The Queen's Gambit by Walter Tevis - Book Review - Rant Review- I Hated This Book.
I don't normally go out of my way to review things I don't like, and if I do, I generally try and look at it from all sides. A book might not be for me, but that doesn't mean it doesn't have some decent qualities.
But I really, really, really, didn't like this book. So this isn't that kind of review. This is just a woman, ranting at a camera, about a terrible reading experience. Hopefully I can find my fellow Queen's Gambit Book haters out there. Or at least, maybe I can save someone else's eyes or ears from the experience.
This is NOT a review of the Netflix adaptation.

"And thats fine, she's beautiful" i was literally just stuck in awe every second she was on screen, its almost unrealistic how gorgeous Anya Taylor Joy is. Like, who gave her the right to be that pretty! The show is worth watching for her looks alone, but the show is actually really freaking dope

i didnt hate the book, but i do agree with you about the sexual assault scene, it was so unnecessary. and yes, the tournaments were very repetitive too. great review!

I like to research about the book before I read it. Why read a book about chess if you don't like chess.

I would have to agree that this book was terrible. It was like a man wrote it having never met a young girl in real life. The amount of times it referenced her checking her big white sanitary pad and “it was good”....I couldn’t even. The book was boring, problematic and had no interesting storyline or characters.

Wonderful review. You were very humorous in your expressions and articulations. I think the people who made the Netflix series saw how Beth's story could be very compelling even if the author didn't.

I also went for the free Audible book before starting the series and forced myself to finish. Narrator sounded like the robo voice for the first version of computer voices. Her men's voices sounded like Barney the dinosaur. I couldn't keep track of the men in story because they were all the same. As for the book, the only things I liked were the chess parts. I'm a middle aged man and even I was bothered by how simplistic Tevis (a middle aged man) wrote the teenage woman. So much trauma was just casual throw away lines that were never addressed or followed up on. Feels like a man in the 1960's wrote this and that's pretty much what it was. I totally agree the drug and alcohol addition stuff was unrealistic and the sexual assault was brutal to read and none of it went anywhere. I'm actually looking forward to watching the Netflix show. I feel like so much more could have been done with this storyline that was missed.

The show is way better. I was surprised when I heard about hoe bad the book was because they managed to make a great show out of a very bad book. Jolene is a good friend to Beth, Beth gets more than one friend and she actually grows as a character. She's a bit of an a hole as a child but gets better as she gets older. The show is really worth it.

Looks like I might enjoy the book. I am not a chess player, nor a reader, but I might actually enjoy the game play explanations if the author can make it the least bit interesting..

I find the book enjoyable, as someone who doesn’t play chess. I find the straightforward and pointed way the book is written refreshing. It just gets straight to the point, which makes more drawn out moments LIKE the chess games all the more gratifying. This review brought up a couple good points, but come on…of course there’s going to be chess described in a book about chess.

I... Haven't read the book, but I did just finish watching the show (which I loved). It's definitely not a thriller though - it's more like Jane Eyre with Rochester replaced by a Chess Board. I would definitely feel miss sold If I thought I was looking at a thriller. And - the detailed descriptions of pieces moving probably work far better visually (no need for the complex descriptions - just visuals) (PS; Not read it - and glad you've warned me off ever doing it - pretty much 80% of the specific things you call out as bad are not there or substantially changed :) )

Thank you for this review. I actually am neurodivergent. I have Autism and dyslexia. I wanted to read the book cause I loved the show and USUALLY "The books is better" but I'm halfway through (after 2 weeks of at least 4 hours a day) and I feel like it's written by a child so I wondered if anyone else struggled or if it was just my neurodivergent brain so thank you. I'm moving on to the next book!

I personally enjoyed the book. I am not a chess player, just an occasional watcher. This person is over exaggerating. Like seriously - describing it as a “disaster” and then proceeding to complain about the number of chess matches/tourneys in this book. Can I remind you that the title is The Queen’s Gambit? Of course you should expect lots of chess... Also, the SA scene is NOT long at all. Beth used the n-word, sure, but you failed to provide context. It was set in the 1950/60s. A black woman insulted her and she responded back with a racist remark which was deemed acceptable back then.

Wow thank you for sharing. I was watching another review comparing the book or the series and the guy picked the book as the better option??? It's so illogical to me how a writer would set up so many racist stereotypes in one POC character and have her be the bad guy (the sexual assault) while making her Beth's only friend???? When the reviewer mentioned this I was like nahhh man wtf does that even provide to the story's progression? Nevertheless when you put it that way, the series is definitely 10x better than what you explained in this video. I recommend this series because it's fairly short for a series but it's purpose was probably to make the audience appreciate the art of chess. There were spices of adolescence here and there with Beth's problem in accepting that she won't win all the time, and a few more. The story doesn't really explore much topics other than chess I guess. Even what I just said about the art of chess thing wasn't even mentioned so much in the story? I stated that just because Beth mentioned in her first interview that in chess she feels like it's her own world where she doesn't have to actually feel the risk of her actions, they're just shapes with different roles. That's also pretty much the only thing that made me think the purpose of this show is simply to promote chess, although it's literally just one statement. Because it's just once, it gave me the impression that chess is basically Beth's life mechanism? She's an orphan and turns out her adoptive mom dies too while the adoptive father is an asshole without a good reason, this could've been a good point for the story to explore Beth's character deeper. When her adoptive mother dies I was expecting something more dramatic but turns out there wasn't much. Perhaps the route could've lose the viewer's attention towards the main course, chess itself but idk honestly it could've had something else. Like Neon Genesis Evangelion, (I know this is kind of a far genre to mention) there was a character, Asuka thought that her life is meaningful now when she's young and accomplished as a pilot but she loses her mother. Her mother was mentally ill so she never gave Asuka the right affection which affected Asuka mentally too. This made her aggressive by character but truly all she wants is genuine affection because she never gets it in her entire life. This could've been Beth as well, yes she did lose her games here and there but it's never really clear what made her jump back into chess??? Well yes Jolene reached out to her but the show didn't communicate it explicitly to the viewer what character growth made Beth better that she could finally win the chess tournament in Russia? Evangelion explored those personal topics while still promote what different people want, which are cool fighting robots. Sorry if that was a handful to read but heyyy I appreciate you so much for reading this ilyyyy. Tell me what you think of my short review or the story itself idk lmao.

It's par for the course that she'd express that she didn't like the book. Clicking the video just to turn around and chock it up to "you're wrong" is a bit odd of you. Just because you like a book doesn't mean disliking it is wrong and able to be "fixed" if they read it again, lol. Besides, while I can't say I would have the same take if I personally read it, from what I heard, there are plenty of problematic things to dislike the book for in general, so *someone's* gonna have a negative critique.
