I worked with Terry back in the 70's pulling dump trailers......what a crazy sob. He had a trailer he called old flip because he had tipped it over so many times. His engine of choice back then was cat 1693 and he could sure make them run. He was a mechanical genius and a fun guy to work with. May he rest in peace

@@muttleymatthews5200 True, while those air starters work just as well as any electrical starter. The downside is under hard starting conditions like real cold weather or poorly maintained air systems that leak, you run into having enough air supply issues. They sound cool as hell, but the more usual starting motors are the more practical. For extremely large ships engines with secondary diesel generators and compressor systems I seem to recall air starting is still in use today simply because it's cheaper and easier to do it that way.

There is a dude up in Ontario, Canada who built himself an oversized pickup with a 70’s international medium duty body on it. It has a four cylinder Detroit diesel two stroke out of a 1960’s dump truck, and it has an air starter on it. Since he only needs air for the horns, starter and seats, it’s pretty simple, and not prone to leaks so far. People love how it sounds both starting and running.

Yes you just hook an air hose to a tyre (ok, tire). Two tyres generally do it. You should be able to start the truck on 80 psi though 120 is better. If you keep the system properly serviced you shouldn’t have to run out of air. I haven’t run out on mine for years. The air starter tank is isolated from the main system.

I worked for Freightliner of Utah (before they moved to their current location) in the 90's fresh out of college with my A.A.S degree in diesel tech. Had a Conway tractor come in with a air starter issue. I was put to work on it since I must have been the cheapest guy in the shop to work on it hourly. I had never even heard of such a thing as an air stater before that day. I was told they had ten of them in their yard with the same issue. Their mechanic thought it was the air starter leaking air and ordered up 10 new IR starters for each truck at 2k a piece. I spent two days with no manual, instructions and pre-internet working out the issue. I finally narrowed it down to a slave valve that had a slipped o-ring inside of it. It rolled out of its groove and jammed the valve open. This leaked all of the air out of the stater air tank through the air starter. I was thrilled I had found the problem and was eager to go to work on the other nine trucks I never saw. I guess they had their parts changer fix the other nine tractors.

There also exists a spring starter when the operator cranks compressing the springs then releases them. These are generally on stationary engines. In this system, the drive is first engaged into the flywheel, cranking compresses belleville washers then the force is released.

Lots of city buses use air starters. Generally they are being started at the bus garage/depot where they have a ready supply of air and unless they breakdown, they don't get shut off until the end of the day. If they do need it, they have service trucks that can go out with a large compressor and air tank.

I just realized that the truck Mad Max saves in The Road Warrior to haul "that fat tank of gas" has this same kind of starter. I never understood why the truck sounded like an air impact wrench, but now it all makes sense.
