The Pokemon Movie That Was Abandoned...
Фильм және анимация
Look, I adore the Detective Pikachu Movie, but as of today this movie is 5 years old. It was one of the earliest signs of the great era of video game adaptions. And after years and years of inspirations and successes, Pokeon has followed up with... nothing. Not an announcement, not a rumour. Not even a contact with past protagonist Justice Smith. You would have thought from the most profitable video game company of all time would now how to captialise on maximum profits in theatrical scene. But no. And that's a real shame. Cause I really like this movie, and to not see a sequel from something that worked so well, and instead getting a TERRIBLE video game sequel of no substance is something. A dssappointing note for this 5 year retrospective...

Nah the designs were still very ugly. They could have made the pokemon cuter and more stylized, but hollywood is currently in the trend of being as 'realistic' as possible, even if what's on screen is unpleasant or uncanny to look at

@@Brindlebrother Thats weird cause thats kinda the exact opposite of how I feel, there was a period in the early-mid 2010s where that was the style, but more recently movies have been less afraid to be cartoonish and stylised. I think detective pikachu is one of the prime examples of this, it didnt make any of the pokemon look like realistic animals like all the fan art thats been all over the place for 10 years, it essentially just took their designs and applied texture to them. Whether or not that works is subjective but its certainly not making them "as realistic as possible" Thats a trend thats been less and less prevalant in recent years.

I love "Detective Pikachu!" Although I'll be honest, The first time I ever heard about Detective Pikachu, My first thought was that I always wondered if they would ever make a live action Pokemon film, But I didn't think that this is what they had in mind but luckily the film turned out to be more interesting than I thought. Anyway I agree, It's a real shame that unlike the video the movie never got a sequel or prequel.

I don't think a sequel is necessary due to how the movie ended. Because the movie literally ends with Tim and his father reunited and therefore happy ending. So I wouldn't see the point in giving a follow up to a movie that has a perfect ending.

Agreed. They can basically dive in every story archetype they'd want.
i ironically re-watched this a few weeks ago for nostalgia reasons, but hell man this movie needs a sequel!
Crazy how one of the most influential Video Game Movies, that arguably redefined the genre along with the and changed ppl's opinion on VG movies alongside the Sonic movie, never got some sort of sequel. It's a shame, woulda been great to explore the world and it's possible cinematic universe. SO much potential.
an anthology series based off of this film would be neat just a collection of stories based in this wold they have set up
The crazy thing is that my cousin worked on the movie and was unfortunately uncredited, despite this I find it really amazing that she worked on a movie based on a video game she used to love playing.

Real hot take, I take Detective Pikachu over the Mario movie. While the script is a little too similar to Roger rabbit, it at least had an engaging execution and an incredible 3rd act!!!
Detective Pikachu walked so Sonic could run and Mario could jump.
I have a few things to say about this movie. For one, I really enjoyed it. The pokemon were translated into 3D to such a high degree that makes them look at least more real than the models we get in the games. Also, I think Reynolds should have stayed as Pikachu. Sure it's a much more heartwarming moment that he could see his dad once again but I think it could have worked as a sequel with Reynolds and Justice still being father in a pokemon body and son duo. Justice trying to get everything in his dad's life back in order and explain everything to the police chief from the start and his dad helping his son grow up in the world. The dynamic could have been better like that rather than two humans and the one pokemon. If they do a sequel I'm not sure how they can pick it up. Reynolds supporting Justice to be his own detective and his pikachu being entrusted to help him out in the field while his dad does more paperwork based sleuthing? If they wanted to make this a duology or trilogy, Reynolds should have stayed a Pikachu. Though I hope we get more movies with this level of modelling quality in the Pokemon universe. It'd be a shame to waste all the time and effort the team went through to make these pokemon look like real beings.
They removed the ability to make a sequel easily by making Pikachu just a Pikachu at the end of the movie. Even the first game did not make that mistake, leaving the mystery of Harry Goodman somewhat up in the air, but heavily hinted at. Also it took forever for the sequel to DP to come out in game form. So they might toss a sequel movie out at us at some point randomly.
Pretty sure it's believed to be worked on or at least stuff from that universe but must be on pause due to Ryan Reynolds schedule and the other actors schedules
I am shocked how fast i forgot that this movie existed.
They already spoiled the plot for us with the movie, which could have been the 'sequel' to the game in itself. The FNAF movie decides to take the same route, unfortunately.
Legends Arceus was kind of an experiment for Game Freak. And in my opinion is one of the best Pokemon games period. Since it wasn't a mainline game it didn't get the budget it deserved, so let's hope that Legends Z-A can meaningfully build on the framework Legends Arceus laid out.
5 years?! yeesh where is time going
i really loved this movie when it came out, but honestly i kinda am glad they haven’t made a second one. with how bloated the movies coming out are tied to games, it would of probably just gotten caught up in the mix of those bad movies. idk maybe it would stand out compared to them, but it would be easier for it to just be slapped together with things like the mario movie or sonic.
2:45 Honestly that’s why I quit buying the games and just look at all the new pokemon and try to appreciate the new story and lore. I myself get the same if not more out of doing that despite how drastic that sounds

