Russell Crowe gets his (dodgy) Italian accent on as he battles demons as the real-life exorcist Father Gabriele Amorth, but Film Brain finds that aside from Crowe this is another case of possession as usual.

Leslie Nielsen actually did a spoof of that in 1990, it was called 'Repossessed' and even had Linda Blair in it. The main joke being the idea that Nielsen previously played the Max Von Sydow role in the original exorcism and had nearly died performing it, so when he gets word that she needs another one, he is reluctant to do so. So we get televangalists trying to do it on live TV, which naturally doesn't work, until finally Nielsen shows up for the rematch. A 'Naked Gun' or 'Airplane', it is not and was only ever given a limited release, but it received some praise at the time and still has some fan base. So there you go, if that's of any interest to you. EDIT: And I watch on and see that Film Brain already mentioned it, ah well.

I think that was a film already, not sure. I know there were several claiming to be real but the line was used more as a gag than anything. "That thing you do" is one of them, i think tropical thunder was another. It was a parody based upon a book from someone that had those experiences, but they added more military tropes to pull out the fiction better.

You know, with you talking about how so many exorcism movies follow similar story beats and almost feel the same, there was a movie that premiered at Overlook Film Festival called Godless: The Eastfield Exorcism that offers a good example for how to differ the genre up. It’s an Australian movie about a woman in a super-religious community whose husband forces her to be “healed” by an exorcist who isn’t sanctioned by the Vatican. It’s a solid, but VERY bleak movie that deals with themes of mass hysteria in religious communities, mental health and illness Vs spirituality, spousal abuse, and whether someone is truly righteous because they allegedly have God on their side. It’s a tough movie to watch some times, but it’s very much worth it if you want to see an exorcism movie try something different.

Sounds like she wasn't possessed so it's really about criticism of faith couched in criticism of fanatical fundamentalism that stems from pride. As if faith invariably amplifies character defects. Great point though. With all of the detailed records of exorcisms that they have, there are literally thousands of them, you'd think they could make a movie that was pretty much a straight up re-enactment. I'll bet they don't want a truthful and realistic portrayal of this. And it would be difficult at best. It's Catholics that do the big theatrical exorcisms that take weeks and involve praying to the Virgin Mary for intercession during particular difficulties. Real casting out of demons is a small, short, untheatrical affair and isn't a solution to anything if the person of interest doesn't reform their life. That wouldn't be exiting to watch. I have several books written by Kurt E Koch. He was a German Deliverance minister with professional credentials in psychology. He worked for decades after the WWII in German, Europe and Africa. The medical people would send him people that they'd determined had problems with supernatural origins. Deliverance means delivering people from bondage to evil spirits. There are attachments that are less serious than full blown possession. He had to keep professional records. The stories that he told were very different than anything I'd ever heard. One was about a woman that believed herself to be a Christian and she went to church regularly but she practiced Taro cards. She'd been warned over and over but always thought she knew more. The day she died, as she was actually approaching the very moment that she died she was saying things like "I can see the light, The Lord is coming for me" or whatever but there was a like a mini earthquake type rumble in the backyard. Like some giant beast was approaching under the earth. The vibration grew louder and the house began to shake and at the last moment before she died she had a look of horror on her face as she realized she'd been deceived and was being collected by her demonic entities and taken to hell. He had several stories like this but this one had the most violent physical phenomena. This story, like so many was second hand and reported to him by people that were present. There was a lot of demonic activity in people that had gone through the war. And Africa had a huge problem of practicing traditional black magic witchcraft. So he saw a lot. But each case was very unique. Robert Breaker on KZread tells a story about when his dad was in hospital in Florida when he was dying. He was sharing a room with a local cop that was known to also be a contract killer. He died first and Roberts dad overheard it over the curtain. It sounds like the guy felt as if he was actually catching fire starting at his feet and rising up his legs and consuming him. They guy was freaking out. Robert said he himself was present later when his own father died. He said there was this super thick presence of calm and peacefulness descend from the ceiling and slowly descend to fill everything in the room. The bible calls it "the peace that transcends all understanding." He said it stayed there for a few minutes as his father died and then slowly rose up again and left. His father was a very righteous Christian. apparently. I've had several loved ones pass and never heard of phenomena like this. I guess it has to do with the degree of your righteousness in God's eyes or of your wickedness. Related to this, I often wonder why movies have to make so many mistakes in logic or plot. Take Alien Prometheus or Covenant for example. I love that franchise and have watched both movies several times. But the amount of things that make no sense are off the scale. There are breakdowns on KZread that go over these movies and show all the things that are ass backwards and it's even worse than I realized. So my point, why can't they make movies that make sense? It wouldn't be hard. You don't need to be a genius to see figure out what is beyond stupid. Before the Devil Knows You're Dead with Philip Seymour Hoffman is one movie I think doesn't have any mistakes. Blue Ruin, Bound, The Last Seduction are others. I guess a thriller has to make sense or it would be idiotic.

