185mph and some OVERSTEER | European Roadtrip in Jethro’s-own 1998 Porsche ‘996.3’ 911 Carrera

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The Porsche 911 996 variants, manufactured between 1997 and 2004, often fly under the radar despite their significance. Designed by Pinky Lai as Porsche's first water-cooled 911, it aimed to propel the brand into the modern era. Though sharing some frontal design elements with the Porsche Boxster drew criticism from air-cooled purists, it remained one of the most beloved 911s in history.
Host Jethro Bovingdon of Sports and Exotic Car, presented by Gullwing Motor Cars, stands by the 996 Carrera, owning one for over a decade. Notably, Jethro has transformed his own 996 into an exceptionally track-focused vehicle, a passion shared by many motoring journalists who often modify their cars.
In this episode, Jethro unveils his personal Porsche 996, showcasing its evolution into a highly track-oriented build. Follow along as he guides us through a thrilling journey-from a track day at Circuit De Spa Francorchamps in Belgium to a high-speed blast on Germany's renowned autobahn.

So little genuinely good car content out there. It's either ego-soaked grandstanding, credulous fluff about supercars and restomods, flowery over written guff or just influencer trash. Thanks, Jethro, this video is a tonic.

I owned a 2003 996 GT2; yes, the Widowmaker. My favorite car I have ever owned. No electronic nannies, just ABS, and that was it for driver aids. Shockingly fast in the upper gears (1st was just to get moving, 2nd was too short for the boost to really build, but 3rd on up was ballistic.) especially when I had it tuned and put on a sport exhaust with high flow cats. The handling was problematic, as it was delivered from the factory. They dialed in a ton of front end under-steer, supposedly to stop people crashing it, but all that did was mean that it under-steered, so people wound on more lock, then more lock, and finally when the front tires gripped, it made the rear end LOSE grip instantly, and you went backwards through the nearest hedge! The fix for the handling issues, was to get the front end working correctly; so dial in some negative camber (about -2 degrees if you could get it) and a tiny amount of toe-out, to make the steering sharper/quicker steering, and get the caster set correctly. Set the ride height to Euro specs, set the rear end to be slightly toed IN (because at track days, the rear end would spread under braking, and set camber at the rear to -1.5. I ended up installing triple adjustable Motons, with remote reservoirs, and went full race specs on the suspension, and ended up running -3 degrees in the front, and -2 in the rear, and changed to 800 lb springs. It made the car unbelievably good on the track; instant turn-in, massive front end grip, limpet-like rear traction, just stunning. Had to sell it to buy our first house, when I got married.

Porsche has this 'habit' of producing vehicles that the market is not immediately ready for and are viewed with disdain by many - and then people realise how wrong they were. Thing of the 944, the 928, and the 996 where people thought they were weird, ugly, etc and avoided. Then the prices bottom out and people snap them up when they realise they are actually unique and amazing vehicles. At the end of November I had the chance to take my 996.1 on the Phillip Island Grand Prix track for three days - utterly amazing experience and while not Spa is a brilliant way to get to know a car. I dod not manage to get up to 185 mph - but 137 mph on the original 3.4L non-turbo was fun (albeit coming on to the main strait at +100 mph in a slow controlled 4 wheel drift towards the barriers was interesting) and in the absence of any Autobahn access will need to wait until another time. The 996 is an under-appreciated vehicle. Something that is so useful as an every day driver, but being able to open up and run down the track on the weekend and at a price point where you don't need to be a millionaire to buy and drive. They are a joy to drive, and will always leave you with a smile on your face.

It’ll be as close to bulletproof as an M96 can be and it’ll be a $35k rebuild by the time it’s over. Love Jethro and his passion for cars, driving, and Porsche are right in line with mine. With that said, as much as I think this build is such a labor of love and interesting, if it were my money, I would have sent my 996 engine for a 4.0-4.2 liter bullet proof engine rebuild that makes 400-450 horsepower and a ton more torque. This would also not require an entirely new ecu and programming setup. The 991 and DFI engines have long term issues too with high pressure fuel pump failures, DFI carbon build up on the valves, high pressure fuel wash on cylinders, and bore scoring/seizing in very cold climates as well. Glad to see it running and performing really great now, but I would have gone a different engine route. Love the passion and your journey though Jethro. Always excited to watch your videos. keep up the great work!

@@alessandromeyer4888 By addressing all the well known weak links in the 996/997 engines, they can be made virtually bullet proof. Don't kid yourself, I love GT3's, but GT3 engines are not bullet proof either. That's why Porsche lost a ton of money making GT3's in 2015-2017 because the 991.1 GT3 engines were blowing up like crazy. Porsche ended up replacing so many engines that they lost millions of dollars. Most GT3 engines rarely see high miles either, so there is no real world test of how long they would last in the real world, but GT3 engines get rebuilt all the time too. I have driven over 400,000 miles in Porsche 996/997 engines and have never had any issues. They are great cars with good engines. Don't believe the internet fear mongering. It's not as bad as they make it seem. We are talking 1% failure rate for 997 engine. The 996 engines were between 5-7% and those issues can be addressed with replacing the IMS bearing for $2k, and if done while changing the clutch then it's really only a $700 part.

well i'm talking mezger/ old GT3@@qikqbn77 those had issues as well, but relatively easily fixable due to being built with most things replaceable. unlike later GT3/turbo engines, which were beefed up engines based on the carrera design.

I had a blue 996 C4 aero kit which looked exactly like yours and the engine blew up. I had it repaired and sold it to recoup the costs. I'm really not sure I should have sold it, such a nice vehicle.

I have had a few sports cars since and somehow settled on a MK1 Audi TT Quattro 😅😮 but it's the best sports car I've had bar the 996 and it certainly wasn't the same cost. Surprisingly capable little shit box 😅

Good looking 911. The 9A1 transplant seems like more trouble than it was worth. Cool idea but looked like a ton of work. Enjoyed your video with this car from a few years ago as well. And yes, another video in the future would be appreciated. Enjoy putting more miles on your car!

Congrats! Such a cool project, theres nothing like building a car to suit you. 9A1 are great engines, reliable, characterful, and tunable if you want more power down the road. For folks that dont know, these served track duty in the 981 and first gen 718 GT4 Clubsport race cars and were very reliable and great value / hr compared to a metzger. I would consider adding x51 cams, ltw flywheel, and raise the limiter to 8k rpm. Deman here in the US has been building 4.5L >550 hp 9A1s for years with great success.
