    This video is such an epiphany for me! Thank you so much, I could never understand noise as a tool for driving effects, but right when I was looking at the grass on the dirt example it all just clicked! It’s the randomness that can drive an effect or texture. I get it now. I think..

    Agreed with this video 100 percent. I used to hate noise but as I started to use it in static cg artworks I realized I no longer had to go mad with high sample counts with rendering as the imperfection still looked impressive in many use cases.

    It's also important to note that the little bit of noise that would be realistic, introduced to a 3D render during compositing, will also reduce the compression on youtube and other sites, therefore the video will be better quality. Another added bonus!

    Can you elaborate?

  • @aarongolden

    @aarongolden

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@HawksNestYT admittedly I know very little about 3d but in the photography many video world, grain tricks the compression algorithym, into thinking areas of pixels are far different, than they are as the compression process on most platforms, effectivly looks to group similar clusters and compression them, so detail in shadows for instance is often lost. Just a theory but I imagine a similar logic would apply here

  • @EcripArts

    @EcripArts

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@HawksNestYT What Aaron said is basically correct. Say, you have a shadowy area. The colours will all be fairly dark, let's say close to black for this example. KZread will want the video size to be as small as possible, and it can do that by reducing the amount of colours in areas where colours are very similar to each other. So all of those coloured pixels in the shadows (which are very slightly different) will be made into one colour to save data. Then you get blocky video, as you may sometimes see with videos that have a lower colour depth as well. Grain consists of all kinds of different colours. Now, overlay that over the shadow, and KZread can't make out that all of those colours are quite close, because the grain constantly changes the image, and every pixel is a more varied colour than it would be without the grain. And since KZread can't see that it's all kind of the same, it can't reduce the colours. Therefore, better video quality!~ Also it would always be there to some degree in real photography / video, so it adds to the realism too.

    If you have gradient banding, use around 1.5-2.0 noise and that will clear that up. Just be careful because noise can cause havoc on compression and once compressed make everything 10X worse.
