The psychology of conscience with Sean McGrath & Donald Carveth

Ойын-сауық

What’s the role of conscience, ethics, and morals in psychological development and individuation?
To investigate this question Berlin Psychoanalytic invited again the Toronto-based psychoanalyst Donald Carveth and Philosophy & Theology professor Sean J. McGrath for a conversation. As a base for our discussion, we have read the important 1958 Jung essay ‘A psychological view of conscience’. You can access it through the Substack page of our sister podcast, Psychology & The Cross and their Substack page.
Donald Carveth is the author of the book "The still small voice: Psychoanalytic reflections on guilt and conscience” (Routledge, 2013). He runs a popular KZread channel on psychoanalysis and also make some of his readings available on his website www.doncarveth.com/
Sean McGrath is a Canadian philosopher and Professor of Philosophy at Memorial University of Newfoundland. He is known for his published work in the history of philosophy and the philosophy of religion. Major single-authored works includes for example 'The Dark Ground of Spirit: Schelling and the unconscious'. There is also a separate podcast series, Secular Christ where Jakob Lusensky discusses questions related to Christianity today.
Jakob Lusensky is a Jungian psychoanalyst with a private practice in Berlin.
Music played in this episode is licensed under creativecommons.org: "Falling Angels" and "Golden teacher" by Ketsa.

Great Discussion! Sean cleared up quite a bit of confusion I've always had with Jung's ideas. As much as I can appreciate him. Thank you.

What of conscience ? Listening to this fascinating dialogue exploration until we get to 23:46 the duality and the desire Don maybe to see God through a human frame ,if all that happens is ultimately subtende by God and if God wrath is spoken of ,his hatred of sin, then surely this is God's shadow God,s hatred ? Somehow at the root of this desirable of terrible things, conscience ,a fear of God,s wrath put simplicitically in ancient minds a resonance from the dawn of civilization a fear of death, of something terrible that somehow is inextricably bound up with God's hatred ,God's...other side His shadow like the parental no ,like the neurotic disapproving Mother all bound up in this ,evoking this primal fear,of the terrible consequence of breaking the taboo,of going against what may not actually be definitive at all of any so called objective good or bad ,seen in of with greater understanding . Again Jung tried his best but to think it is a superficial act of conscience to discern spiritually is to place Jesus Christ on the same level as these men and misunderstand God and true spiritual conscience ,that is this is another level altogether, could say true discernment ,often born out of deep lengthy fermentation, prayer reflection and inner struggle, please Father take this cup from me no not my will but your Will most mortals wouldn't even be sensitive enough go envisage this let alone struggle with grief his deepest desire for survival or simply to avoid the agony here is the root of the dillema mind going back to the begginning with Martin Luther we have a partial view after examination but must trust it non the less , later we may see something else a more complete picture which even changes us to a different tangental perspective, in line with this omnipotent Will or the Will of the Divine creator of the Cosmos, God 💙 ❤ Lastly Icannot resist not only do we not need descriptions or names ,the mass ,the ceremonies where the symbolic is reified etc but ultimately they our very words confound us and multiply our confusion anc our dillema so it thus that the Carthusians insist on Silence ,the collective yet again our conditioning yet again of hubris disguised as a need ,the no god God of Buddhism of Arjuna and Emptiness Yoga 🧘‍♂️ meets the Christian monotheistically derived Spiritus Sanctus ,we are in danger all the time of this intellectual fabrication ,of what is beyond boghe Empty ov inherent existance but also full of or AS all appearance ala creation ,consciousness again or Spirit ,so sometimes its best nog to go down this road at all ,did Jesus wrestle with the 🤘 devil 😈 in the wilderness of dic he simply hallucinate iether Way what matters is he came through in the end unlike us who give in time and again ,oh man ...till we succumb to deathe..the cycle of ...God help us . Why Jesus said let your yes be yes and your no no ,of much elaboration there is no need, good night ...🤷‍♂️✝️💭🦢🧸

Jung was dualistic. Taoism says the way is between heaven and earth. So, we who strive to find the way are between nature and the unknown or God. Another image is past or earth, present or Tao and future or heaven.

Why did you chose a picture of Rosa Luxemburg as the profile picture? I would think a psychologist would be more appropriate.
