    Mark, on the R5 - I go Electronic 1st curtain rather than full electronic. No weird shaped balls :-) . Thanks for the videos.

    Yes, the rolling shutter is a definite issue on the R5. The stacked sensor on the R3 really does help and I haven’t experienced anything wrong with that as yet. Thanks for watching

    I've found that the electronic shutter on the R3, with the stacked sensor, is much better for action than the electronic shutter on the R5. With the R5 I had significant issues with balls and bats (baseball) being distorted. I haven't had any of those issues though with the R3.

    You've really mastered catching the reaction shots. Very inspiring for a guy like me who still struggles to remember the shot after the action shot.

    The banding I learned about it the hard way. Luckily I was only 3 minutes into an event when I found out. Every mirrorless camera "should" have a setting called Anti-Flicker, and/or variable shutter. The latter makes your shutter speeds go into decimals to workout the flicker. Try it out on any LED lights you have around, they are the source of the banding.

    I’m a motorsport photographer and I never use high shutter speeds as I’m always panning. Vehicle tracking with my Z9 & Z8 is superb. I’ve never suffered from the dreaded oval images of subjects doing motorsport but did get some of doing some wildlife at high shutter speeds which I didn’t expect with the stacked sensors.

    Covered an International match a few years back when a large firecracker was thrown towards the pitch by visiting fans and landed on the shoulder of a photographer sitting about a yard from me. It exploded on his neck/head area and burst his eardrum and burnt his head. He was quite badly hurt and has never been back near a football match since. In terms of the R5 I believe the oval ball is due to the sensor design. You may also find bent vertical structures in the background with the R5 if panning. The R3 shouldn't have these issues as it has the stacked sensor which is supposed to eliminate the problems.

    Hi Mark ...Great set of pics from both games . Glad you have recovered from that long shift to Blackburn . Yip pens are a pain to do. Backs ? Reminds me of old Dave Sutherland (Pic Ed. at Aberdeen Journals) told me no backs please. Did notice that both RAF Lossie and Coningsby had the Typhoons out in the dark this week. Matches : WOSL - Renfrew FC v Maybole Juniors 9th March - SPFL - Partick Thistle v Raith Rovers 12th March - Partick Th. v Greenock Morton 16th March for me. Take care Mark. best regards,.....

    I am shooting R3 not had that issue in ES, reckon it’s because of the sensor readout speed, on R5 great camera however slower sensor readout from what I’ve heard/ samples seen, interested if your seeing that with your new R3 or only the R5. My friend shooting R5 / R6 II use MS and they say no worries on shape of the ball, however they said same thing as you with elect shutter and R5, R6 etc

    Mark its a real balance with the banding, with the Z9 we have the option to shoot in fraction of seconds to try and balance/adapt the electronic shutter as I have this challenge when shooting concerts, ie led lighting. Thanks for your video

    Great video Mark. I had my first night game shoot last night, I just had a query with the image style you would use/recommend. I had my camera at f2.8 and 1/1000 shutter for the most part, do you shoot all your images in RAW? I shot mine in L and noticed a lot of noise particularly on the night sky. Thanks

    The R3 and all non-"global shutter" electronic shutter cameras have a potential rolling shutter issue as they sequentially read the data from the sensor which is not "protected" by a closed mechanical shutter. Whether you see it, depends on the sensor readout speed. As the R3 has a much faster readout than the R5 it appears less often.

  • @cdiderich

    @cdiderich

    Here are some unaudited readout speeds I found: Canon R5=15.5ms, Canon R3=5.5ms, Sony A1=4.2ms, Nikon Z9=4.0ms

    It does have issues with rolling shutter distortion, they're just greatly reduced.

  • @_SYDNA_
    @_SYDNA_3 ай бұрын

    Good examples of rolling shutter here for sure. The R5 doesn't build a picture fast enough to do e-shutter without flat balls and rubbery forearms. Once you get the focus comfortable on the R3 it seems like the R3 would be good for darts. Very good low light. Very good, fast e-shutter that does not distort things.

    To be honest though I've not yet shot much soccer/volleyball fast-ball stuff on the R3. With basketball it will freeze the ball round as the moon with "Spalding" in embossed letters you could almost touch. I guess I should try soccer before promising too much, but I believe the R3 captures full image in 3/1000 of a second so very little bend.

    Great content. Were you intentionally using f5 on your 70-200? You can try to reduce banding by dialing in fractions on your shutter speed, but to deal with the rolling shutter issues you would need a faster sensor camera like the Nikon Z8 or Z9...

    Good spot. I tend to shoot goal mouth stuff at f5.6 just to give me a bigger depth of field and hopefully keep a bigger area of the action in focus.

    @@MarkKertonMy 2nd body is a D5, and I wish the Z9 was 20-24mb because in the low light I shoot in the D5 kills it. Then in normal light when getting action from the other end of the pitch in crop mode, with near the same resolution as the D5, I am happy the Z9 starts at 45mb. I also wish I could get the knack of the pleasing colours you consistantly produce, but I don't use Adobe or Canon, but get them right on occaisons. The blocked goal scorer, tell me about it, got the tee-shirt for that one 😆😆. Always enjoy your vids, thank you for all the tips and insight passed on in them.

    7:25 the ball is a dead give away you're using the electronic shutter ;) The R3 would have been much better (not perfect) for this shot. I still maintain you should have chosen the R6 ii as your second body. Its vastly superior to the R5 for the job unless you want to be using the mechanical shutter.

    I would hold off on getting a global shutter camera anytime soon. The technology is not quite there yet and will only get better. The speed of the sensors are getting faster by leaps and bounds. I will be waiting at least another generation before I get one. Canon is behind the curve in sensor tech, so wait to they catch up or possibly move to another brand if you have to upgrade now.

  • @stubones

    @@stubones Canon has been behind in sensors and has had the worst dynamic range of any of the sensor for many years compared to Sony (also Nikon whose uses Sony sensors. The R3 is the best sensor yet and is ranked 18 overall in DXO chart below many Sony and Nikon cameras, it also is only 24mp. The R5 at 35mp is rated 23 overall. In dynamic range and noise, the R3 rates high (number 3) on the list, but that is because it is compared to other cameras that have double the resolution. The Sony and Nikon cameras it is competing against have much more resolution. Even Mark likes the R5 because of the extra resolution he mentioned in his video. But I am not going to argue with you. I own an R5 but I am not a fanboy, I call them as I see them and DXO has tested these sensors and you and I have not so I trust their data over your disparaging comment to puff up Canon who has been way behind in sensors and dynamic range since the Canon 5d.

    Agreed. Any sport where there are multiple subjects, crossing paths, it just cannot keep up! I’m sure the tech will come where we can lock a subject at distance and track it, but right now sticking to the old-fashioned way, singlepoint, and AI servo
