The Power of Structural Masonry: Why It Stands the Test of Time

Why have buildings like the Pyramids and the Pantheon and entire cities all over the world persisted for centuries, and even millennia, but today we can barely build something that last for 75 years before ending up in a landfill?
This conversation I had with Trevor Acorn, a structural engineer on the Podcast, was awesome. Be sure to check out the full episode on our Podcast Playlist on KZread!

True! seismic is masonry’s primary vulnerability. But we like to think about it like this: water, fire, rot, termites, mold and high wind are vulnerabilities for wood frame. Pros and cons to everything. We aren’t advocating for masonry high rises in high seismic zones. Don’t forget: half the world has been standing far longer than our buildings do. And they’re all out of unreinforced structural masonry. And yes: in seismic too. Google Taq Kasra outside of Baghdad.
