My mom called me just before she went into the hospital. She asked me to come and live with her. I was so excited and said I was moving from one house to another. After I was moved my sister called and said to hurry and come home, 1000 miles away. I jumped on a plane and made it to the hospital where she was hanging on. She died in my arms 😢 This song reminded me of her. I cry every time I hear it. Because I really don't remember saying goodbye

There are songs only one person can sing and take it where no one else can. This is one of those songs.

+bwl123 Sorry to tell you, but you have a major mistake in the lyrics, though I know some of the lyric sites have it wrong, because they are fan postings.... It is "Was I just off somewhere, just too high" not "to hide". Big difference in the meaning of the song. Steve Earle wrote the song in rehab, and it is about the regrets of an addict. His official lyrics are in his liner notes.

I truly love this song and it makes one think about just how precious life really, really is . Enjoy every day.
