My wife and I visited Highclere in 2019, and it was unexpectedly one of my favorite stops along our trip. I highly recommend to anyone going, see the Egyptian exhibit in the basement. It’s a separate ticket, but well worth it.

I would love to go on the self guided tour! On the TV show, they didn't have to change much when filming in some of the rooms! Glad the beautiful place is still around to enjoy!

Downton Abbey saved this place as it was literally falling apart when it was originally selected. Only the ground floor was habitable, the roof was leaking like a sieve, and the Earl and his family had literally be forced to move out to another smaller house on the estate.

Bravo; you stayed focused on the house. Good video. There has been a very noticeable uptick in tourism at Highclere since it was used as the set for Downton Abbey. This was one of the great houses that benefited from a large inflow of money from a wealthy wife, but unlike Cora Levinson, the bride was English: Almina, the illegitimate daughter (and only child) of Alfred Rothschild. If you saw the episode where Mary and Sir Richard Carlisle, the man she planned to marry for his money, were touring a house to buy, that scene was filmed at Alfred's own Halton House.

Thanks for the information, I did a little looking, Almina was given 500,000 pounds by Rothschild, which is the modern-day equivalent of about 85 million dollars.

One of my favorite things about watching the show is the house. I knew it was a real place but didn't know if they filmed there or was just sets
