Toy Story 4 has earned great reviews, but for me, the latest outing for Woody, Buzz Lightyear and Bo Peep has a real problem.

    They're all pretty strong films for sure. I simply love them all together and hard to decide which one I truly love. If I have to pick one, I have to say Toy Story 1. It was a straightforward story and lesson that ran deep and hit hard. The dark and light side of toys being literally next door to each other. It was a world really showing the life of a Toy and how much Woody's world changed in an instant when Buzz comes along. Especially Pizza Planet and outside of the house. It becomes more and more clear how out of place/"outdated" He really is. And hurts more when he confesses this to Buzz when both finally hit their low point. Toy Story 2 was pretty close though. Because not everything lasts and the things old can be pretty valuable as time goes by. You can cash in on it, display it, or use it till it time to let go. And that it's not necessarily have to grim fate. Woody has a trip to memory of his toy line's golden years. And almost gives into to be at the museum to be immortalized as a legacy of kids around the world than just one: his personal kid. To be stolen out of your childhood for glory can be a nasty fate one could later regret. The things we love that will grow out of or just simply expire its use, doesn't have to mean now it's all over and it was all just a phase. They'll be remembered as one of the significant and fond memories made with throughout our lifetime. Holding a personal legacy, A history you alone hold, Having sentimental value than what they appear to be compare to others like friends or family seeing it nothing more but pieces of junk. It was a strong hitoff. Toy Story 3 was a very strong moment when it was time to say goodbye. And a lot of us growing with them actually did get old and recently graduated out of school, moving onward to adulthood like Andy. It's a realization that we don't need the things we used to need in our childhood. But it reminds the message that letting go doesn't me we truly forget them in the end. We'll always have them around inside our minds.. and hearts. Cause our inner kid never truly goes away. And Toy Story 4 was it's own thing and it was great. Finding purpose after years of doing the same thing. Feeling pushed the sidelines and nothing to do with your life, what now? Not to mention the love of your life is out there. And Woody sees an opportunity to get her back... but possibly not in the way he could imagined. Woody's purpose was the big thing in this movie and the newer toys complemented that. How most of them desires to be with a kid and be played with. Have the memories Woody has throughly enjoyed in his life. He gives a piece of himself onto others to impart to so they can make it happen. (Even literally.) Woody knows his role with Bonnie is becoming clear he is no longer needed. So he realizes that the more he spent time with Bo, the more he couldn't take a chance to lose her again. So in the end, He steps in the new world to join her. And like Andy, He turns back and says goodbye to all those he befriended along the way and that they're always be with him. His inner voice telling him they're always be together in memory for infinity and beyond.

    he wasn't very involved in the (what we can assume) final movie and he kinda came off as stupid. he didnt have much/if any character arch at all and just seemed somewhat there for the sake of giving buzz screen time. yeah the movie was about woody and HIS progression as a character, (and i love my man woody so im not complaining about the movie revolving around him) but it felt like very little effort was put in to giving him a comfortable resolution and end to the franchise. but i still love the movie anyway haha

    @@WednesdayWorks I'm fairly certain that it was intentional. There was an obvious woke SJW slant in this movie, in that it set loyalty to "what people tell you, you should be", against loyalty to going against the grain. Buzz was programmed to say the things his voice box says, and so by him listening to his recordings as a means of making his decisions, it indicated that he lives within the "confines" of "what other people say he can be". His role in the movie was literally just to reinforce that point.

    As widely hated as Cars 2, Monsters University and Incredibles 2 are, I can still get at least some enjoyment out of them. Toy Story 4 however is TERRIBLE! They downgraded the characters we’ve loved since 1995/6 (subject to your country of residence or whether you got to see Toy Story 1 overseas before it was released where you live), the plot feels cheap, the film in general feels VERY straight-to-DVD but Woody leaving the group, despite what he said at the end of Toy Story 2, turned this 4th instalment from debatedly bad to HORRIFIC. This is by far one of my MOST HATED Disney movies EVER! This even includes those Disney Channel teen flicks. This even includes most of the straight-to-video stuff. If they NEEDED a 4th Toy Story movie, they should’ve made a prequel that shows how Andy and Woody came to be in the first place! If this was the best they could do in making a 4th main line movie, they should’ve just left it on the cutting room floor! Even that Black Friday reel is better than TS4! I ESPECIALLY can’t believe I asked for, and got, TS4 on 4K Blu Ray that Christmas! I guess I asked for it because: 1. Part of me still liked it 2. I didn’t want to leave a hole in my Pixar collection But the more I thought about it, I found myself DEEPLY regretting asking for it that Christmas! It was made even worse by the fact that my country’s current Right Wing government won a snap election just before Christmas that year, causing me to question whether Christmas was even worth it anymore altogether! I just left that TS4 4K Blu Ray on my shelf, never to be watched. Well kinda, I asked myself a few times if I actually did like the movie, but before long, I decided I didn’t. Wasn’t until around September/October 2021 when I FINALLY got round to donating that unwanted Christmas present to a local charity shop! On the whole, as a lifelong Disney fan, it REALLY upsets me to see what the company is like now, caring more about money than quality entertainment! Live action Lion King is so bad, I honestly would rather watch BIO DOME!

