The Psychology of Projection

Projection is a psychological fact that can be observed everywhere in the everyday life of human beings. It is an unconscious mechanism where one ascribes one’s own motivations, thoughts, feelings, and desires that are unacceptable to oneself, while attributing them to others. It is a misalignment of the inner and outer world, because what one is inwardly, one will see outwardly.
To really know who we are, we must concern ourselves with correcting such misjudgements. Many people will cling to them with every fibre of their being, because if one accepts correction, one may fall into a depression.
When we find certain unacceptable feelings, thoughts or behaviours in ourselves that we refuse to acknowledge, and see someone with that specific trait, we will feel resentment, hatred and anger towards them. Projection occurs not because of what other people say to you, but rather because of what you yourself think about those people.

I believe projection to be one of the most important (and damaging) human psychological behaviours for which people should develop acute self-awareness. It should even be taught in schools IMO. So many of our societal ills are a consequence of projection. Thank you for this excellent piece.

Hard to say why we have to learn these things the hard way. When we do it leaves a hell of lasting impression. I'm 55 and just learned about these sorts of things. I used it to find parts of myself I was squashing. When anyone irritated me I would search within and see what bothered me and why....I didn't really get answers but I stopped attacking others with my thoughts and spent a lotta time letting me know that I love all parts of me/us and accept every part etc....just really stopped with the judgment and i feel connected with myself and have warm interactive relationships with others for the first time.. it's nice not to be in constant pain.

All that I, in fact, died believing, as wholeheartedly as i could have. Then take all the lesser minds that have graced this place, divide for the amount of sadness THAT variable causes and add THAT to how much suffering those dead souls have overcome. now, add all the destruction of my old life that has been debased by all the treachery that comes from the ignorance of all those lesser minds, and then combine THAT with that which could be our futures, And solve for a way out of this place. • @0RTH0CHAD

I would personally put it in a different way, it’s self-awareness (which requires ‘humility’), in which ultimately “introspection” or “reflections” will comes with it. Because if I didn’t realized that I have acted or have done anything worth introspecting or reflecting (in other words, I am self-deceived), then I won’t be able to introspect on my projections; so in the very capacity of self-awareness comes self-correction.

Good video. Random thought: I’ve read almost all of Jung, and I always hear people quoting his assertions about making the “unconscious conscious” as like-some ultimate goal in life, but I never hear anyone, not even Jung, talking about the innate tendency and utility of the human body to do the opposite, and make the conscious unconscious. Examples: you learn to flick the light switch On, or you learn to drive, at first you do it consciously, but after a while, it becomes ‘second nature’, autonomic, and it is done quite unconsciously. To do these things unconsciously is not some sign of degradation, but a sign of mastery. (Sort of like Ultra Instinct in Dragon Ball Super.)

Did you know that physical balance is a main category of exercise along with strength, endurance, and flexibility? When I found out training ones coordination was a thing through balance training exercise, it cleared up a HUGE amount of my projecting, because I learned how to become aware of every inch of my body and bring my awareness in like an ice skater bringing in their arms. I’m now always immediately aware of when I’m projecting and know how to make corrective action. Sometimes it takes a bit for me to work through it but I’m now always aware of it.

100 agree, ever since I started doing leg balances and body balance exercises overall, my self-awareness has heightened, it's still a bit of a struggle, I think the body mind connection is at play here and needs time to really synchronize, but co-ordination is as important as anything for the body. P.S also doing task involving your hands so to enhance your dexterity especially the fingers will help greatly, think playing the piano, practicing writing with the left hand if you are right handed and vice versa, brushing your teeth with your right hand if you are left handed and vice versa, learning to juggle balls with both hands or one hand, learning to juggle a ball (football) or soccer ball for you M'ericans with your both feet or using one foot. Doing this will greatly enhance co-ordination and reveal imbalances, greatly helping in my opinion connection of the left and right hemisphere.

Betrayal is actually an aspect of humanity, distrust that results from that experience comes from knowledge out of experience and it's not a "projection", at least not in a sense that your implying. Because when someone is "projecting" it implies you're just imagining things. Also, logically it does not follow, nor does it have anything to do with projecting ones own aspects of personality onto others. That's a different thing altogether. Again, to reiterate, betrayal is an aspect of humanity. Learning from betrayal and being betrayed is a learning process, a process of becoming an adult.

A VIDEO ON DEREALIZATION PLEASE. after hearing the Jung excerpt that you quoted I’m starting to explore the idea that projection is the early stage catalyst of Derealization and maybe Depersonalization. Once you’ve traveled too far into your paradoxical life, seeing that you were targeting hatred at your own projection and not the world would be extremely hard to recover from. And if you don’t recover I assume the ego would essentially sit on the outside of reality not being able to find a place in either side, because you’ve realized that you weren’t the victim of a cruel world but that you were the cruelty. Unable to except that you are wholly the problem while unable to revert back to your paradoxical life because you know now.

What a mind bender. You force your ego out of your conscious because you realise you’ve been creating the hatred you were unconsciously projecting onto others from your shadow self. Depending on the fragile nature of that persons mind, I can only imagine it would have to take a truely traumatic event to be the catalyst. I don’t know much of anything about psychology, but I know damaged people and tried to tiptoe them through these ideas only for them to shut me down. Maybe I’m the one in the wrong, maybe they’re in denial. I only hope they find a balance sooner rather than too late.. or never.

It’s not psychology. It’s a spiritual law. Everyone is your mirror. Because all is one and separation is a lie. This isn’t just for other people. The same goes for objects and animals. You project onto them because they are your mirror because you are them. So how do we stop projecting? You ask. Well simple. We heal. We understand this fundamental law (I call it the law of reflection.) and we use this to heal ourselves and others. I had a food addiction and I used this law to understand that I was trying to consume myself. I was running from my feeling about myself and using unhealthy food to swallow my unhealthy traits instead of just sitting with them and trying to understand and accept them. The unhealthy food was a direct reflection of myself and constantly eating it was a reflection of me constantly trying to push the issue down. Through this I learned the addiction wasn’t a singular issue: it was a symptom. Psychology may be right in some aspects but the issue is that we think our traumas and illnesses start in the mind when in fact they start in the soul. Personality disorders are a symptom of someone tapping out and letting the darker half of their soul rule instead of accepting it, healing it, and balancing their energies so they are conscious of themselves once again. They want a generation of people who think they cannot be healed and think everything is separate because that way they profit off of you. It starts in the soul’s shadow- not in the mind. Take it from someone who almost became a serial killer :)

I wonder if projection is always bad. If I recognise some behaviour of myself in others and point it out, its easy gor them to deflect that and say that I am just projecting, but that projection might very well be true. Lets say someone is telling a story and that person is bragging about expensive hotels and naming all the expensive things they bought... I might say that this person does that because they get their selfworth out of these aspects of life. I can say this because I have noticed the same tendency within myself in the past. Does that mean I am projecting and why would that be a bad thing? Its most likely true even tho the perso in question would probably deny it due to their own judgment about it.
