Hollywood Vanity Projects & THE POSTMAN (1997)

Фильм және анимация

I'm not here to tell you "The Postman" is some underrated gem or a misunderstood classic. It's really not good (imagine watching a playthrough of "Death Stranding" at half speed)...yet I'm really glad it exists.

If you take one thing away from all of this, it should be that "Waterworld" isn't as bad as you remember (or it's way worse than you think...I'm still not sure), and that vanity projects tell us more about the rich and famous than any autobiography ever could. I recently rewatched Waterworld, which I loved as a kid but was prepared to discover as an adult was actually terrible, and I was surprised to discover that, while it’s definitely not a “good” movie, it’s also definitely not soulless trash! It’s pretty darn inventive and full of attention to detail in its physical world, and there are glimmers of real attempts to make something interesting... but it never quite gets there. A fascinating one to revisit! And you’re so right: it’s never boring!

I wouldn't classify The Postman as a vanity project. It's a perfectly good idea for a movie for Costner to direct and star in. It'd be a vanity project if he did a movie he had no business starring in, like Bradley Cooper making Maestro.

There are moments of relevance for films like these. I’ve always enjoyed this one and while I realize it’s not for everybody, it has the foundation for what works well for humanity. It’s about hope for a better world, which ties into the theme of a lot of Costner’s films.

Somehow, Costner chose to take this goodwill that he received from his career revival 2 and a half decades later (due to the popularity of Yellowstone) and is going to redo his vanity project phase with a *2-part, 5-hour combined* Western epic for WB called Horizon: An American Saga slated for next year. I'm actually morbidly curious about this one.

It was about an idea. The power of communication. He was chosen as a stand-in stud because he had unique quality of being from out of town. Did it have some camp. Sure, you bet. But the idea of a society being resurrected by something as simple as a letter was interesting. I am a pathetic cynic that was moved by the selflessness displayed by kids carrying the mail.

As a fan of David Brin's book, I saw this film in a cinema with some other fans (we got together through the Brin-L maillist). Afterwards we all thought that the movie could have been salvaged by: 1. cutting about 40 minutes of it 2. removing the Tom Petty stuff in toto 3. starting again. To say we were disappointed is understating the case entirely. While The Postman was not one of Brin's best novels (Startide Rising, Glory Season, The Uplift War, Earth are much better novels) it was poorly served by this movie. Still, because he possibly still gets royalty payments from its sale, I have a copy of the blu-ray. Small recompense, I know, but still something tangible.

The Postman (film) was great. Compared to the Planet of the Apes or Mad Max, it was great to see a movie that was relentlessly optimistic and hopeful for such a dystopic/post-calamity setting. Very rarely do you see post-apocalyptic movies that resist the urge to go on a 2.5 hour rant about how humanity is doomed and how misanthropy and cynicism are entirely justified. Im planning on reading the novel soon. The Holnists needed a lot more development though, at least in the film. They were more 2 dimensionally antagonistic than, say, Caesar's Legion in New Vegas. I did like how they kept the focus on society after whatever nuclear attack/bioweapon ravaged the world some years earlier. Seeing society gradually reconstruct (pre epilogue) was one of the best parts of the movie

I must of watched the postman 100s of times in the 90s when I was a kid so I might be biased here. the postman in my opinion was a great movie I always loved the adventure aspect of it and rebuilding of the USA set into motion accidentally by the postman. the main thing you get wrong about the main character is he was supposed to be unlikeable and a bit of a snake till near the end. Also Will Patton who plays the bad guy was one of the best villains of any movie I have ever seen.

That's sort of how I feel about it. My mom loved this book & movie, so watched it & talked about it a lot when I was a teenager. It still feels like comfort food when I watch it, despite all its flaws. The idea is not _as bad_ as everyone says: communication & the ability to connect is the center of not only civilization, but what it means to be human. It's about the ability to connect & to remember. The concept, which is better laid out in the novel, is a bit cheesy, but it's still good.

@@TheVolginator I don't know if it is. I'm not sure why he did it, what he got out of it... I *think* he was trying to indulge a certain type of fan, in a very "you want to smoke cigarettes? Okay, smoke the whole carton then" kind of way. (I think 3: Snake-eater is a perfect game, in the discussion for Greatest Game of All-Time along with Ocarina of Time, Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows of Amn/Throne of Bhaal... that's really it, IMO. My 2nd tier is stuff like the Mass Effect trilogy, Dragon Age: Origins... not sure if we can still put old classics up there, but I wouldn't object to some like Final Fantasy III, Super Mario 64, what have you. I'm not a fighting game fan or FPS fan, for the most part, so I'm sure I'm being unfair to some of the classics in that genre, like Halo, or... the game Counter-Strike was modded from. Although I think Halo is a worse version of Turok, which might be my favorite all-time FPS. Underrated as fuck. 5: Ground Zeroes and Phantom Pain was even more fun to play, I think, than 3 on account of some of the best - maybe the best - gameplay I've ever experienced. And I think the story was pretty good, for what was there... just, you know, incomplete. I mean... "good" by the standards by which I judge MGS games: weird, silly, over-the-top nonsense that is fun because it's silly and it knows it's silly... I do think that how convoluted MGS is perceived to be is overblown though. Just because 1 - 4: Guns of the Patriots shouldn't be considered; 97% of how convoluted and terrible MGS is perceived to be is the fault of GotP, I think... and 2 - because each game was supposed to be stand-alone, he had to retcon a few things for the next game. I'm okay with it. And 1 and 2 largely hold up, although 2 is as great in concept as in execution, which... I can appreciate that it's a genius idea executed masterfully... but Kojima's focus was on that, I think, rather than fully on making a game that was fun to play, so... it's worth playing, but replaying it isn't anywhere near as fun as replaying 3 or 5, for instance. I just refuse to acknowledge 4... which works, because cutting it out of canon doesn't affect any other games, it's tacked on at the end.)