    I remember the director of Toy Story 3 saying he was terrified of making a bad Toy Story movie. The director of Toy Story 4 did just that. It's just disappointing that Toy Story 3 ended it perfectly and Toy Story 4 ruined it. It's a problem with Pixar in general. Nearly every film used to be amazing original ideas. Now they just seem to make poor sequels to guarantee Disney money. You used to go to the cinema and know a Pixar film would be incredible. Now you're not very sure. Inside Out was probably the last very good one.

    Yes, but time changes and the entire point of the film is that the toys become less relevant for kids as they get/create new toys and they start leaving the others behind. It wouldn't have made sense to make a fourth film about the exact same characters. It just would not have been as entertaining. This fourth movie, I laughed harder than in any of the previous films. I thoroughly enjoyed the plot. The only thing I thought was a bummer was Buzz Lightyear didn't get nearly enough screen time. I wish the movie was longer but as it's essentially made for children, I don't think they could have sit through more than an hour and forty minutes. Still, the plot to me made perfect sense and I don't think this is the end of the franchise. Woody didn't give up on being a toy for one kid - he will see the world with the toy woman he loves while being a toy to many children! So long as no child find off with him forever!

    The Relationship between Woody and Bo isn't the same in the 4th. In order to make Bo a bigger character they gutted both Woody and Buzz and made them 2nd rate versions of their Toy Story 1 and 2 characters. They are much weaker roles. You also don't feel a strong connection between Woody and Bo because she clearly cares more about her sheep than about Woody. Even at the end there is no emotional pull between them when Woody prepares to Leave, Bo just dismisses it and says goodbye. Then he chooses her and its not as powerful because she really didn't seem to care one way or the other. She can clearly live without him so there's no emotion towards him leaving her. It could have been so much better and more gut wrenching, but its ended up being kind of so-so. It didn't hit you hard like Toy Story 3 did, where the toys accept their inevitable fate and that hits you hard because the toys you love are about to die. And the ending hits hard because it showed that Woody was right and that the belief he had that Woody would never forget him was true; Andy really did care.

    Bo and Woody’s connection in Toy story 1 and 2 was much better because they bounced off each other nicely. Woody was erratic and constantly worrisome since he was the leader, and Bo balanced him out with her calm and collected nature. Then this movie comes out and completely undermines her original character. The beginning of the movie where Bo and Woody plot to save another toy is just so out of character for her specifically. That wasn’t how Bo was. She wasn’t an action-packed toy (which makes sense since she’s literally made out of porcelain, her original personality fit her design perfectly and that’s why she typically stayed in the back away from the action). I could forgive the movie if they showed how she originally was in the flashback with her calming Woody about something, and then being given up made her change her personality to be bolder. But nope. This movie tells US that we’re remembering it wrong and that Bo Peep was always like this.

    That description fits 90% of all successful franchises today. Star Wars, Star Trek, Dr. Who, Masters of the Universe, and and and, everywhere are strong women that make the established, beloved characters play second fiddle in their own movies/shows/franchises and degrades and humiliates them to make the women appear more powerful. Modern day feminism ruins everything it touches.

    It's much less of the "no emotion" and moreso respect in Woody's decision. You can still see Bo's face sadden as Woody drops down and I'd rather have what we got rather than an over-the-top, cliche confession to force Woody to stay against his own original choice. And I love that it was Buzz that got Woody to see what he wanted for himself for once and got him to stay. Like a true friend would, letting people walk their separate paths when they need to, instead of clinging onto them and in a sense hold them back.

    I don't think you get it. Woody went through an arc. He was dedicated to Andy because Andy NEEDED him. Bonnie didn't need Woody; he was forgotten about and whenever he was lost, he went unnoticed. After being loyal to Andy, who needed him, he is now a fulfilled toy in a situation that isn't right for him. Instead of being with a kid that doesn't care for him and not having a purpose, he can help other toys find their purpose while bringing himself happiness while doing it. That's why he changed. Look at the character development; in 4 movies, it's expected for characters to change and have development, or else it wouldn't be a good movie.

