victor Charlie but those are nitpicks

This is exactly the kind of shit I love about Black Ops and World at War, and why they're my favourite COD games of all time. They're not fantasy futuristic bullshit games, they're steeped in history. These games are far from perfect historically speaking, but they are at least authentic. They prove that it can be really fun to learn about history by using the events, locations, political climates, battles, technology and tactics OF THE TIME and turn it into an extremely captivating story with great gameplay. If this shit was fiction, no one would believe it - and that's the amazing thing about history. I would absolutely love if you did a video like this on World at War - either a historical analysis or a list of inaccuracies, like you did with Vanguard. Separating the truth from fiction in these old games makes you realise just how inspired and passionate the developers were about simply telling a story of a generation that accomplished unbelievable things, and suffered through unimaginable hardships.

My only real issue with this game is most of the weapons, particularly assault rifles like the AUG, FAMAS, AK74u, SPAS12 and a bunch of others had not been invented yet. There are lots of cool 50s and 60s weapons they could've featured, but it seems they wanted to just port over a lot of weapons from MW2 so players who had been playing that for the last year would be more familiar. When I see Russians with FAMAS, and Americans with AUGs, I cringe, but other then that, this is by far my favorite COD game. One time I took acid and played through the whole campaign in one sitting. When the invasion of Ukraine kicked off some time back, you could listen to channels on a ham radio of number stations from the Russians. Some eerie girl voice talking in a monotone voice talking faster than in the game. The Ukrainians were switching between channels and then playing hog/pig noises when they’d switch to a different one because they knew the Russians would tune in. Crazy stuff.

@@ThangLe-md7ow I mean call it what you want but it wasn’t for sleeper agents. It was for sabotage personal operating behind Ukrainian lines at the time. We saw a number of these Russian personal captured and dealt with accordingly at the time. They usually carried mines, recording equipment and silenced special forces rifles such as AS VAL and 9A91 rifles from what I saw. Some even carried Ukrainian produced Malyuk rifles that were silenced oddly enough. Number stations have been used for those operating behind enemy lines since WW2. It was just eerie to hear it being used in a practical sense is all, sorry you’re paranoid.

15:33. Two things here. The SPAS-12 was not manufactured until 1979, so it is anachronistic (one of many anachronistic guns in this game I might add) as mentioned in another comment. But most importantly, the Dragon Breath rounds can't be used in the SPAS-12 if it is firing semi automatic. It is a low power shell, which means it does not have enough power to cycle the semi auto action of it. It would work in the pump action mode however.

I still think that black ops 1 is hands down the best call of duty game of all time, no game will make anything close to what the campaign has done here. The atmosphere of different perspectives; flashing pictures and short clips, the numbers popping up randomly, the distortion and the music/soundtrack is so immersive. My favorite game of all time and this video takes the cake, hell I'm gonna replay the whole campaign now lol

23:15 The soviets did actually drop cargo supply to the Pathet Lao forces (some of them being disguised NVA soldiers) so it's not too far off. SOG was involved with fighting in Laos and the CIA (Air America) was also supplying the opponents of the Pathet Lao, the Royal Lao Army. There were barely soviet ground troops in south east Asia but a lot were officers. The British were also involved in Laos since it's cold war govt inception in 1955, working alongside the soviets to keep the peace. They also did flew some flying missions over Laos with US Marines in the Mekong capturing an image of a Vulcan flying ahead. Thai and KMT Chinese druglords (Taiwanese) were also heavily involved in Laos. With such a wild west frontier during the Cold War, it is no surprise the fictional "Vietnam War" parts of the Black Ops series were mostly in Laos.

2 things Nikita Dragovich didn’t foreshadow Kennedy’s assassination because the last level of the game takes place in 1968, and Kennedy was assassinated in 1963. Also, it’s highly possible that the JFK assassination was a mafia hit JFK gained massive popularity in the voting polls through union help the unions were notoriously controlled by the mob in the 60s his brother who was going after mafia members was also assassinated. It’s believe that JFK took the mobs help, but did not return the favor. It’s also a good explanation as to why jack ruby shot Lee Harvey Oswald after the assassination so he couldn’t reveal that he was a mafia hired hitman.

I think the reason there are hinds in black ops 1 is because they are the prototype versions as to why they look different to the ones actually used in service. Of course I doubt they would be having porotypes in the battlefield but I appreciate them atleast giving that design to the hind if they were gonna include it and this game is the reason I love the hind.

In SOG we also see B-52G’s bombing the NVA. As this takes place in 1968, that wouldn’t make as much sense as B-52D’s and F’s (the variants with taller tails) taking part in the bombings. G’s did make an appearance, but they likely wouldn’t have been prevalent until the 70’s - and the entire squadron is modeled in the G format. It also wouldn’t make much sense for the BUFFs to be used as front line CAS aircraft as they had to fly from Guam for the most part. Operation Arc Light was primarily for hitting strategic targets, rather than providing frontline support.

As a Vietnamese, playing this game makes me chuckle sometimes. I remember the part during interrogation, Mason said the Soviet and NVA release Nova 6 to kill civilian. If I ever met Mason, I would tell him his own government already did that. It didn't kill people sadly but it did make the land unplantable and children with suffering deformity many decades later. Also in some cutscene like in Vorkuta level, they didn't have footage of Soviet concentration camp so they use footage of irl American prison. You can clearly see the orange color. Black Ops is a great game for people oblivious to history. But it should be an inspiration to look up these details on the internet or your local library. If you have history knowledge, you'll encounter weird or odd details. Still an enjoyable game though. One minor nitpick is Vietnamese voice in this game is fucking horrible. Battlefield Vietnam, a game released 6 years ago by DICE, has more authentic voice than Black Ops. And when I said authentic, I really mean it. If I have to rate Vietnamese voice in BFVN, it would be 9/10. COD:BO? 2/10.
