She then offered to "show him around the estate" at breakneck speed in her beloved Land Rover, with the king begging her to slow down through his interpreter. Now that would have made a funny episode!

If I was writing this show this is some of what I would have done: - Written Camilla as a side chick type and show her repeatedly attempting to be like Diana but failing. -Mocked Phillip’s tendency to make inappropriate comments. -Portrayed Anne as a total badass. She kind of is but I would over exaggerate it. -Write the Queen as someone who never voices an opinion or takes a side because she was very good at seeming neutral, so that could be turned into a joke. Like her being neutral and diplomatic about trivial things like what to have for dinner. - I would have come up with some joke about the ban on garlic in the palace. Maybe a staff member would smuggle some in and it would cause a great stink and they would evacuate

@@Maw0 I think the reason is more simple : money. - Pick a famous family : you don't need introduction : money saved! - Use generic jokes and crass humor : no need to spend time reserching for real life anecdotes (I never heard of the Queen personnally driving a Saudi Prince around Balmoral... but from what I heard from her, this sounds in character). - Steal a familiar format so that your famous characters need even less introduction since people are used to them + no need to create personnalities and relationship with them : it's already done! The shows reeks of corporate lazyness and shameless cashgrab.

I read the word saberspark as sephiroth for a split second so it looked like “I can’t believe sephiroth killed the queen.”

Parodies work by exaggerating reality. Had it been a show centering around, say, Charles' increasingly desperate attempts to get the throne from the queen, that could have worked. That would have made sense as it's a humorous exaggeration of how long he's been waiting in the wings for his turn. We know very little about the real prince George because HE'S A CHILD and doesn't have much of a public persona, so what exactly are we parodying here? The show had him obsessed with his social media status ... why? Has George publicly displayed a particular obsession with social media? Not to my knowledge. All this show did was take the names and likeness of real people but just wrote whole other characters for them, and then tries to pass itself off as a parody.

"I'm more familiar than most with the Royal Family. [...] So I know about Princess *Diane*." What can I say but... Diana.

I like offensive humor, but there's a difference between offensive humor that is really funny and offensive humor that's legitimately hurtful. It's difficult to describe the difference in words I guess, but when the humor comes from a place of legitimate hate, you can tell. This show came from a place of legitimate hate. You can tell.

That’s exactly why I love South Park. Because it seems like it comes from a place of lightheartedness rather than anger. It’s just poking fun at things that need to be poked fun at, and hey, most people can get a laugh out of that.

Seeing shows like this makes me glad that we still have some good adult animated shows like Duckman, F is for Family, Bojack Horseman, etc.

By the minute mark, one is forced to retract any negative opinions they've said on Family Guy, praying that the next scene transition will show Peter. But it doesn't. And the next scene doesn't. I am absolutely floored by the voice cast of this show. They have Orlando Bloom, Dan Stevens, Francis De La Tour and two Game of Thrones alumni, some of which are doing pretty spot-on impressions, and they absolutely squandered them. It's not the worst part by any stretch, but it's just an extra level of weird. How did this get made?!

To be fair you can’t turn on telly these days without seeing someone who was in Game of Thrones. Fucking surprised to hear the rest of those names though

The only character I like from the show is the Prince's Butler, Owen (who ironically has my name), mainly due to how he actually has an episode that moves away from the normal shitty format for an episode that actually FEELS interesting. He actually has depth, and you can feel how he actually cares about the Prince (George, I think his name is?). And over the course of the episode, George just continuously calls him so he can talk to him, and we even see him have some development as a character. And it makes me even angrier at the other episodes, because WHY THE HELL COULDN'T THEY BE LIKE THAT ONE?! They knew how to make a good episode, yet they didn't even bother to attempt to make a good season.

My mother was first generation canadian from england so I grew up constantly bombarded by english things, royal family, shows, nursery rhymes, stories. One of the few good things she did was teach me those crazy nursery rhymes

I feel like this show could've been a lot better with 2 things: better writing and having a maid or butler or something being the main character. A servant for the royal family that works in Buckingham palace would probably be a better fit than not only a real person, but a child as the main character. Heck, you could even make up a British Prime Minister or something for the main character!