But nope. This movie tells US that we’re remembering it wrong and that Bo Peep was always like this. My ass she was. She wasn’t even likeable either. I love her new design, but that’s completely overshadowed by her smug drill sergeant personality. What would’ve made sense is if she did become bolder but also kept that calm nurturing side to her character intact as well. Her new personality just completely clashes with Woody’s. In the flashback, their dynamic doesn’t feel natural in any way either and it only gets worse as she drags Woody around in the movie, acts smug about her new way of living and her new friends and yells at him when he tries to save another toy. Woody and fricking Buzz had more chemistry in the first movie (where they argued for 3/4ths of it) than Woody and Bo Peep did in this one, and yet Woody still leaves his found family in the end for Bo and her unlikeable new friends?? Even if Woody didn’t feel as though he had a purpose with Bonnie, you still can’t convince me that he willingly would’ve left all his friends he’s been with since Andy was a kid to clap Bo Peep’s cheeks. Goddamn. They turned my boy into a straight up simp in the name of subverting expectations.

This certainly ain’t the same buzz lightyear who gave woody that speech from toy story 2 about being loved by a kid to convince woody to come back because according to this movie, Buzz needs his voice box to tell him what to do.

    I think one of the problems with Toy Story 4, is the new ideas it introduces makes the audience subconsciously question the reality of the universe they inhabit. In the first 3 movies, they very carefully ride the line and manage to main your suspension of disbelief by not focusing too much on why or how the toys are the way they are. There's no magical folk lore or actual confirmation outside of their perspective that they are living beings. By keeping the premise simple and not dwelling on how they came to be, we don't question it and we understand the obvious conclusion that a sentient toy would want to be played with. Toy Story 4 focuses far too much on this. Even simple things like Woody outwardly philosophizing over the concept of having a conscience or debating a selfish existence of exploration and living with someone he cares about, really muddies the idea of why they're alive in the first place. When you treat characters like Woody with deep human interests, life goals and romantic interests for too long, when you have him choosing a life alone with his love interest and exploring the world, the audience subconsciously begins to question "wait, why is Woody alive if he's this nuanced and can live independently of being a toy", with characters like Forky's creation also muddying those thoughts. It starts to bring questions to the table that make the world and the toy's "life" more of a focal point, when really, the less said the better. You also touched upon it in the video, but I also have a problem with Bo-Peep's story arch for this reason, but also because it takes Jessie's story arch from Toy Story 2, and flips it's conclusion on it's head. Really spoiling the themes of the previous movies. Then of course there's also the ending of Toy Story 3 almost retconned with this new direction by making Bonnie betray Andy's trust. Woody was never even going to be included in his toy donation until she showed how much she loved him and Andy very reluctantly gave him up, when the previous movies implied it was a long-term family toy. Toy Story 4 isn't a completely terrible movie, but it's has too many half baked ideas, sullies some previous installments themes and more frustratingly gets worse the more you think about it.

  • @unefleurdelalune8767

    @unefleurdelalune8767

    Yes. A toy without a kid is like french fry without salt. What kind of "life" can they enjoy in the great wide world anyway? They can't enjoy trying new foods/drinks or perform any other life functions so what are they going to spend their lives doing? Seems empty. Which come to think of it, is exactly what a life lived in service of self is. Helping others gives meaning to life. This movie seems to think toys doing absolutely nothing more than merely existing (again they can't really DO anything to enjoy life. They're toys with no biological needs or functions) is a lovely prospect. Whereas TS2 adeptly showed the folly of that. This movie is the equivalent of Woody choosing to go to the museum. Would people have applauded that ending as Woody choosing happiness/retirement/fulfillment? Why not and importantly why now?

  • @Benjamoose

    @Benjamoose

    4 жыл бұрын

    unefleurdelalune Great response. I particularly like the analogy of “Woody choosing the museum”, really well put and really hammers things home. There’s other issues too, like Buzz being an intelligent problem solver and second in command to Woody in 2 (leads the rescue for Woody and also decodes the license plate) and the same in 3 (escaping the trash bag, etc). Convincing the others that no toy be left behind. To acting like a doofus (almost pre-knowledge of being a toy) in 4, and actually getting mad and disappointed at Woody for wanting to go back for Forky in the antique store, telling him to give up.

