Mark, I have made several comments on this before without your commenting. The first comment was in more detail. I have 2 Canon R3s and both have had similar AF issues, but this has to do with menu settings. Added to the note will be to disable Subject Tracking and Eye detection. I use the R3 AF setup just as I had my 1DX2s, and I have had no issues. However, I have encountered the same on the iDX2 when shooting night games and the players are wearing dark jerseys and no number on the chest for good contrast detection. I have also disabled Preview AF and be sure to pre-focus on the far goal, so that if there is action there, the R3 will not hunt for focus.when using a 400mm. In that perspective, set the R3 to Lens drive to ON when AF is impossible and then hit the BF again and repeat until focus is regained. Also, do a half shutter press to wake up the camera as you bring the viewfinder to you eye, particularly if the camera settings are in a sleep power mode.

He won't comment, head in the clouds lol, dreaming of why Canon is so crap now. Photography has changed, from quality cameras to gimmicks that don't work. Overpriced junk. My R6 never worked right until it got flooded out by rain; it was under warranty. Canon told me all the top sealing was missing, though it had faults elsewhere. They fixed it, and they fixed the focusing issues. Look at Canon's firmware updates, mostly fixing faults. Canon produces junk that works when it feels like it. It's not photography anymore but a thing to keep its fans happy. 'Hey, we just brought out a new camera with a new shiny button,' and shock horror, the kids will flock to buy it. I don't normally comment on photographers' channels due to that clicky nature they have, and very sure this one fits that bill, but had to on this one.

Why buying a 5K camera when you have to disable Subject Tracking and Eye detection? I use the R6 along the 1Dx MKII and the AF on the R6 with Subject Tracking and Eye detection is fantastic. Value for money the R6 is much better than the R3.. and I have been using it shooting pro - football for almost two years

You shouldn't have to disable subject tracking and eye tracking. Mark needs to send the camera and lens to Canon and have them verify that everything is on spec.

This exact same thing happened to me with a shoot on March 28th with my Canon R6 with the 70 - 200 f.2.8 Mark II. Went into manual mode to finish because it was being reliable. The red box issue happened and the it might eventually work, but it didnt occur until I was halfway done for the day.

Hi Mark. I feel your pain I have a R6mk2 and to say I am having issues adjusting to it..last week after watching your tutorial I thought I would give it a go with the EF 70-200. Initially I had the same issue when lifting the camera to my eye it would not Bl**dy focus and you have to hunt around looking for something for it to catch… I found in the AF settings purple courted ones on the R6 it’s option 3 “Lens Drive when AF impossible” change to “ON”. Covered a game on Sunday worked a dream.. still not sure on the auto eye detection possibility of going back to old school on that

I had issues some time ago with a brand new 1D4 , trying to convince Canon that I had a duffer , any I sent it in to CPS ,then they sent a loaner , a really knocked about body , but it worked brilliantly , so I now know it was not me . CPS replaced much of the internals and sent it back , and it was as it should have been . I have used my 70-200 2.8 mk2 for many years and will change it when they get RF version right ( internal focus and short zoom throw ) .

I have had exactly the same issues with the R5. I have lost no end of shots after the camera has been on standby and I pick it up to take the shots of low flying aircraft. I only have a couple of seconds to pick it up and get the thing in the frame and press the back button....then nothing. now, if I think an aircraft is about to appear I take the battery out to Re-boot the camera. That seems to work.I originally thought it was a lens issue. I use the 500 f4 mk2 but tried a 100-400 mk2...same issue. I have just updated the firmware to 2.0 and there is supposed to be a fix for the standby mode response. Fingers crossed.

I'm having a focus problem with the Canon R7 + Canon EF 70-200 2.8 USM I. It doesn't focus well and some images simply lose focus in the sequence, even though the subject appears in focus on the screen. I've already tested it with the II version of the lens, it improves a little, but unlike DSLRs, I don't feel like it focuses well. I use a Canon EF/RF adapter.

I created a shortcut in the green area for fast disabling subject tracking, in certain situations helps. I own rf 85mm f/1.2 and multiple EF mount lenses, native and 3-rd party, with a ring adapter version, i see no difference of focusing between lenses. The only difference i found was that with EF glass images are darker with the same settings, probable because of the closer distance of the RF glass to the sensor.

