The Problem with Sequel Anime

Фильм және анимация

It feels like more and more anime are getting sequels nowadays, but is that actually a good thing?
Yes, mostly.
But trapped under the reactionary yoke of the seasonal model is anyone ever going to talk about a sequel that's not Jujutsu Kaisen?

Great video but I completely disagree with the implication that Chivalry is a "great show".

The secret is this was a Dr. stone video and I went on such a long tangent about this that I just turned it into its own video lol

I kinda feel this way about shows of seasons long gone. My gripe with the seasonal anime community is that it disincentivises going back to watch older shows. All that matters is what's currently airing, and I think that's kind of sad. When I got into anime in the early 2010s, it was much more common for older shows to still be a part of the discussion. Sure, plenty of people were talking about the hot new Attack on Titan during spring 2013, but I was still hearing about stuff like Deadman Wonderland (2011) at the same time. And that's just one example. I think it's part of what's burnt me out of keeping up with the new shows because it feels like even if there's something amazing, no one will care about it in a couple weeks. I may have found O Maidens in Your Savage Season (2019) to be a masterpiece, but everyone else has already forgotten about it; they've moved on to the next shiny new toy. There used to be a feeling that if you missed a great show from the past season, you were encouraged to go back and see it. Now the opposite is true.

This has always been a very interesting thing for me to see because I feel like it's something I only typically see in the medium of anime. If I'm thinking movies or games, I feel like people typically look at sequels as the safe bet to purchase and keep going with. But, like you mentioned, until "the one moment" happens that gets everybody talking in the sequel happens, it seems it loses all that attention it had.

Games feels like the closest comparison but even then I know people who will just play a sequel without playing the first game so idk it really is its own unique thing for anime

I feel the opposite. I find often people claim a movie sequel of a good series is worst just by default. They always expect so much more. Even in cases of good sequels, toy story 2, john wick 2, spiderman 2, captain america 2...if the first part wasnt good they are happy but with anime if the first 2 eps arent the best in the genre people quit. Season 2 is where shows find their footing so its annyoing that people no longer give a series a chance forcing manga to fast track and then you get complaints that you felt nothing for the characters when they die since death in stories is a stand for quick engagement. Without it people say it was ok i dont wanna read it. And my biggest complaint...people who say ugh this shonen is not ground breaking...you know what ground breaking ideas do...they create short series, people arent into shonen for short series, we wanna live and accomplish with the characters. I get it since shonen haters are usually drama lovers and they come from people focused on what we usually watch in the west, mostly well drama with little action focus due to budget so character writing is the most important to them, fair. Stories should have that. But I hate that people think action doesnt tell a story. Its the worst critic...and I hear it so much from youtubers and it spreads to viewers...action is how you progress a story...writers are told to use action. A fight vs frieza and goku isnt just generic garbage...its a guy who fights against someone who subjugated his species for centuries and they have a libirator (showcased by vegeta plain and simple but people overlook it) to save them...on a dying planet of peaceful people...where they can grant wishes...poetic but overlooked cause punch bad. If it was in a slow paced series they'd say its mind blowingly deep

Great video, it really is a shame that more people didn't watch Dr. Stone S3, and its happening this season with Blue Exorcist S3 (an anime which has so many levels of why ppl don't watch it anywyas). But I also see myself harder to catch up with stuff with so many sequels piling up. Other than the ones you mentioned in the video, i still have to watch Saints Power is Opmnipotent S2., I loved S1 and got excited it got a sequel, but still haven't gotten around to watching it. Seasonal hype is awesome when you're in it, but for all the beloved anime sequels that are getting left behind in the dust, I feel bad for them :(

I never thought of it like that, but, yeah actually a lot of discussion can often derive into just source readers speaking over everyone else because hey, they know the future and we don't and I can't even lie that's also been me . Its just really fun getting to discuss that kind of stuff sometimes at least if its in good faith and not actively trying to spoil the next season or give expectations in that way. Everyone hyped the hell out of JJK S2 saying its the best part, etc, and that certainly set the tone in a way that yeah kinda pumps the brakes out of a natural excitement for me cuz okay, I guess this is the best part I suppose.

I think when it sticks to hype it can do wonders for a sequel but when it turns to being mad about “not doing the source justice” (often justified!) it kills a sequel or really any adaptation faster than anything I’ve seen

This is how I felt when Magus Bride Season 2 came out. Season 2 is great, amazing, made me cry and sob damn near every single episode. It's unreasonably good and one of the greatest anime I've seen ever, and on par with my other 2 favorites for 2023, G-witch and Bang Dream It's MyGO!!!! G-witch didn't have this problem since season 1 was an original anime from rather recently, so while I'm sure there were plenty who quit after season 1 most people stayed (and it's mega popular anyways it's gundam) (watch MyGo please it's not a sequel I knew literally nothing about bandori before hand please trust me it's a fucking masterpiece god the writing is so good and dw I was also annoyed by anon's voice in the first few episodes it's like the best written anime I've seen possibly ahhh)

I’m ashamed to admit that even though Dr Stone was one of my favorite shows of 2019, in the year of our lord 2024… I still haven’t watched season 2 yet :( I am super happy though about the fact we are getting more and more complete adaptations nowadays