    AND THE TIMELINE MAKES NO SENSE. Toy Story 3 took place ten or so years after Toy Story 2. The original fans of the forts two had grown up, matured and had turned into teenagers. Toy Story 3 used this to their advantage, they made the story mature for the teens but still likeable for the kids. Toy Story 4 was made nine years after 3, but takes place maximum a year after. This messes up the timeline and it doesn't feel real. This is why in film its important to have consistency

    I actually really like that the fourth one exists. The first 3 still make a perfect "Andy-centric" trilogy but the story wasn't done being told. 3's happy ending was that the toys all got a new kid to play with them - so what happens when the new kid grows up too? They needed a fourth entry to demonstrate that in this universe, toys can find a purpose in life outside of complete servitude to a child god. Woody has now broken out of a cycle and he's learned that his way of thinking has been flawed for decades. It's incredible that a kid's movie has the balls to pull off character development like that.

    "Toy Story 4 teaches us that being wanted and being alone are both equally valid." Except Woody isn't alone. And he likely doesn't make the decision to leave Bonnie if Bo Peep isn't on the other end of it to be with. That makes it more of a "If you can't be with the one you love, be with the one you're with." message. Which still has to do with being 'someone's' as Woody likely isn't doing it, if Bo Peep isn't waiting for him and to do it with him. So Woody nor Bo Peep are alone at the end of this.

    To be honest I thought Woody’s choice made complete sense. He was there for Andy as a kid, and Andy had a tough time letting go of Woody because Woody was there for him during his childhood, and letting go of Woody was completing his childhood while moving on to becoming an adult. Bonnie sort of forgot about Woody, and it even shows towards the end of the movie. Woody has fulfilled his purpose as a toy, and now he has a choice to live his own life with bo.

    icecream hero I mean he did abandon Bucky, the one person who Steve seems to put above all else, like he sacrificed his relationship with Tony simply for Bucky and you can’t easily say that he would do that for anyone else, so for him to just abandon his formerly brainwashed friend who was forcibly turned into an assassin against his will so for him to hook up with his former girlfriend from the past can seem a little out of character. While I myself don’t really mind it I can understand why some people might not, especially since this ending kinda makes Cap’s arc about accepting that the past happened and that he should move forward with his life kinda pointless, since he just decides to leave his new life behind along with all of his probably traumatized for life friends and his maybe girlfriend Sharon that he forgets exists so he can get go back to his past life and just ignores everything including his wife’s organization being infiltrated by HYDRA and his best friend being brainwashed to be an assassin all while he finally gets laid. It can be seen as overly selfish to some.

    I think you're completely missing the point of the film. Woody isn't giving up on having a kid at all, he's giving up the idea that he has to just dedicate his life to one kid. Yes, Bo Peep is off "seeing the world," but it's established that she's also being a toy to multiple children wherever she goes. All of the toys in the carnival who are free feel this way, excited and reporting about various groups of children in different areas that they can play with. Gabby Gabby's arc is not that she doesn't get a kid and then gets a kid. Once again, it's that she's obsessed with ONE kid, and she learns that she can be a toy to any kid if she opened herself up to it. She was obsessed with one specific image that didn't pan out, but when she opens herself up to new chances, it ends up working in her favor. Woody's choice at the end of the film reflects that he doesn't have to be the sole toy that's always there for Bonnie. He's spent his entire life being Andy's core toy, and even not as loved by Bonnie, he still puts himself in an enormous amount of danger just to retrieve Forky and make her happy. His realization at the end is that being given up by one child is part of a journey any toy will face. You may not always be one specific kid's toy, and you have the right to explore new things. Your video seems to look at the details of the plot in the fourth film at a very surface level. Anyways, sorry for the essay and still enjoy the content. I just don't think this analysis was very well thought out.

    Lukas Gordon Yeah, I really think it is unfair to call Woody selfish for 'abandoning' his friends, whatever the hell that means. He didn't abandon Bonnie or his friends, and didn't really want to leave them, but his point of view was beginning to alter just like it did for Bo, in which these past nine years of her missing really changed her outlook on life and became determined and independent. Even knowing how dangerous it can be for lost toys, which is why she responded harshly in some situations, because parts of the outer world are not like a kids room or a game to play. Bo's time in a kids room was over, and it was becoming that way for Woody who finally realized this in the end when he knew that going back to Bonnie would be pointless and would only mean being in the closet for a decade or two until moving day. And its not really fair to try and force some toys to think the only way to happiness is in a kids room, because ideals can change, or kept in different ways than how it used to be decades ago. I mean sure Bonnie may not play with him anymore, but he still at least wants her to be happy with Forky which is why he tries to help him. His bond with Bonnie wasn't as strong as it was with Andy, and realized some kids love toys differently and move on from one when new ones come and go. So it makes sense for him to finally stay behind and Buzz assuring that Bonnie will be alright, handing his sheriff badge to Jessie. Even the thought of sacrificing his voice box to Gabby made it see how unselfish he is to help another toy who was misguided and lost. I know how hard it can be for someone to move on from one person while being there for another, your heart being in a different place. He didn't want to leave the gang without saying goodbye or give a good explanation, but maybe they too were realizing what he might have been struggling to tell them.

