The "proof that drop D is heavy" riff... but now it's in F#
Музыка
Had quite a few people ask me to redo my "Proof that drop D is heavy" riff in a lower tuning. Well, here it is in drop F# on a 7 string using the exact same guitar tone. Which do you prefer?
Original drop D riff: • Proof that drop D is h...
I also tried something new with my lighting, does this look better? I have no idea what I'm doing with video, I just play guitar sometimes

I think this just prooves that you don't need to tune lower to still be heavy, but tuning lower still makes things heavier, great work man :)

Yeah, pretty much. You just have to write for the tuning you're in! Thanks! 😊
You did proved that Drop D is indeed heavy. Happens that drop F# is even more
I can't believe the original drop D one is somehow equally heavy as this.

I always find it so cool seeing how this stuff works. It's definitely not as simple as lower = heavier. There are so many variables and it's so cool seeing how it plays out when you transpose a riff.
Really interesting series ! I listened to D first, then F#. I'm tempted to say none is heavier than the other, but the tuning changes the atmosphere of the riffs. Hard to put words on it, but I'd say F# sounds brutal whereas D sounds powerful. Both are heavy. And to my surprise, I prefer drop D ! More impact, more dynamic, more energy

Love hearing thoughts like this! I definitely prefer this in drop D as well, but they both bring their own thing to the table!
Impressive! Very nice! Now let's see it in Double Drop C.

There's now a "Proof that E standard is heavy" video for you all to judge. kzread.info/dash/bejne/Zp9rptuwgdGzqNY.html
I think this is equally heavy as the drop D version, but I prefer the drop D one because you can actually hear everything. Also the higher tuning is more *gross* sounding to me, while this is more *thunderous*
@itsMEADOWS

Yeah! I agree. The dissonance is more clear on D so it's more gross like you said. This one definitely has less audible dissonance. Thunderous is a great description!

I woudn't say that tuning lower makes a song "heavier" but ill be damned if it doesn't make that bottom string 0-0-0 sound gnarly

Pain indeed. 😓 Yeah, I'm the same here. It was written for drop D and I think it sounds more rich in that tuning as a result, especially when it comes to the harmonics. If I was writing this for F# initially it would have turned out very differently.

@@itsMEADOWS yea... droping it 9 chromatic tones is a bit extreme. normally i just mess with 1-2 half steps when writing riffs for my own music lol

this is absolutely lovely my dude. what gauge strings are you rocking for this? i do Drop F# on a 30" baritone and I'm using (high to low) 16-22-38-52-68-80 but tis way to many tensions , but also sounds neat. but I agree, really any tuning can sound boss and heavy. I do love me a great Drop D guitar as well. great job and sound, my dude.

Thanks man! I appreciate it. I'm using 72s on this one. 80s on a 30" is insane haha. Definitely shouldn't need them that thick on a baritone. Highly recommend using a string tension calculator online to figure out a normal tension and gauge for your tuning. But if it's a 30" baritone you should be fine with something in the 60s for sure!

@@itsMEADOWS hey! thanks for the reply back! I actually did just that before I seen your reply. StringJoy has a really good one. and I found a solid set. 15-74, they even took some time to recommend that set as well. I'll probably still adjust as I go. I generally like my strings tighter than usual, but not overly tight, like currently.
@itsMEADOWS

Oh perfect! Hopefully they're right for you! I wouldn't mind a bit more tension on this guitar, but it's a 72 string already and anything above that feels unpleasantly large to me. But you have another 5 or so inches on your guitar's scale so you really should be able to drop a few gauges comfortably while retaining a fair bit of tension.

Hello, any issue with tuning strandberg 7 string down to drop F#? Thanks
@itsMEADOWS
Ай бұрын
Hey! Look it can definitely do it but here I was running a .10 - .74 8 string set with the .64 thrown out and it held tune and sounded fine but it was definitely pretty floppy still. Maybe it would be fine with thicker strings but I don't like anything above a .74 personally. They're amazing guitars but outside of the 8 string models I don't think Strandbergs quite have the scale length for super low tunings.
I know I am late! but yeah, it got better in F# than in G# as I asked hahah

actually I think drop A is the heaviest 😏

The Drop D version is heavier
I suppose all these videos like "drop d is heavy" are made that way: you write a riff in low tuning and then you pitch it up. Of course there's nothing wrong with that.
@itsMEADOWS

Nope. I did not do that. I wrote it all in drop D and did that video. Had no intention of doing it in a lower tuning but enough people asked me to so I did. 🤷♂️

@@itsMEADOWS I mean it's not about how low your tuning, it's about how good are you at riffing. If the riff is sick (and the yours one are absolutely is) it'll work no matter what your tuning is. However, most of modern metal musicians prefer lower tuning (and I personally too)
@itsMEADOWS
9 ай бұрын
Yeah you're right, it's definitely about the riff more than the tuning. I definitely like lower tunings a lot as well but I also really like normal tunings. I have my two main 6 strings in standard and drop D to give me plenty of range!
Downtuning has very little to do with heaviness. Suffocation and Dying Fetus play in C# Standard, Decrepit Birth is D standard etc.. all three are far heavier than any modern metal/djent trash on an 8 string.