I have experienced freezing when using the adapter and an EF300mm lens, but no freezing with the RF70-200mm. It is surprising to hear people say they have freezing with an R3/RF70-200 combo. As far as subject tracking and staying on the primary subject when shooting soccer is an issue. Seems to have trouble reacquiring the primary subject if a person crosses in front of them. I use back button focus, and I always have to release & press the button again.

From what I gather, there are more pins on the mount than the adapter, those additional pins (not being used by the adapter) are AF specific for native glass, so to use adapted glass on a body like this should be thought of as a intermediate solution and not the full experience. Rant when the camera fails with native glass, and yes these are incredibly expensive combos but that's where we're at with it all. Still sucks though.

I have tried the RF 70-200 and absolutely hated it! It definitely needs to have an internal zoom like the ear version, for sport anyway. The twist movement from 70 to 200 is so much more than on the EF version and the telescopic movement was offputting as well! I have heard that Canon are reevaluating The RF lens to copy the internal design of the EF Lens, so hopefully that should be out later on this year. Anyway, hopefully I have now solved the issue with a simple settings change! Annoying but good all the same one less test at today’s game, and I will pop a video out later.

Hi Mark - Is your Multi- Controller button set to AF point movement ? The AF point may have been shifted down the screen slightly in error and focused on the grass in the foreground. It appears that the camera was lifted up slightly on the last photo which was in focus. Obviously pressing the Multi-Controller re-centres the AF point back into the middle of the screen. Where was the Red Box focus point showing on the images when viewed in the camera ? Or could it be that your R3 is telling you to use Back Button Focus 😂

  • @davepastern
    @davepastern3 ай бұрын

I had a lot of initial AF issues with my R3 that absolutely frustrated me for ~2 months and they were ALL MY FAULT. Both setup issues and unlearning DSLR and learning the MLC way of doing things. Once I adapted and fixed my settings, the R3 performed and has continued to perform for a year now. What did I do wrong? 1. I had the AF controller enabled to move the AF point. As I was back button focusing, my finger was moving the AF point around, so the camera wasn't focusing on what I thought it was/wanted it to. Disabling this solved 1 issue. 2. I had the eye control AF enabled via a 2nd back button. As I was new to the camera, and still relatively new to back button focusing, I kept pressing the wrong back button, accidentally enabling the eye controlled AF and again not focusing on what I wanted. I disabled eye control AF completely and re-programmed the 2nd back button to its original intended action. The last solution wasn't a setting issue, but an AF method. Single focus on a subject works differently between DSLRs and MLCs. I kept using the AF controller button to gain focus on the bird, and then enable the eye detect AF. The camera didn't really want to focus on BIFs, but did perform OK with perched/static birds. Anyway, fellow photographers told me to pre-focus to a similar distance to my subject, then engage the eye detect AF. Et voila! These 3 things fixed ALL of my R3 AF issues. Caveat: I am using an older mark 1 EF 500f4 prime. It's AF performance is much slower than the mark 2 version of this lens, and it's AF accuracy is a tiny bit worse too. The mark 2 version has dual AF motors (and these motors are more powerful than the mark 1 unit's single AF motor). I am also using a mark 3 1.4x TC. I am saving up to upgrade to the mark 2 version as it's initial AF acquisition is significantly faster and more accurate than my mark 1 unit. Once the mark 1 lens is locked on, it's actually very good at tracking the subject (the mark 2 is better, but not by much imho). Note: the 1.4x III TC has a AF chip in it that has been designed to work with all of the mark 2 super telephoto primes and provide better performance when using the TC. My mark 1 lens gains no benefit from this AF chip sadly so I am losing performance. The mark 1 lens is still very good, don't get me wrong and I highly recommend the unit to those who want a big White prime for birding photography but can't afford the mark 2 version or a RF600f4 (don 't go with the RF600f4 anyways, the mark 2 EF 600f4 is optically sharper). The R3 is superb. My only current issue is balancing the brightness of the EVF to the rear LCD screen and both to being accurate to the actual exposed image. Canon CPS Australia have also kindly assisted with my issues and have made some recommendations to AF tweaks that may improve initial AF acquisition for those of us using the older mark 1 lenses or 3rd party EF lenses. I have not tested these amended settings yet but I trust my contact at Canon Australia CPS (he is also a birder, and also personally owns a R3).

