I actually loved the postman. I don’t notice the run time. And I enjoy the ride of the story. I don’t see that kevin Cosner acted bad. He was acting like he was lying. I have watched this movie at least 15 times. One of my favorites.

It’s a funny thing how different people perceive movies. I actually really enjoyed this one, if a story is good, a movie length doesn’t bother me because I’m invested in the characters. An 8% score on rotten tomatoes shows how out of touch it and movie reviewers are on what people enjoy in a movie. I’m not a movie reviewer because my opinion of a film being good or bad is my own opinion, and not everyone enjoys the same things. People raved about No County for old men when it was released, I watched it and thought it was dreadful! Each to there own!

Amen! I couldn't make it to the end of Wolf of Wallstreet (cited in this video as a long movie done right)

The Postman is almost 3 hours 😮 I never noticed, the movie is so good it seemed so much shorter.

A really cool movie especially the Tom Petty Cameo (as himself) now that he's gone, this movie gets a lot of criticism, but so does other movies of his like dances with wolves and waterworld, but cheesy is the worst comment I could give any movie he's done that I've seen he's not to say he hasn't done a bad one but I haven't watched it yet if there is. The postman is a nice change of pace from the typical movie, but the movie is about hope and perseverance and it inspires me to this day to watch it.

I loved this movie! In fact I watched it last night. Yes it has it's slow moments but once you start watching it you stay with it until the end. Critics have their jobs and opinions but in the end it's all about your personal enjoyment. If you like it then screw the critics.

I like this movie a lot and I actually enjoy that it is long and yet not full of action all the time. And also that it takes the time to do the worldbuilding, the romance plot is kinda unnecessary IMO, but I can get along with it. Even that blond guy you mentioned isnt a problem for me, because I just here figured that it is supposed to be a real celebrity playing himself + I didn't even know who he was, probably thanks to me not being an American. Also I heard that he dirrected a third movie something called dancing with the wolves, I have seen water world and the postman and I loved them. Is it something similar or not and should I check it out ?

“Dances with Wolves” was about a Civil War officer who no longer remembers why he thought cause was worthwhile, tired of war, tired of blood. He rides into an open volley of fire as a form of suicide since they were going to remove his foot. Routes battle over to victory since suicide is mistaken for courage. Impressed general gets a real doctor to save his foot. He is sent out West, posted to an empty fortress. Makes friends with the Lakota and movie become a cute but realistic portrayal of American Indian life. Has a major innocent quality. Eventually army catch up with outpost & it is thought he was a deserter (whole fortress was deserted by others). Only audience sees the guy who gave him the writtenorders commits suicide right after he leaves. One doesn’t know why. The real star of the show is the panorama scenes but hey I saw the longer version. It made even my mother like the serene quality of open plains. Musical score helps. After his capture, he’s beaten up. Indian friends rescue him. One of them finds his diary with intact orders. He goes back to straighten out desertion charge, also saves tribe from possible Army attacks to recapture him since justice is so extreme. If you have ever seen Ansel Adams B&W photos of US🇺🇸 West, the poignancy and beauty it is a great film. Most people like the Lakota as they are so sweet. Also like the romance, it’s gentle too. If you understand scenic or want an in depth view of Indian life it’s great. Artistic & anthropological. Incredible music.

I actually love this movie... it's better than Waterworld. That's a movie that truly drags on forever, I never finished watching it.

Pardon me, but the Wanderer delivered mail to get supplies. What started as a scam, became an entity with a life of its own; thanks to Postmaster Ford Lincoln Mercury. I love this movie! Being a Las Vegan, (and a T.P. fan) the inclusion of Hoover Dam and its Mayor, was icing on the cake, to me. Tom says, "I used to be someone famous," giving me the idea 'the war' wasn't long in their past. I'm going to have to get a copy, as I can't find a site to watch it for free.✌😸

FYI, that was not Hoover Dam, but rather Boundary Dam in Metaline Falls, Washington, where most of the movie was filmed. I also really enjoyed the movie and seeing Tom Petty as the mayor. Godspeed Tom!

This is actually one of my all time favorite movies. Loved James Newton Howard's score. I happened to see our local news movie critic (small town Mississippi) randomly and asked if he liked it. He hated it...said "The patriotism was...laughable." I didn't think about that while watching it the first time, but I totally get what he was saying...but, what can I say...I loved the movie. Thanks for the review.

I actually enjoyed this one. Like me and no one else apparently. Will Patton deserved a nomination for this as he is truly disturbing in his portrayal. Larenz Tate was great too. I bought the concept and enjoyed it.

Hometown0 that part where he is painting in his “treehouse” command center or whatever it is and the people walking around in there are causing him to mess up his painting and he gets this psychotic look in his eyes and says, “Stop Moving!” to no one in particular, was chilling.

The Postman is my favorite Movie in the History of the World. If you watch closely, you find the whole thing very familiar with our life now. Wake Up America! Wake Up World!

