Wow! Really neat. The bass line for "Rehumanize Yourself" sounds like an 19th century folk song and nothing like the song itself. Same for "One World".

I love the little extras / inconsistencies that sting introduces. A similar approach to Stewart's drumming where he never played it the same way twice. Which is a good thing. They 'Re-humanized' the music!!

Sting is a fantastic bassist. And like those that sing too, doing the two things at once is incredibly difficult, as anyone who has tried will testify.

He's using a layered sound. I never realized that. Sting is an economical player. He wrote the song and has to simultaneously sing it so it's best to balance the energy of the two. He thinks of himself as primarily a bass player above all else and I utterly get this as I also started on stand up bass in orchestras before bass guitar. I was influenced heavily by his economical style and how to use every note to best effect. Make every line count so you don't have to think heavily about it later.

As mentioned in a previous post, u can hear how 'also particularly in the more complex bass parts' his playing is never statically duplicated from one section to the next, the parts are always idosyncratic and varied with notes added and subtracted from the main theme of the parts, from verse to chorus and back, basically andy and stewart also did this considerably, which gives the music the freedom of expression it has. I always thought about transcribing the bass for every little thing she does is magic note for note, but to fully transcribe and then perform/play all the idiosynchronsies identically, would then defeat the goal of how the composer originally wrote and envisaged it themselves. as rick beato said :- sting is uncopyable

the sonic integration of the drums and bass in Spirits makes it challenging to figure out what the bassline there is, which is not a bad thing, together they are greater than the sum of their parts, but it's certainly interesting to finally hear exactly wtf he's doing! I always play more than that.

When Sting goes to the chorus on the first cut, (Spirits in the Material World), does the bass sound slightly flat? I don't think he's playing a fretless on that tune. Is he? The bass also sounds just a tad distorted. Or is that the recording?

I've never had him down as a flats player but some of these tracks do sound like flat wounds.Could just be the balance on the recordings.

Sting is considered one of the best bass players

Not at this time in his career. Sting actually used fretless basses or his upright bass. Pretty impressive for a guy that has to sing and play at the same time.