Although I've had this happen with a 400D and a much cheaper lens, I think it might be the same thing: The camera didn't register the change between M and AF modes. When I changed modes, I had to loosen the lens from the bajonet and click it back, only then would the camera "know" what mode I was in. The lens works in a 90D without problems. I suspect a communications error of the interface. Funny thing is, that this error only developed after a couple of years, it was okay when the camera was new.

Just wondering if you had a loose screw on either the body or lens bayonet plates? I suffered this once on my 400 and it was a couple of loose screws on the bayonet cap. Tightened them and the issue went. Worth a quick check. Hopefully, a simple settings Change has solved my issue now. One last test at today’s game and I will knock up a quick video.

I've never had an issue with the ef 70-200 ii on my R6 ii (in fact its been spectacular), but the ef 100-400 ii has been erratic to say the least... On Sunday I was shooting football and at the start of the day I was getting maybe 60% in focus (the rest were, as Mark describes, Muzzy... but not totally off, just soft), but surprisingly as they day went on it became better and better to the point it nailed focus 9/10 times. I'm wondering if it isn't ef lens IS fighting the IBIS that might be the issue.. Not sure, but I'm going to make sure I keep the IS off from now on. Don't need it anyway when shooting at fast shutter speeds...

Found this online as a guy who had his R3 replaced fully too....1) I experienced freeze-ups with my Canon R3 the first week I received it. 2) Canon CPS took the camera in for repair, replicated the issue, reinstalled the firmware, reset it to factory settings, tested it, found no more freeze-ups, declared it fixed and returned it to me. 3) I restored my settings manually and the freeze-ups still occurred. 4) Canon replaced my original R3 with a brand new R3 5) I updated my firmware to V1.1.1 and restored my settings from a CSD file this time, and the freeze-ups still occurred. 6) In all cases my freeze-ups were such that the buttons and dials would not respond (including power switch), yet touch functions still functioned including the smart controller. It would also freeze-up, at times, while asleep and could not be awakened. Of course, since the screen was black (asleep), no touch function could work. The only way to restore the camera was to pull the battery and then reboot the camera. I have since, of course, contacted Canon and am awaiting a response, as Canon's engineering department seems to be in a denial mode, despite a Canon repair technician in Virginia having replicated the freeze-up issue when it first went in for repair. I advised Canon that while I await their response, I was going to, one by one, change my settings to default and see if any particular setting eliminated the freeze-ups. My first setting change was to restore the aperture and speed change dial settings to default, as I had them reversed. No change. I still had freeze-ups, so I restored my setting. Next, I reasoned that, since the freeze-up even occurred while the camera was asleep, the only function I had changed that would involve activity during the sleep mode would be the GPS setting, which I had set to Mode 2. I disabled the GPS altogether. Since I have done so, I have left the camera on 24x7. Not once has it failed to awaken from sleep mode nor has it frozen at all while awake and being used. I have been testing for a solid week now (on 24x7) and I'm optimistic that this is the cause of the freeze-ups, as before I could rarely go a day without a freeze-up. I'm asking that some of you who are experiencing freeze-ups with the R3 such as I have been experiencing to check this setting and 1) verify it is enabled on your camera and 2) verify that by disabling it that the freeze-ups no longer occur. Similarly, those of you who have an R3 and have experienced no freeze-ups, can you verify that your GPS is disabled.

Had the R3 for 2 years and had freeze-ups with GPS on and old EF lenses with Canon connecter. Since turning of f the GPS setting which I read about over a year ago and changed to RF lenses only, it works perfectly every time. I now have the RF 100-500 L, RF 70-200 2.8 L and the RF 24-70 2.8 L and have never had a problem since! I have shot Ice Skating - wildlife (Birds mostly) - Cars - Bikes - People etc. with no issues at all. I had a EF 70-200 lens after a while of shooting seemed to cause the problem or only seemed to freeze on this lens. Now I only use native glass and have no problems at all - The RF lenses are amazing. I ALWAYS USE "CASE 2" WITH -2 AND +2 TRACKING (AF - 2 in menu) with Subject Tracking set to "ON" for everything and only change the "Subject to detect" when the subject changes. It now NEVER MISSES. I hope you solve the problem Mark cos i enjoy your channel and know it's so frustrating when it goes wrong at the worst time. All the best mate.