Like you said they might have ruined all the other toy story series themes. Loyalty was my favorite and main characteristic of woody but when he gives that up, it felt weird. I liked his loyalty and I never thought it was a bad thing, it was the thing that makes him so lovely. So even the movie was fun, it left me a little hole. (maybe I'm going too far but I don't think a "following your heart " is always the answer. But these days too many movies has that theme , and even toy story 4. I'm not saying it's bad, but I think not all of them have to be that them.) The reduced role of other main cast was also unsatisfied. Toy Story 3 did that so well, but 4 didn't live up to that( to me I guess). Well, at least this video did made me feel better. Keep up the Great work!

Something about her was just entirely off the entire time. She didn’t come off as an independent adventurer scouring the outside world on her own, she came off like a drill sergeant who should have been wearing a military uniform. At parts she was just plain mean. She was literally yelling for a good portion of the movie. I remember realizing if it was one of the male characters acting like she was they would just seem cold and cruel. And that’s not something that feels right for Bo Peep as we know her, though my memories aren’t the most clear.

    I think, for me at least, it feels right when you imagine a hypothetical alternate ending where Woody DOES stay with Bonnie. Woody maintains the same loyalty he had with Andy to Bonnie, and he spends his life bending over backwards, putting himself (and often, his fellow toys) in danger, all to make a child happy...but all for a child that simply isn't happy with him, and will through no fault of her own never know the lengths he's going for her sake. At best, a few years down the line he ends up being lost anyway. At worst, he ends up unceremoniously broken or sold or donated, because Bonnie just doesn't want to play with him. And its not like its her fault. She doesn't know Woody's alive, and plus, she's FIVE. What kid hasn't been enamored with a new toy for a week and then never really played with it again? I didn't think the movie contradicted Toy Story 3 so much as it was a deconstruction Woody's character. He was always loyal to his kid and willing to bend the rules to do what's right by them. He had to, because he was the leader of Andy's toys. And at the end of the day, all his hard work was justified by the fact that Andy loved him, and his leadership was rewarded because Andy loved his other toys too. But this isn't the same kid. Andy was exceptional, so of course Bonnie doesn't have the same interests in him as he did. Her toys already HAD a leader who knows how the house runs and how Bonnie thinks before Woody ever arrived. Woody's clinging to a purpose that just isn't there anymore. Staying with Bo, traveling with the carnival and helping the carnival prizes find kids IS probably the best ending he really could have. Not only is he making still kids happy, but he's also giving HIMSELF happiness too. And I know this is a long comment already, but in a world where injustice is broadcasted to us on a daily basis, and activism is rampant, and there's just so many things that need to be fixed and done and said...I think that last point is important.

    This is a great point to argue! This is why I'm not AGAINST Woody's new decision to show himself some love with freedom. But throughout all of these comments, I'm still going to argue from a writer's point of view that the turn in character development was still too sudden. It was done too quickly with just one movie. I would have been more excited to see Woody set off if A) it had taken place over events that stretched at least another movie and B) if Woody had gotten some more of his buddies to go with him, especially Buzz because that's his best friend right after Andy. Also... about kids being enamored with a toy for a week and then forgetting them... I guess most kids do that, but I don't remember doing so. I remember that if I had no real interest in a toy, I normally just put it away and never opened it in the first place. I am pretty sure I remember nearly every toy I had that I loved a lot though and the number of them goes over 30 (I was that one antisocial kid at school who was still a popular kid because the other kids loved to come over and use them for their amount of cool and popular toys, sadly)... Six of them were Woody dolls of varying sizes for a long, long time.

    @@CosplayCore They've put all of WWII into a single movie. War and Peace was done as a single movie. Bonnie got Woody in a box of toys. She already had favorite toys. He's a boy's toy and an old-fashioned boy's toy at that. Woody had never been Bonnie's favorite toy. They spent most of this movie showing how difficult it was for Woody to come to terms with the change of his life, and that was close to too long--it was starting to get boring before the audience was let in on the fact that the ennui was intentional.
