Will Smith and Martin Lawrence are back as their Miami buddy cops, but this time they're on the run, and Film Brain finds this to be a surprisingly enjoyable 90s action throwback.

It shows the impact of Covid-19 on cinema in 2020 that part 3 was the highest grossing film that year [with $426 million] as it came out in January.

The highest-grossing movie of 2020 was "Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba - The Movie: Mugen Train". It grossed $507.1 million. "Bad Boys for Life" was actually the *4th* highest-grossing movie of 2020!

What happened to Marcus' sons on the first movie? They were never mentioned on the sequels as if they never existed. And yes, Rhea Seahorn is under-utilized as well as Joe Pantoliano. I wish there are more scenes with him especially at the ending where they just played news clips that Capt Howard was exonerated. The whole story is about clearing his name but they focused more on Marcus' "spiritual awakening" that sometimes it drags the movie too much. Reggie's scene is awesome though. I think that scene really cemented him as a memorable character in the franchise. If ever they will have another sequel, Bad Boys should be captains already and Reggie, Dorn & Armando should do more badass stuff.

2:50 For me, the best legacy of 'Bad Boys 2' was it being parodied in Hot Fuzz, no doubt about that!

The 3rd and 4th Bad Boys movies are better than Michael Bay on his "best" days including The Rock or Pain & Gain both of which I'm in a minority on because I don't like them.

It's becoming more apparent that even at his best, Bay is still an acquired taste. Oh sure, his eye for directing action and practicality are still there, but doesn't mean all that much if you're not interested in the cast or performances, which I find is often my annoyance with him.

Your review is great as always, but you should look into your camera focus. You seemed to be fine and in focus the whole time, but your background was constantly pulsating and it became really distracting after a while. Just watch the Inside Out 2 poster for a while if you don't know what I mean.

  • @FilmBrain

Oh yeah, I was aware of that, can't do much about it after filming, and just hope it wasn't too distracting. (Yes, it annoyed me too.) This was the first review where I've used a teleprompter to have my notes onscreen, but this required me using a different lens which didn't have a retractable element like the kit lens. That lens is an F4, and was probably struggling to get enough light through the prompter. The camera has always had a bit of issue with focus pulsing, even though it is a Sony (albeit without the eye AF, just face detection). The upshot, though, is that this test was a success, so I've ordered a brighter F1.8 prime lens to see if it aids the issue with focus. I hope so.

I agree with you about the Bad Boys franchises, that Bad Boys For Life and Bad Boys: Ride and Die. They have the best aspects of Bay's action style and bombard, but toned down the more troubling comedy.

These films do feel like a throwback, not only as the first one was made in the mid-90's but as a 'buddy cop action film' in the Lethal Weapon mold you don't really see anymore [bar occasional things like 'The nice guys' which was great but sadly flopped]. Interesting this is coming out near 'Beverly Hills Cop 4' finally seeing the light of day [about 15 years after you mentioned it in in your 'cop 3' review] which was going to be helmed by the directors of this film at one stage.

Bad Boys has not, nor ever will be, anything I'm a fan of. Just not my cup of tea with these kinds of stories. Still, many props that it's finding an audience that's supporting it against those allegations of dead theaters and those who seemingly celebrate their loss.

I really dislike it when people 'celebrate' films flopping rather than being positive about films they like. I was pleased to see a film do well at the theatre's given May was quite a negative month for cinemas and I don't want to lose the theatrical experience.