I had the same issues with R6 and EF70-200 using electronic shutter - it had locked up many times during the game to the point I had to pull the battery. Fixed by switching to airplane mode, not a single lock-up since then. Someone (I think on reddit) mentioned that it tries to refresh GPS data, then tries to search for phone (R6 doesn't have onboard gps) and when in crowded areas, it can lead to lock up. I use back button focus, in fact I have 3 different focus modes mapped to rear buttons (person af, eye af, fixed point trade-off for quick recall for panning shot - I have that mapped on different custom mode on the mode dial, if I feel like trying panning shots, I flick to C3 and then back to C2 for normal use)

I also shoot with an R3 and an R5 but have had the opposite to you Mark. My R5 misses focus now and then but my R3 has never missed a beat. I shoot running and cycliung events, so people coming steadily towards me and not eratic like football, but I switch from person to person quickly and when it's busy it can get pretty crazy. I do have two observations... 1 - I have found both the R5 and R3 to be more resposive and reliable when using RF lenses. I used EF lenses with an adapter for a while and whilst they were still as sharp as ever, they were slightly slower then the RF counerparts and would miss a little bit more. 2 - I know you aren't a back button focus user, but it mighht be worth tryingl. I have a feeling (and this is just a feeling wirth no evidence to back it up whatsoever) that my R5 and R3 both focus betetr and more reliably with back buttoin focus. It also allows me to have three different focus modes on the back of the camers (AF-ON is for face tracking with Eye-AF, * is for old scholl single point focus, and the third option is the same you have for panning). I hope you get it sorted as the R3 is (in my opinion) by far and away the best camera for sports and leaves old DSLRs for dust.

I photograph wildlife, and I've no experience with doing sport but there are some similarities... With wildlife, a common problem with mirrorless cameras is getting the focus locked onto the background. Once that's happened, the camera can't "see" a subject that's closer to you and so subject detect is useless. What you've experienced is different - the focus is actually locked on the foreground, but the camera is still struggling to identify a human shape. Anyway, I and a lot of wildlife photographers work around the dreaded "background lock" by using two or even three back buttons for focus. Personally, I use two - one of them for my main settings, such as a large area box or whole frame, and the other set to spot AF. If my camera refuses to grab a subject with my main button, I use the spot focus button to grab the subject (or at least get pretty close) and then hand back to my main setting, which will work as it should 99 per cent of the time. It's clumsy at times and it helps if you have fast focussing lenses, but it's dug me out of many AF holes since I started using mirrorless bodies. Good luck.

I think I might have sussed it though... I might have mistakely left the IS on the lens when using a monopod and I think it's been fighting with the IBIS. Focus with my 70-200 ii has been insanely brilliant (IS is always off when shooting off a pod.) Playing around with the R6 ii and 100-400 ii at home shooting fast moving birds, focus has been quick and accurate.. with the lens IS off. Also 100% do not use eye tracking when shooting field sports if you work quickly. Its fine if you let it settle and track for a second or so, but if you snap onto a subject and shoot, you're going to be disappointed.

Be sure your thumb isn't on the back focus button. That will make it not focus

Try back button focus. Actually I was a bit surprised when I realized you haven't set your camera up this way. Back button focus makes the camera do exactly as I expect, when I'm shooting sports and fast paced action. Even my fuji x100vi is set up this way for street and recreational photography. Can't imagine going back! I believe it's the same feeling trying to race a car with a fully automatic vs manual transmission - one is more user friendly the other offers superior control. I think mirrorless are ment to be shot w. back button focus, since tracking, dynamic zones and hundreds of focuspoints differentiate them from dslr's.

Mark, I shoot Z9 the change in tech required a change in applying the right setting, tracking is ok in the right circumstances, but don’t let the hype and promotion get ahead of the fact you control the camera. Don’t let it control you!

@@MarkKerton See how easy it was to actually find a solution? That's exactly why I take the camera out before critical work, put it through the paces as soon as I get it. I also can care less what brand it is as long as it does it's job. I use Canon,Pentax, have used Chinon,Nikon, Olympus, and bought a few Sonys recently.