It's very funny you'd say that, given I'm seeing adds for his Garfield movie where Pratt reuses the "getting too much into the animal character" bit that Reynolds did for Detective Pikachu. Just, y'know. Worse, because Ryan actually was funny doing it.

Young pokémon researcher gets mind swapped with a pokémon and in the maelstrom of abilities ends up in an unknown forest and has to make their way back to the their lab to fix this, all the while the pokémon now in his body navigates the challenges of human life, under a ticking clock of the pokémon instincts fighting back due to a faulty swap and running from legendaries who would brainwash him if they found out, maybe on the human side add a threat of the university pulling funds and leaving them both stuck?. Allows us to explore pokémon-human relationships again, but this time we get to see it from their turf as our protag gets a glimpse behind the curtain in rituals or events never before seen by humans, lets the pokémon gain an appreciation for human struggles and experiences.

Sequel to a movie where the Pikachu stopped being a talking Pikachu?

Damn. You only posted 40-seconds ago; and I’m here? I’m watching u on my tv, I literally only came to say hi and i actually rlly like ur content:3
I mean its kinda hard to do a sequal when they essentially adapted the plots of both Detective Pikachu games in the first film, and "unDetectived" Pikachu at the end. They would gave to make an entirely new plot to justify why Pikachu is talking again in a sequel. Even then it would be kinda forced. Also Game Freak eho make the mainline Pokemon games did not make the Detective Pikachu games, but actually Creatures Inc. instead. Who are tued to Gane Freak but are their own sub company.
A real life Pokémon movie was like a child dream coming to reality ( I'm 32) And then they make it a Ryan Reynolds comedy movie... I like Ryan Reynolds, but not as a Pokémon, he has his Deadpool movies for his humour... I wasn't impressed, it's not a movie I will ever watch again, but it's watchable.. let's put it like that
If they don’t do a direct follow-up but do still make more Pokemon movies like this, I think there’s a good opportunity for a longitudinal/coming-of-age movie centered around Misty. Basically, a John Hughes movie but with higher stakes and more action. Thoughts?
Detective pikachu is by far one of my favorite video game live action movie cause I always wonder how Pokemons look like in real life
They made a second video game. Also, movies can be standalone.
Let me put it this way. I hated the ending of Detective Pikachu (the game). It had clearly been changed at the last minute in order to bait out a sequel. (A sequel fans hated) The movie on the other hand, had what I feel is the original ending we should’ve had in the game. We’re actually shown what happened to Tim’s father, everything is resolved, and most importantly, no sequel bait. This film doesn’t have a sequel because it doesn’t need one.

I was told the game's Switch sequel literally followed the same plot beats as the film adaptation of this game that released prior. And that game even has a divorce between two characters that happen for no reason.
Me: I'm also dressing up as shadow for this Halloween at that believe or not
I remember when this movie was coming out, and when the trailer was new I was like “Aww, look at Pikachu he looks so cute” and my friends at the time where like “You think That’s Cute!?” Basically, they thought the Pokemon in this movie looked creepy, I on the other hand…thought they looked cool. But maybe I’m just used to live action Cartoony CGI hybrids.
This movie defintely deserves more attention its better than both the mario movie and the sonic movies
I thought how could a sequel even work.... but the answer is soooo simple: Have the dad becoming a Pikachu on Purpose, because they have to interview Pokemon😅
I will agree that another Detective Pikachu is not needed, but I am sure other stories could be made with the world done this way. It always bugs me when an amazingly done world gets bogged down by having to stick to the same leads.