I am sorry to disagree, but it's one of my favorite movies.

I actually love this movie. And who pays attention to critics reviews. It’s always the audience review that is more significant and over half the people that watched it liked it. I think the other half just don’t get it. Or they have a short attention span. It’s definitely a movie that was before it’s time. One of my favorites actually. He’s also not really forced to continue with his postman persona. He does it for free meals. If you don’t even even get that concept, you definitely aren’t gonna get the movie. Kevin Costner‘s character is the most reluctant hero. I’ve ever seen in a film. He wanted nothing to do with any of this. The real hero was Ford Lincoln Mercury . He kept the Postal Service gone and he did it because it gave people hope.

I like The Postman and Waterworld. Very inspiring. I think many people miss the point.

This movie was soooo freaking good. It really packs a punch with life lessons and can be relatable to todays world in 2022.

Imo, the tom petty Cameo is what inspired how they revealed who Beta was in the walking dead. When they finally saw his face, he use to be a famous musician before the world went to hell.And the fact that the actor who played Beta is in the postman , just makes more sense why that could be true.

Honestly, The Postman is my favorite movie of all time with The Lighthouse being a close second. I only cought wind of this film when I watched a video about the M1 Carbine in hollywood and videogames when I saw a snippit of this masterpiece for the first time. I literally only watched this movie because I think the M1 Carbine is cool but it turned out to be so much more. I am not American but I felt genuine US patriotism course through my veins when I watched it. I have played many Fallout campaigns dedicated to The Postman and I think it fits those games perfectly. All I can say is that you should at least at least give this movie a try. The first time I watched it, I felt that it was tailor made to my interests and I was really amazed at how well it kept me engaged. Tl;dr I really love this movie and you should give it a chance if you like Fallout: New Vegas.

You know if they were to remake this movie in 2021, I think it would fair better than it initially did in '97. Maybe stick a little to the book, call back to this version and utilize what you can for the remake version. As for the remake version characters, maybe Ethan Hawke as the Postman, wearing a faded University of Minnesota shirt, Daisy Ridley as Abby, and Josh Brolin as General Bethlehem. I think it would be cool, maybe.

I read David Brin's novel before seeing the movie. "Gordon Krantz" was a much more interesting character than Whatsizname/Shakespeare, visiting other villages, and even one "guided by a super computer." The final battle of the Augments was bypassed for a "Rule of Eight" contest. However, David Brin thought that battle wrapped up the story much better. The "Winter-in-hiding" segment went on for far too long, and the Tom Petty thing was a WTF? moment. But "Ford Lincoln Mercury" got it right at the end: "Live and Let Live," and the Restored United States of America came back, one delivered letter at a time. My impression is the opposite, but hey, I'm not a science fiction fan so that was bound to happen. I appreciate honest opinions.

My favorite movie.

I read the book. When I was much younger. Then I saw the film. The film took some serious changes from the book. But I was ok with that. It's not a perfect film but damn it has heart and a great fight scene at the finale. I love it. Hopefully one day a proper version will be made closer to David Brin's novel.

Screw Rotten Tomatoes. How can 100 critics decide what the rest of the world will like? They've been wrong many, many times. I'd rather watch 3 hrs of The Postman than 6 episodes of Moon Knight or 13 episodes of whatever the new streaming potboiler is. So it "ain't a masterpiece"...So what. Not many movies are.

I haven't watched this film since I was a teenager in the 2010s. I was talking about this with someone and I was talking about the cool scenes and then I was like, "Hold up let me check some reviews before I say you should watch it." and then I saw Rotten Tomatoes at 8% Critical and 50% Audience and was like... "Okay so maybe don't watch it..." When a film is tied at 8% with Catwoman and the 1984 Supergirl film, it might not be good...

The problem with a movie reviewer is that they think THEIR opinion is what everyone else's opinion is SUPPOSED to be. That's why they are "OPINIONS". Each person should evaluate EVERYTHING based on their OWN likes, dislikes, political viewpoint , etc. So many people on this thread commented that they LIKED the movie. Ford Lincoln Mercury said it best at the end of the film: "Live and let live". That is akin to think your own thoughts and let others think theirs. We all could take a lesson from this which is to watch the movie and decide for YOURSELF if it's a good movie or not. Stop allowing yourselves to be led by one person's SUBJECTIVE opinion.

Everyone remembers their old job but they all still chose to live in tents & ride horses? Plot holes big enough to drive a mail truck through... if you could get the mechanic off the horse of course.

