the problem with fashion week & runway "trends" (does everyone else know something that I don't?)

Welcome to my rant.
Is it just me or do most "trends" from fashion week that get written about fall into one of these categories:
- has already been going on and is already widely accepted
- extremely vague
- unwearable and unrelatable
I quite like consuming fashion week content and watching runway shows, but in terms of "inspiration" and "trend forecasting" I think we give it too much credit 😬 ...sorry.
Would love to hear your thoughts in the comments.

I completely agree with you. Runway fashion is, to me, complete bullcrap. If it's not about actual wearable clothing, it should at least be artistic, but at this point it just seems to be different for the sake of being "original". What's wrong with making beautiful, not necessarily aimed at the general public, gowns, suits, etc.? Making a model walk around in an inflatable pool is just ridiculous 💀

I think you’re spot on. I’ve noticed that usually by the time I see the more traditional fashion content creators talk about new/upcoming trends from runway shows, I’ve already been seeing & hearing about them for months from the street/personal/TikTok fashion creators. Obviously TikTok fashion has plenty of its own issues, but I see trendy celebrity fashion trickle down more than any high fashion.

I second this! I feel like with every coming season, catwalks and publications like Vogue are merely playing catch up to what has already been circulating amongst the masses. Maybe part of the change is due to the rise of ticktock and growth of fashion influencers... but in the past I used to be more surprised and felt that fashion designers and magazines were setting the tone for coming seasons, now I read these trend articles and get whiplash (haven't ballet flats/bows/tweed jackets/tunic vests etc... been trending for the last several seasons? And white as trending for spring? Groundbreaking...

Thank you, such an inspiring video. Especially about just the concept of "trends" in general, which doesn't make any sens today, at least I feel like people around me value much more uniqueness and self-expression than fitting in with a certain trend.

The trickle down concept was prob the prominent direction fashion went before social media. The only way it was communicated in mass before was fashion magazines, who were catering to the fashion industry to stay in business themselves. Maybe the exception back then was countercultures which was the point. Fashion was not as democratized until maybe the past decade it seems.
