Steven car is very nice little track machine. I helped him go through all the braking on the car and got him upgraded to the 350mm setup and the my gt3 master psm fix. Some simple upgrades really show how good the 996 can be. Only big thing I'd change yet is go to a 265/35/18 front tire and do the radiator bracket mod. Little more front aero with Joe Toth parts would also help

Might be worth mentioning these cars do need the LN-Engineering Oiling upgrades at a minimum (bigger pan, deeper pickup, and C5/C6 Corvette Filter Adapter). A Oil to Air Separator upgrade or even just a planned replacement is probably a good idea. While everyone mentions the IMS and RMS, they don't mention the "fix" is a more serviceable bearing. At least beyond that consumables are reasonable due to part sharing but it's still a Porsche.

I would say keeping it stock is the best thing to do. The factory models are great. I would be more interested in having the engine rebuilt and for the chassis and frame to be restored if need be. They can now powered coat the chassis to make it last longer. I would consider a $15,000 restoration of a car as far more important it means you can keep the car for the next 25 years.

A little understeer in an 996 is a good thing, lets you get rotation using the brakes on entry and is fast even if you have to maybe drive through a little understeer on exits sometimes. 996's were rejected by the yuppy crowd due to the headlights, and departure from aircooled. The IMS bearing didn't help either. Fact is though, you can do a 997 front end on these cars, and sell back most of the 996 front end parts for collision repair, to make back a lot of the money. In the end, you have a Porsche 911. I owned a 993 and frankly, I wasn't on the bandwagon for many reasons. Weird gearing, gear throws with no feel and the length of a bread truck, pedal positioning that's by no means "driver oriented" as it was harder to heel-toe than a Tacoma. In the end though, for the mod crowd, all those things can be fixed. In the bare bones, there is a great car there. Cheaper the better if you ask me, because Porsche prices are bloated.

I have a 996.1 C2 with the 3.4 and I’ll go ahead and say this publicly; it’s a better engine to drive in terms of fun than the 986.2 3.6 or the 997.1 3.6. It runs towards the redline like a motorcycle engine and the power band can be strengthened thoroughly with simple bolt ons. I’m at 300 whp before i upgraded to a 997.1 air intake and the car is really fun to drive. As for the push, he’s actually got too much rear tire. I upgraded from 265/18 to 285/18 on Continental Extreme Contact Sports and mine stays planted even when i wasn’t to do stupid stuff. The key to 996 setup is lowered, moderately stiffened springs, stiff anti sway bars, and moderately stiff dampers. The overly hard spring setup will cause the front to wash and the rear to snap. I’m at 225 front 285 rear, with 7mm spacers up front and 12mm spaces in the rear and it’s very neutral. Turns into a gentle, self correcting four wheel drift when at the limit. They were betrayed by their original OEM setups; they have a great chassis and engines with a lot potential. 👍😊

Widening the rear tires to reduce the risk of snap oversteer? That's a new one. Increasing the width increases the risk of snap oversteer! A narrower tire with a progressive design/compound is the solution to achieve progressive loss of traction. A wider tire will give you more overall lateral grip, but usually a less progressive breakaway point. Also, worrying about snap oversteer in a relatively low powered 911, particularly a C4, is a bit odd. They are very neutral with a tendency towards understeer. It's actually quite hard to provoke oversteer unless you're giving the car very silly exaggerated inputs.

@@ClayWong supercharger or turbos for the 996 are more than 5k new. Also really pushing the edge of reliability doing so. Can buy a decent 996tt for 30-35k if you shop around. They are 300k+ motors at 600whp and can be tracked harder than a standard 996 without issue. The dry sump mezger motor make for a great track car. A 996TT is minimum $125K AUD and it spans all the way to $160K AUD. Unfortunately it’s a different ball game to people around the world when it comes to prices for 911s.

Well the porsche calipers there are endless pad choices. Steven brake kit was one of mine. I actually have a cheaper stock caliper kits for the 996 coming out instead of going to the 996tt/997s calipers like he did. Way cheaper to stay with the porsche calipers than going to stop tech as well. The Porsche brembo calipers are actually really good. Outside of going to 2 piece rotors, his car cas way more braking than ever needed. The similar 350mm setup I have guys running 800whp on turbos running hard on track and they work just fine. Add 997 gt3 front ducts and 997tt rear ducts to help with air flow and thanks more than what 99% of guys can ever use