You.... Take for granted just how much of our machines and institutions rely on a functional society Vehicles are extremely labor intensive and resource heavy to produce, not to mention the process of extracting and refining the oil used to fuel them. Not mention the need to constantly produce that oil so that you're not left with an expired supply (gas goes bad after only a few months, nevermind *13 years* ) Then there's the simple fact that you need secure roads to transport these vehicles and fuel, roads that also require resource intensive processes to produce and maintain. Off-road vehicles can get around this fine, but most vehicles are made specifically to drive on paved roads. They won't last very long in offroad conditions whether they get stuck in the mud or snow, or whether uneven terrain causes them to veer into a ditch make cause for repairs. These roads are either maintained by the state or by those protected by the state. Without either, they will just rot away. There's a reason humans have used horses for thousands of years. They're extremely versatile as they can be used for travel, work, or meat. They're also dependable and hardy animals that can traverse almost any terrain. Most of important of all, though, is that they are cheap and easy to maintain compared to vehicles. Horses, outside of medical care, only require food, water, & space to remain healthy and useful, and they don't require and intense web of interconnecting industries to produce more horses. If we suffered a complete, societal collapse for 13 years straight, you'd bet your ass everyone would ride horses. By that time, cars would be nothing but rusted, heavy, useless piles of junk

Just watched it again I agree they should have focused more on the war and back story why all of this happened they tried way too much in this film but still like the movie not love but like it's a good watch

The Postman was the greatest movie ever made.

Ok, it's kinda mawkish and Kevin Costner's acting is often insufferable. I find most people who hate it have a certain political agenda. But it has soul and humor. "Who's the President. What's his name?" "Starkey. Richard Starkey."

yeah, your review....your opinion....The book is superb but you did not review it. You reviewed the movie. it is a post apocalypse setting but has nothing really to do with that. It has to do with the human condition......our hopes and dreams and desires. I have heard author of the books review of the movie and it is a fair representation of his book or so he says. The movie is a fantasy, enjoyable and the cringe worthy moments like Ford Lincoln Mercury or their candid discussion of the pre war jobs, or Tom Petty being Tom Petty.......are all enjoyable as a guilty pleasure. It invokes a patriotism not to the US but to a feeling of the pre war years and the seemingly innocent times before the war and the dissolution of the govt. It takes something we all consider mundane like the postman and elevates him to almost mythical proportions to the young and invokes memories in those who were around pre war.....in doing so it reminds us all how fragile we are as a society but reinforces our desires to be free.......and to cherish it. My opinions of course.....Gordon (aka the Postman) is a super hero who did not want to be a hero...all he wanted was just the return of human compassion....

I don't fully grasp the message of this movie. Is government the problem or the solution? Is government the oppressor or the liberator? It has to be one or the other. It can't be both. And you can't say that "one form of government is the problem while another is the solution" because reality doesn't work that way. Reality is "The People versus the state." Ergo, government has to be entirely the problem or entirely the solution. Bethlehem thinks of himself as a feudalist. That's a form of government. Primitive and barbaric, but it's a government. Also, he utters the phrase "The Unites States does not exist!" as if to imply that this country is defined by the government and not The People - or by the presence or absence of a strong federal oligarchy. And we're meant to assume that, in the absence of a strong federal oligarchy, an autocratic warlord like Bethlehem would rise to fill that power vacuum. So The People lose either way. Either we're oppressed by a federal oligarchy or we're oppressed by an autocratic warlord. Both of those paradigms conflict with constitutional republicanism.

I only read the book. Maybe I will not see the movie. 😃 Thank you for the movie review!

Excellent movie, lousy review but it looks like some people don’t get it. Essentially a lie, awakens people, makes them think the country has restarted, and they are finally able to overthrow a tinpot dictator with delusions of grandeur. Once removed, they are able to rebuild a shattered world. Telling them he was a postman from the Restored United States, inspires a kid to create a real postal service. The idea is outstanding. Communication is a great way to link isolated communities into a network. After the tyrant is overthrown, the whole society starts to rebuild. At the end, we meet his daughter who has been narrating. It’s a dedication to a statue. Her name is very aptly “Hope”. Definitely cool, a lie to survive becomes a belief in tomorrow. It becomes people making change... hope, not a bad thing after everything is gone.

Brilliant film 10 out 10

this is why I wish my dad was in the war

Good review. Kostner acts like a pressed ham when it comes to expressing a characters changes in emotional states. Very monotone. When he said at the end, "I should have killed you when I had the chance, but you were so powerful blah blah blah".. Nowhere in the movie does his acting express this characters development to this point.

It's was terrible

This is the first comment I’ve made on a review of a movie. In fact I’ve never even looked at a review of a movie that I’ve watched. Tonight though, I had to ask myself the question, “does anybody else feel the same way about this movie as I do? “ So I had a look at this guy‘s review and Bingo!… He was saying exactly everything that I was feeling by the end of the movie. I think the one saving grace was the musical score. Although I do feel there were too many victoriously uplifting moments. The music seemed to change from ‘Happy’ to ‘Dramatic’ quite a lot. In saying all that, ‘Dances with Wolves’ was my favourite movie of all time.

Definitely an American audiences movie. Very cringe worthy to non Americans.
