    14:11 What's your experience with towing? Did the result come as a surprise? Correction of the distance in miles: - Without trailer: 226mi - With empty trailer: 132mi - With loaded trailer: 130mi

    Last week it was very cold in Finland too. Several days when it was -25, my MYLR 22's consumption was around 35 kWh/100km (50 km on the highway at avg 100 km/hr). Most of the energy consumption was gone with driving, climate and preconditioning the battery.

    You are absolutely correct, at steady speed, air-resistance is the big factor, weight really doesn't affect much. A little more squished tires, so a little loss there, but.. However on hilly terrain, or stop & go traffic with a lot of acc and brake, yes, it will have a significant effect. You spend more to acc, thus regen more because of higher potential energy, but with dobbel losses (10-15% loss of extra kWh to acc, and 10-15% loss of extra kWh regen), it adds up. Also it's almost never possible to regen 100%. Your result falls nicely in line with my experience towing with diesel car and caravan. Caravan seems to add around 80-90% on a diesel-car. As far as I remember, my "gardentrailer" (Gaupen 1325) adds around 20-30% on my M3 LFP. Which also pretty much falls inline with the increased consumption on the Mondeo diesel with same trailer.

    Thanks for confirming.ams sharing your numbers. 👍 And yes, Regen will never give you back all the energy loss from acceleration, far from.

    That was a very interesting and informative video. Thanks for the work put into it 🙌🏼 Not surprised by the results tho : aero is way more impactful than the weight. Air resistance is the real deal, every manufacturer knows it. I have a C40, in between the “brick like” shape and the motors that could be more efficient (I have a 2023 MY, so right before the enhancements made by Volvo) , consumption is not the best 🫠💀

    Yes, really interesting and shows how big EVs with low Cd value can pull off long range figures. Both C40 and XC40 suffer for its flat and high frontal design in high speeds. But fairly efficient in lower.

    Good video. How about the springs in the trailer. As you load it, it goes down. Several centimeters, at least in my trailer. Loaded trailer therefore may have less air resistance behind the car.

  • @ItsOnlyElectric

    @ItsOnlyElectric

    Yes, rubber suspension on the trailer, checked the specs of the suspension and differs up to 25mm between fully loaded and empty. So that is a compensating factor as air resistance gets a bit lower.

    Very interesting for me as I am just about in the process of researching and buying a touring caravan to tow with my MY LR. Seeing how little difference weight made in your test, confirmed what I have observed in my previous iPace on long road trips from the UK to Spain as well. Extra person in the car makes little difference. As for towing the caravan, it looks like there is a gap in the market for a deflector or spoiler to improve airflow behind the Tesla over the trailer / caravan front. Does anyone know of any such products? That's apart from of course the caravan design itself, which seems to be moving quite slow in this market. I mean, here in the UK the Brits still insist on a full gas oven in a caravan to cook their Sunday roast!

    In this case you messed up a bit , because the recuperation is not as effective when towing this trailer, which has a brick shape and acts as an aerodynamic brake. Plus, the extra weight is not in the car, but over the trailer axle, and that has no recuperation capability, so it doesn't add any extra energy.

  • @ItsOnlyElectric

    @ItsOnlyElectric

    5 ай бұрын

    The energy from the moving trailer still pushes the car forward when slowing down which leads to more potential recup for the car. If the recup is strong enough. So hard to say if the extra friction from the bad aerodynamics eats up that energy or not.

    @@ItsOnlyElectric @OutofSpecReviews has tested different trailer shapes in the past and the effect is real. The video is called ‘Does Trailer Weight Or Shape Impact EV Towing Range Most?’ and the results for 70mph are as follows: truck without trailer - 2.2 mil/kWh, open trailer with total weight 1450 kg - 1.09 mil/kWh trailer without load but with tall plate - 0.77mil/kWh

  • @ItsOnlyElectric

    Depends more on if the trailer has breaks or not. The moving mass of the trailer has a lot of energy, it will take time for it to stop by itself by the air resistance, so kinetic energy from the trailer will push the car forward and extend the stopping distance of the var. But, despite that, the tegen in this case is a fraction in the calculation. The essence is: Weight is not the lost important factor, it's aerodynamics.

  • @ItsOnlyElectric

    This test is done wrong because teslas are lying about range consumption, if you have tesla at 100% the range usage(kwh/100km) will be different from having it at 50%. Next time charge it to 100% or at least 90% and do all tests with exact same battery % otherwise these numbers are false because there's absolutely no chance that a tesla is driving around 200km in -17°C while towing a trailer (according to the numbers 34kwh/100km that you got). I honestly think it wouldn't even drive 150km if you were going on a highway 80kmh from 100%-0%

  • @ItsOnlyElectric

    @ItsOnlyElectric

    5 ай бұрын

    In theory you can for this average speed (73km/h) since calculation is based on how much energy the battery was charged with. So numbers are correct. The real problem is that you don't drive it from 100-0. You may utilize 80% which leads to a lower practical range. 80% of 210km = 168km and if we raise the speed to 80km/h you will flall below 150 as you say.

    We’ve just completed 2000km round trip in Eastern Europe with MYLR 2022: 2 adults, 2 kids + 3 big suitcases. Av. consumption was 220 Wh/km, with an av. temperature of -5 driving at 110km/h most of the time. One of our last longest legs was 265km and during that period temperature dropped to -11 and maintaining same speed we arrived to SC with 16% left in a battery.