I want a movie on the same universe just called Rocket. It could be a movie about the teams first mission, the obvious fighting between them, and then coming together for a common enemy: Beef with a rat and a twelve year old
Making nature like documentary’s on Pokémon with great slow music would be 🔥
This was one of the first genuinely great videogame movie adaptations, and it really did influence movies to follow! 😁
I remember in the mid-2000s, being dismissed for suggesting a live action Pokémon movie
>>"...Never Got A Follow-Up" I think you missed out on the numerous news reports from February 2023 that the sequel to this shockingly great film is still in active development at Legendary Pictures.
Genuinely, this was one of my favorite films of all time, and as a kid I was praying SO HARD that they'd adapt another pokemon game or story like Mystery Dungeon or even one of the Pokemon Adventures mangas- euueahgebhegr
Me: I'm sure you'll be a better fan of Pokémon soon. As if you give stuff like Pokémon, Illumination, Dreamworks and also other things Nintendo a chance im sure they'll something you might like about them too... by the way how do you think Sonic The Movie 3 will be for you because I'm just as excited for this as much as other things Pokémon and things Nintendo in general as well
I like to think theis movie paved the way for movies like the dungeons and dragons movie to exist. That movie is stellar if you haven’t seen it, then go watch it. The actor from detective pikachu is actually there too and does an excellent job!
Pokemon has me at the point where I’m not going to buy their games unless I see that they’re trying to even catch up to every other Nintendo franchise
I love _Detective Pikachu._ I personally would had preffered that Ryan Reynolds stayed fused to his pikachu at the end, but if they really don't plan to make any more movies, I suppose is for the best to give the story a deffinitive ending
the Detective Pikachu movie is still getting that sequle hopefully we might hear more news about later this year but i think justice smith is most likely not gonna come back and Tim will get recast because of the things smith said and that recent movie he was in this year that everyone knew was well....... pure bad
Man 5 years I remember seeing the first trailer
It is shocking how well it actually came out, and no sequel has been made yet. It’s not underrated but it’s kind of forgotten as well? I remember when I watched it with my family. I can’t believe it’s been 5 years! I rewatched it 3 months ago with my mom and it still is a pretty good movie.
I saw an article tht said the movie found a director and tht a sequel is in the works
@3:28 good news with the next pokemon game there taking there time and pokemon legends za is coming out in 2025
Nice Pokémon Coliseum music in the background
Let it end as it did for the love of all that is holy we don't need unnecessary sequels
Holy- FIVE YEARS OLD?!
But Pikachu was a detective because he wanted his body back, so once Reynolds gets his body back why do we need a sequel? That Pikachu is just a normal pokemon. Don't see a reason for it.
I think there is a live action pokemon series in works at netflix
I really need a PMD move really badly and the fact that the Pokémon franchise hasn't done one yet I believe is a big missed opportunity.
I'd love to see more Pokemon movies in this live action / animation style, but I'm not sure where they coudl go with a sequel. There's no reason to have another "talking" Pokemon, for example. Even if we followed Tim in like, his new job as a detective, the whole show would feel too human focused as the Pokemon don't speak English normally. And hey, even in movies where the animated stars DO speak English, the humans can still take up too much space (Sonic, for example). Some movies just don't need sequels. And I don't think we need a sequel with some lame excuse as to why someone has to possess a Pokemon body to solve a crime. It worked in the original because of it had real reasons to. But if they did that again, it'd just feel lazy. So yeah, more of these types of Pokemon movie for sure! But we don't need a Detective Pikachu sequel, unless they can really put something great together.
I fucking love this movie
I really like this movie but my god does it show how some pokemon would be super scary in real life like what the fuck is that jigglypuff
I would love to them to expand the world like idk meeting new legendary kinda like in the old animation movies of pokemon
Is it just ne or is there no sound in this video
I do love detective Pikachu I think it was a good movie also with the recent games yes they haven't been the best they can but I do feel that people touch on the fact that it performs horribly and looks ugly a bit to much and don't even talk about the good aspects like the story and that which is why so many people preferred sword and shield over scarlet and Violet which is weird cause scarlet and violet are better than sword and shield in every way (other than graphics). Also I think detective Pikachu could do with a sequel or maybe something along those lines my biggest problem with detective Pikachu was the fact that they force Kanto down are thoughts seriously!? there is 8 other generations! and kanto is the worst one!

I don't want to see a Detective Pikachu sequel as much as I want to see a big-budget animated Pokemon film. Ideally it would be either 2D or continue the trend of more stylized 3D animation. It's probably a pipe dream but having a theatrically released film that has nothing to do with the anime would be an absolute dream come true for me

I liked this movie but I don't think it needs a sequel. I'm a big fan of stories being concise and contained to whatever story they set out to be - sort of like how Gravity Falls didn't continue past its conclusion. The fact that it ended where it did is why I look back on the whole series with a smile, rather than viewing the end parts as a blur. I'm all for another live action pokemon movie, but not detective pikachu necessarily. There's lots of other cool pokemon stories to focus on that could be adapted to live action nicely.