I can't express in words how much I enjoyed this, it's hilarious and also very well thought out. Can you do a comparison for Robin Hood and the Untouchables next, not exactly sure it works but you never know. You know how every year or at least in the past for a long time there would be two of a specific type of movie, or theme or genre or whatever you want to call it. Something to compete with the really good idea but also generate more hype for said thing as a result. It seems to me like he figured that out and decided to try and be in both of said movies. He just didn't realize it doesn't work because of the fact you can only be in one place at a time and after the thing or movie in question actually comes out the idea or popularity of the concept simply goes away. He must have felt otherwise...

The Network should just cut it at midnight, the best scenes are in the begining, when Kevin Costner and the villain have a literal competition to see who chews more scenery, and a couple of minutes later when the villain explains his backstory, pretty much predicting the appeal of living in a post-apocalyptic wasteland years before those anoying memes about zombies that where so popular in 2011 ("do you think I had any kind 9f authority before the end? I’m kinda confused. I mean, you’re correct on the whole ego thing, buts the entire point of the character. He’s one of the films villains of the film for a majority of the runtime. He’s just another selfish asshole manipulating desperate people for his own self service. He slowly grows more guilty, until he gives up his charade altogether. But his actions have unintentionally convinced people to fight for themselves. The heroes of the film are the people, not the Postman. His selfish lies and deception saved the world, and the film goes out of its way, often, to show you how undeserved the praise is. Even by the end, he isn’t the hero. He just commits to doing a simple job of helping people connect. And while they credit his actions for saving them, the point of the movie is that people have it within themselves to save each other, and Kurt each other up. And that selfish action and the pursuit of power lead to destruction and oppression. This is one of my favorite post-apocalyptic films. It’s a shame so many people miss the obvious and just choose to be bored with it.

Having seen this back in the day I can tell you the one thing I remember was Will Patton. The way he delivers the "You spelled Tyranny wrong." line is actually pretty phenomenal, he was a piece of shit. But he thought his way was best. The Postman had nothing to express his ideology, he let other characters do that for him cause it wouldn't be badass enough if he took it on himself to fix America.

I read David Brin's "The Postman" before the movie appeared. "Gordon Krantz" was a far more interesting character than "Shakespeare," and visited more communities, even one "guided by a super computer." The Romantic-Winter-in-hiding went on and on for far too long, and the Tom Petty sequence was a WTF? moment. The soundtrack was good, though: kzread.info/dash/bejne/pW2mlalvo6WWnZs.html The Battle of the Augments was ditched in favor of a "Rule of Eight" showdown. (David Brin said that was a better solution.) "Ford Lincoln Mercury's" message: "Live and Let Live" knitted the "Restored United States of America" back together, one delivered letter at a time. (An imperfect movie that I watch to remember what should have been.)

I recently discovered your channel and I'm loving your stuff. If I'm understanding your assessment of the bad guys' ideology, I think you're saying that it is unrealistic that this type of group was able to survive or would be a product of the 90s. I can't say agree with that. The 80s and 90s were the start of the militia movement here in the US. A significant portion of these groups have ties to white supremacist organizations. These groups have seen exponential growth in the past few years but they have always been there under the surface. People who track these groups could probably draw a line from the Oklahoma City bombing to the recent events in our capitol. I live around northern Idaho which has been one of the regional hotbeds for this kind of activity. One of the most frightening experiences of my life was getting gassed and shot at with rubber bullets while protesting this summer, and seeing members of these groups infiltrating the crowd and antagonizing the police. They want a civil war and an opportunity to dominate people they view as weak. The scenario presented in The Postman is exactly what they want to happen and are actively working toward as we speak.

I was fortunate to make it to the end of the block and could take cover, just got a good dose of gas. As I was recovering from that I saw a group of guys carrying an injured guy toward me. I started filming and taking pictures, they set him down and started treating him with a medics pack they had with them. That's when I started noticing the symbols on some of their clothes. Then they started noticing me. That was pretty scary too. I decided it was time to leave at point.

This was originally an excellent (but forgettable) book by the sci-fi lord David Brin. Only the barest of premises is the same compared to the movie. The movie strays very far from the book, on into movie trope mode. The movie is heavily predictable, where the book goes for a more realistic take that borders on McCarthy's The Road, without going as far as Road went regarding bleakness. This movie predates Waterworld, so really Waterworld is worse, and can be called Postman with water in it, considering both are Costner vanity projects. Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice.....

The film was okay, especially compared to the other post-apocalyptic films. Why do the Mad Max films, especially Fury Road or the Predator series get so rave revues? They actually suck and offer only gratuitious violence. Postman is not top cinema, but it is entertaining. Read the novel on which it is based by David Brin for more background. It's an entertaining film, so quit being the arch critic. Make yourself comfortable, get some munchies and some drinks and relax for a while.

Disagree w your trashing of the Postman. This movie was quite unique & carried one of the central themes of the free world. If one goes around acting like a 3rd world dictator here then sooner or later someone(s) will hand said individual their ass. We 're actually built for that here(see revolutionary war). I loved this movie & watch it every time it crosses my path. That for your review. "Stuff's gettin' better."😊