The thing is, a cartoon satire on the Royal Family could work really well. There's so much material to work with that would actually be reasonably true to the real people. They're a bunch of idiosyncratic and often quite bizarre figures, leading a lifestyle that's totally alien to the average person but also trying to be relatable and responsible. Every so often, one of them says or does something totally embarrassing. That's sitcom gold right there. Basically Arrested Development with palaces. But this show seems to have been made by people who honestly knew nothing about the Royal Family and did no research beyond skimming the first few paragraphs on Wikipedia. I just feel like, why make it about real people if you're not actually going to base the characters on them, or make jokes that actually relate to them? I can't even get upset about them making fun of Prince George, because the character has nothing to do with the real child.

I can't help but feel more sorry for Prince Philip than Queen Elizabeth and Prince George because he died ill as the show was being created, with his corpse-like appearance and visible suffering in this now being his legacy after death...

This show could've worked so well if they actually wanted a satirical take on the Royal Family rather than just "haha it's funneh cuz Queen Elizabeth would never curse irl lel" Like, these people are known to be all posh and stuffy and that can make for some very great humor, or maybe criticizing the concept of monarchy itself in clever ways, or bringing up the dark side of the family like the Windsor Nazi connections or Prince Andrew since it's supposed to be a politically incorrect show for adults

There's a lot of things they can get away with making jokes or episodes of like the time the queen (an avid driver and certified mechanic) personally picked up the king of Saudi-Arabia (where women aren't even allowed to drive) who was shocked to find that the queen herself was driving him to Balmoral. She then offered to "show him around the estate" at breakneck speed in her beloved Land Rover, with the king begging her to slow down through his interpreter. Or Charles' wine powered car

The royal family to me was always those people on the magazines at the grocery store for middle age people to buy who have nothing going on in their lives

Spitting Image will handle the loss of the Queen in an infinitely more entertaining way than this animated mistake. Also, it was interesting to learn Saber's family is from Swansea, which I've once heard described as "The Oakland of Wales."

Making a series where your cast are living people you don't personally know sounds like a nightmare.

As a fan of Gary Janetti, i dont know what possessed him to make this. Most stuff he makes is fun, genuinely good, or at least entertaining. He made some of the BEST Family Guy episodes and Vicious, and some imo solid Will and Grace eps

It’s one thing to have the concept of a child be made fun of for doing certain things it’s another thing entirely to pick an actual real life child and subject him to humiliation for things he doesn’t even understand.

Just a correction. Its Princess Diana. There is an A at the end. Also she wasn't actually from Wales, she was born and raised in England. She was Princess of Wales because that was the title the Queen gave her.

if I had a nickel for every time a channel I follow posted a video related to the British royal family today, I'd have two nickels, which isn't a lot, but it's weird it happened twice.

That fact that this show is still on HBO Max even after the purge of several other shows is insulting. Also going off on a tangent, David Zaslav actually prefers cable and theaters to streaming and personally… if I was him, rather than piss off a bunch of people to the point that the company you run loses $20 billion in capital, I would’ve run the many shows being taken off into the ground… not by making them go on forever, but by having the shows that would be taken down instead get reruns on cable if possible along with having any future HBO Max projects air on HBO itself. I mean HBO had a deal with Fox to air their movies that’s ending after 2022, using stuff from HBO Max would fill in a good void.

When I first heard about this show last year, right away the main red flag for me was the crew's decision to mock a real child and his two younger siblings since they're targeting the members of the Royal Family for satire, including making up cliche personalities for the three very young children whose lives, as far as we know at this point, we don't even know much about. And that's the thing- making fun of the adult members of the British Royal Family? Fair game for satire, primarily because they're *adults*. But the moment when the child members of the Royal Family are dragged into being made fun of, especially very young children, that's where satire ends and purely mean-spirited bullying starts.