Honestly I was astounded when I saw the trailer for this. It looked so mind-numbingly generic that I'd thought it MUST have some extra twist or flair that they've decided to keep under wraps. Because otherwise it just had me questioning the sincerity of the creators behind it wondering if they really thought they were making something brand new in the genre or if this was all just a workman-like rubber-stamp project made out of necessity rather than genuine interest. I guess I'm not surprised to learn it really is just a completely rote & uninteresting exorcism movie. Speaking of Shudder though, I personally did enjoy the movie Metamorphosis, a Korean exorcism movie from 2019 that at least sets itself apart with some pretty dark family tragedy moments. I also re-watched The Wailing which is a supernatural curse/exorcism/thriller blend that was so damn fresh & still entertains me after 3 viewings at this point. Honestly people should give those their watch time I think more than projects like this. And honestly, the fact that you brought up the Vatican's real life scandals in regards to the perception of movies like this reinforces why you're one of my favorite reviewers. For me personally, these films where Catholicism is so distinctly placed as a pure force for good with lame nods to "a dark ancient secret" feel just so distasteful & out of step with reality. The abuses of the Church & clergymen is just tiptoed around so much in broad mainstream projects like this to the point that they barely dodge being considered outright Vatican propaganda. Horror films like this could have a lot to say & actually truly skewer the institution in a way it deserves & actually be interesting & subversive but instead that kind of critique has to come from outright documentaries & biopics like Spotlight etc.

What I think I realize about Russell Crowe as an actor, especially at this stage of his career, is that he knows that he doesn’t need to prove his talent and worth anymore, and his legacy is secure. So in a way, he can do pretty much whatever he wants, and he’ll be fine. He still has a good sense of what a good script is, and how much effort to put into his performance (given his turns in films like The Nice Guys and Boy Erased), but even if he’s in a script that he can sorta sense isn’t that great, he’ll still put the work in to make something out of it.

8:31 Given how home media/streaming has made films easier to access, these copy cats shouldn't still be happening, particularly for a film 50 years old this year. I also agree the Exorcist [like the Shinning or Silence of the Lambs] is a film which has been over parodied which doesn't help. 11:18 I mostly remember him as Chris Finch [Brent's 'friend'] from UK version of The Office.

Honestly still shocks me how many films STILL ape the exorcist, Jaws and Halloween/Friday the 13th each for their respective genres. You watch any thing in those sub-genres and the film makers almost feel obligated to follow at least some of the formula those films created to some degree. I get that film has always been referential to the past. The late 70's and 80's were constantly referencing and homaging films/serials from the 40's and 50's but there was a big difference in that a lot less people had seen those films. The references/homages flew over our heads. Now film makers are referencing and homaging stuff from the 70's and 80's except films from those eras are known by vast swaths of the public and SO MANY films do this. It's not clever or interesting anymore, it just feels lazy.
